No British referees at the World Cup 15:30 - Mar 29 with 2495 views | Radlett_blue | 99 referees & assistants named; none of them from Britain. And this has been done by FIFA so no obvious Russian skulduggery.

No British referees at the World Cup on 15:33 - Mar 29 with 2472 views | FinidiCentenary | That is an absolute farce on the highest scale. When you have the biggest league, some of the best referees, those use to handling world class players, huge matches and occasions like Champions League finals, how can there be no Premier League officials there, when they will no doubt have officials from the likes of the Swiss, Hungarian or Slovakian leagues. Can't wait for the FA's comments.

First time since 1938, but the English FA was out of FIFA between 1928 & 1946. I haven't seen the full list but I hope most of those are refs with experience of controlling top games e.g. Champions' League, rather than the old FIFA way of trying to represent every country.

So really only saying that there wasn't a home nation ref in the top 10 for Europe. Which is probably fair enough.

...but there will be referees from Turkey, French Polynesia, 2 from the USA, New Zealand, Iran, Uzbekistan, Gambia, Ethiopia. That's incredible. I mean I am all for giving other nations a chance, but you have to have referees that have taken charge of big games when it's the biggest stage of all!

Exactly. Most of the CL refs I have seen have been very good. But in a WC, you want the best refs, which means refs with experience of refereeing top class football.

No British referees at the World Cup on 16:20 - Mar 29 with 2288 views | longtimefan | The only English refs who were UEFA Elite level and anywhere near World Cup levels of experience were Martin Atkinson and Mark Clattenburg. Martin is now too old under FIFA regulations and Mark decided to retire and take the role as Saudi Arabian Head of Refereeing. The only English ref now at Elite level are Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor who were both only promoted to that level in December last year.

So how does a ref from Uzbekistan get to Elite level? Surely refereeing two teams of players worth an average of £50m each, dealing with egos like Mourinho, being watched live by 80,000 fans and millions on TV is a little but more qualified than refereeing players paid £30 per week in front of a crowd of 600?

An referee from Uzbekistan holds the record for the most World Cup games, and he refereed in the London Olympics! . Not sure if it's the same guy that's going to be there this year, but suspect it is - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravshan_Irmatov#Matches But yeah, it does seem a bit of a jump from the Uzbekistan national league.

"So how does a ref from Uzbekistan get to Elite level? " The same way an English ref would - work your way up from 3rd Category, through 2nd and 1st to Elite level. Starts with being nominated by your refereeing association, start reffing Youth age European league matches, get promoted to doing Youth Internationals and Europa League matches and then Champions League and Internationals. You don't make it to Elite level without a vast amount of big European match experience or dedication.
