Lets try and keep this civil people. The meat eaters versus vegans thing has been done to death. Most of the board have nothing new to add. If you feel compelled to reply telling us how you're knee deep in chicken wings that is entirely your choice.

Anyone doing it? Just tried the new Costa vegan 'cheese' and 'ham' toastie. I hope they keep it. It's good enough to for me to choose regularly.

Any decent product suggestions? Recipe ideas? etc

My sister can't have gluten.

As a confirmed lover of all bread I do feel sorry for her there.

Mind you, I cut back on bread dramatically for a few months last year and lost sooo much weight that I actually looked good for a while.

That and alcohol.

I've put the weight on again since I started eating bread again. And rediscovered beer.

There's loads of gluten free specialist bread available, incl online, some large supermarkets, and specialist local shops incl some farmshops. Usually consist of a mixture of things like corn, rice etc.

And they are usually all absolutely terrible.

Gluten free bread just doesn't work properly. You can do types of bread that are naturally quite dense (like pizza bases) but something like a bloomer is just impossible without adding a load of chemicals.

The pasta is alright though.

You weren't being "controversial". I was simply pointing out for those who aren't aware, that getting rid of all farm animals isn't actually 100% a great idea when the whole picture is looked at.

I think about 90% of people who've contributed to this thread (including myself) have said that they've cut down on the amount of meat they eat.

Imagine what would happen to all the other plant eating animals if we as a nation went vegan like less than 1% of the country are. They wouldn't be food anymore; they'd be competition. All those cows chickens rabbits sheep and pigs would be shot on sight by the Soy Farmers and extinct within a generation. All the horses apart from a few working ones would be left to slowly die out, no more horse racing in our vegan utopia.
Considering the damage many of them do to the environment it may not be a bad thing though, sheep in particular.
Perhaps we may see extreme re-wilding and the reintroduction of wolves & bears to England for pest control purposes? Of course that would *also* mean it wouldnt be safe for you and I to go out walking in the countryside anymore without taking a shotgun with us.

Yes, we know. She's 58.

Thing is, they're mostly awful.

She makes her own now but has mostly got used to going without.

I think there is one she says isn't too bad - might be an M&S one, but that might not be true.

If it's M&S, they do like half a loaf of brown bloomer that is quite expensive but is about as close as I've seen any supermarket get.

Sometimes my partner gets it as a treat.

“Extinction within a generation”

Very Funny.

Oh crikey, wait.

Are you trying to make some form of valid point here?

I am not entirely sure that you have read the report that I mentioned to which your response was “Wrong”

I don’t mind answering real questions on this topic. You are going to have to try a little bit harder.

"Episode 1
Veganville Series 1 Episode 1 of 3

Veganville sees a group of vegans head to the heart of south Wales to try to convert local meat eaters to a plant-based lifestyle, challenging views on both sides of the debate in the process.

Meat and dairy consumption is ingrained in local culture across the UK, and Merthyr Tydfil, a town surrounded by hills and farmland, is home to many who depend on animal agriculture for employment and nutrition.
But with veganism making its way into the mainstream, the series explores what motivates those who choose a plant-based lifestyle, and those who don’t, as a group of vegans tries to convince the tight-knit community of Merthyr to go meatless.

The vegans include full-time animal rights activist Joey, Miami bodybuilder Korin, single mum Jodi, foodie Rikki and truck driver Dan. Each has a different attitude towards giving up animal products, leading to tensions when it comes to the methods used for spreading the word about veganism.

The first four vegans arrive at their new home in Merthyr Tydfil and waste no time setting up a welcome event in the town centre. Tensions among the group soon rise as it becomes clear that, although they share the same goal, their attitudes to spreading the plant-based message are very different. Meanwhile, Merthyr residents have mixed feelings when it comes to veganism. Some are open to the idea, but others believe that animal products are part of balanced diet and many simply enjoy the taste of meat. With Jodi and Rikki keen to win the community over with kindness and cake, and Joey adopting the hard-hitting approach of playing abattoir footage in the town square, will the local community and the vegans be able to accept each other’s point of view?"

Thanks for that, I will watch.

I often think vegans (and most groups with strong views) go about it the wrong way. The abattoir footage is fair enough but it will likely provoke a hostile reaction. Why not set up a stall outside a supermarket and give out samples and information? I'm convinced if people knew figures about how much water it took to produce a pint of milk compared to oat milk and got to try it and see that it's actually really nice it would do much more for the cause than the aggressive all or nothing approach. People are naturally curious and most would try a few samples much more willingly than watch abattoir footage.

Imagine:

Milk alternative
Meat alternative
Cheese alternative

It's not all or nothing but in one day they could make a massive difference. Going up to people and demanding they give up all animal products will likely have a much lesser impact.

Also if a few were willing to take the easy ground rather they could tell people about products like Clarence Court eggs - truly free range, no routine beak clipping, less eggs laid per bird etc etc.

Truly impaired.

I would have to agree.

Sometimes it is worth taking a step back and remembering why a person may have personally made a change to go vegan. Then thinking about if it really was someone shoving some pictures in their face in the street.

The mechanics of going vegan now are much easier, but the decision to do so and stick with it is still quite difficult. You need more than a sense of revulsion at some pictures.

Breadmaker sounds interesting.

I have one* but I've been disappointed with the results if I'm honest.

I like granary but the loaves it turns out, whilst lovely whilst still hot, become almost potential weapon-like solid lumps in no time once cooled.

I've tried half and half mixes but even so.

I can vouch for its ability to make some jams and apple sauce; that kind of thing.

It's also handy for mixing chapati dough, ready to be rolled into balls, floured, and shoved in the freezer for another day.

But actual fresh loaves - not so good, plus you have to delve into the dough to pull out the paddles before the baking stage so's not to have holes through your bread.

Hand-made seems to have far superior results, and there's a Tesco and a local baker that does it better and more efficient than I.

I hate that it hasn't worked out for me and the bread-maker. I really liked the idea.

*Edit: not that model. Wasn't clear there. I'm sure that's better than mine.

Totally agree. Getting people onside is essential, & persuasion is usually a much better way of doing that. Aggression & shock tactics are more likely to just alienate them.

I didn't like him. I hate the attitude that they are the enlightened and people just need to be educated. It seemed most people were willing to cut down on meat and animal products. I understand having strong beliefs but take the easy gains. Much easier to get that snowball rolling and encourage people to take it further once they see how easy it is, and to be honest, unless you have health issues/family issues it is easy 90% of the time if people WANT to do it. I've noticed the absolute explosion of vegan options in the last year or so. To someone like Callis the change over the last five years or so must be insane. It does make me wonder where we will be in 5-10 years and how much more of the chilled aisle the plant based options will take up.

Eating is now a moral minefield, as almost everything we put in our mouths — from beef to avocados, cheese to chocolate, almonds to tortilla chips, salmon to peanut butter — has an insupportable environmental cost.

Every hectare of land used by farming is a hectare not used for wildlife and complex living systems.

When it comes to the vegan lifestyle I could do the food.

What do you do when at a hotel with feather/down bedding?

Isn’t that against vegan ethics?

I’m genuinely interested. Are there vegan hotels?

I see car manufacturers are now advertising vegan leather coming into their vehicles.

It’s all very interesting, I just spent 10 minutes reading about vegan cars.

My understanding from a few people at work is that you avoid as much as you can. If you stay at a hotel and they happen to have leather then there's not much you can do.

Obviously then there are people like that guy who won the case recently for "ethical veganism" who wouldn't even take the bus because it damages wildlife, so he walked everywhere. I don't personally know anyone who is that extreme.
