Who would you appoint? I wouldn’t have Southgate at club level but I don’t think there’s anyone available with a better skillset suited to international management who would take the job.

Because we were winning everything until Southgate came along. I don't know what people see sometimes. Under him we've got to a quarter final, a semi-final and a final.

So what top side have we actually beat in a world cup under Southgate I would say we beat who we are expecting to. I fo not believe he has the ability to make major game changing decisions. Ie Croatia 2018 Italy 2020 And a weakened France side 2022 Games his grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. Not about previous managers I'm far from convinced.

Can’t disagree with that.
Gareth Southgate staying on 22:34 - Dec 17 with 2375 views | Chrisd | Feel it’s the right decision. Give Southgate Euro 2024 and then review. We’ve had top managers before in Eriksson and Capello and neither of them got us remotely close to winning a major competition. Top club managers don’t guarantee international success, but we do seem on the right track under Southgate and importantly the players trust him.

I think Italy in Euros at Wembley were there for the taking. I don't think we'll ever get a better chance. Other than that it's been pretty standard stuff. We had an all day breakfast of a draw in the Russia world cup and didn't ever look like likely imo. This year was a missed opportunity but we lose to France, Argentina and Brazil 6 days out of 7. Problem people accept mediocrity Whether England or Ipswich Personally I don't understand it. Show me acceptance I will show you a loser
Gareth Southgate staying on 23:23 - Dec 17 with 2264 views | GlasgowBlue | I’d say that Southgate has more positives than negatives but his one big negative is a lack of plan B. He’ll shuffle the players around but never makes a tactical masterstroke. Which was needed against Croatia in 2018, Italy lat year and France last week. I have no issue with him staying on. He has a great relationship with the players and handles the off field stuff really well. But there is an issue of familiarity and I dint think we will get any further under Southgate. Graham Potter would be my choice.

Gareth Southgate staying on 23:47 - Dec 17 with 2235 views | LankHenners | If the FA want an English manager to take over then they'll be hoping this gives 18 months for Howe to take Newcastle as far as he can or Potter to get fed up with Chelsea.

Gareth Southgate staying on 09:22 - Dec 18 with 2006 views | ElephantintheRoom | IF the object is to win either the Euros or the World Cup I’d dispense with the idea of an ‘England Manager’. In a merry go round going back 60 years the results have invariably been the same, with exit at the first competitive game no matter who’s manager - so clearly somethings is wrong - assuming an England team can win a couple of demanding games and take penalties when the pressure is on. Ramsey was continually criticised and contrived to get knocked out by West Germany in 1970 with a team that had been at least as good as Brazil’s ‘best team ever’. Results have been the same ever since - 52 years and counting. Time to try a part-time manager with coaches adept at offense, defence and special teams for set pieces and penalties- with a brief to win a tournament.

Agree. We should have beaten Italy. There was a good window in that game where he could have made positive changes and taken the handbrake off. I don't think he will win us anything but his pragmatic approach and the talent at his disposal will continue to get us to the latter stages. As posted previously, I support him staying as there's no one else and he's earnt the right to decide for himself but I can't see us winning the Euros. We will cruise along until we play France or Spain. The FA need to begin working on their succession plan for the next world cup. Reading this post back, it's perhaps more critical than intended. On balance, he's done a decent job. There is a nagging feeling though that his style is not suited to the latter stages.

The in-game tactics point is the strongest of the anti-Southgate arguments, particularly in regards to the Italy game. And as you say, there’s very little correlation between being a top club manager and a top international one because you need a completely different set of skills to succeed. Capello and Eriksson had great club records and they both underachieved with England - even at this World Cup Germany and Spain both had treble-winning managers and failed.

Surely whether we can beat France or Spain in four years time depends a lot upon how existing players maintain their skillsets, how relevant those skillsets are to the game as it evolves and what new talent emerges in each nation ?

Precisely, the object is to win either the World Cup or Euros and every manager since Ramsey has been a failure. However personally I think Southgate has done well certainly better than any other England manager since Ramsey and I would stick with him until after the Euros.
