We're in a great position - 8 points clear of third currently - way above where we ever imagined we'd be.

But realistically, what did we all hope for this season? Top half? Part of me always believed 6th was always achievable, but realistically I'd probably have said about 8th.

Well... hear me out! To finish 8th last season was 68 points...

That's an average of 1.48 points per game.

So what if we were now just to average 1.48 points per game from our remaining 35 games? That would mean 52 more points.

Add that to the 28 we currently have and you'd be looking at a final total of: 80 points.

Last season, that would have been enough to finish third, and at no point in the last decade would that have seen us fail to make the play-offs.

But who is the most likely to catch us? Leeds? Sunderland? Southampton?

Assuming we made it to 80 points, to catch us, they'd have to average the following points:

Leeds - 1.74
Sunderland - 1.74
Southampton - 1.80

All in all, not only do we need to have a huge drop off to finish outside the top two, but those teams need to seriously up their game.

Will both those variables happen? Who knows?

I really fancy us for top two.

I predicted us 4th, given how we dismantled every "good" team towards the end of last season and played well against Rotherham and Burnley with the reserves, the foundations were there for us to continue that.

Although like you say, not sure anyone would have predicted us to have only dropped 5 points at this stage!

Just enjoying every game at the moment.

Our biggest issue we'll possibly encounter will be 'managing expectations' ...

A lead of nine points on Leeds and 11 on Saints with 35 games to go is only between 0.2 and 0.3 ppg for them to catch us. So for every 10 games played they need to gain 2 or 3 more points than us.

Leicester, Southampton and Leeds have squads capable of getting more than 90 points this season.

Lots to be positive about but too many folk are getting ahead of themselves imv.

One game at a time and all that.

Me too. In my mind though, it was more like we would be around 6-8 by January and then strengthen areas where players didn't make the step up.

Instead we are 2nd, having won 9 from 11. So to predict lower than 2nd at this point seems to go against my logic of thinking we can identify areas to improve in the winter window.

That being said, we only need to look at how we chased down a 8 point gap to a Sheff Wed side that got 96 points to understand that things aren't that simple. There are plenty of points to play for and nothing stopping another side from putting together an extraordinary run.

What is the average position predicted for us in the prediction competition? And the lowest too (I know some predicted us top, didn't they?)?

Right everyone I know we may have a few new players coming in and going out but realistically where abouts do you think we will finish in the league come the end of the season I would say between 8th and 10th

The miserable git in me is expecting a collapse. I’d be trawling through tables looking for examples of when teams have imploded from our position, if I could be bothered. That’s what following Towen through the Marcus Evans years has done to me.

I’m only just starting to believe we can actually compete. But it’s not fully sunk in yet. That’s daft really, as if I was looking in from outside as a neutral I’d say we’re were very well equipped to go up automatically.

Would have been happy with top half before the season, but think top 6 is very much a possibility now. To be honest, the start has already made my season, so everything else is just going to be a bonus.

I thought 5th based on the fact we don't lose many games and our form at the end of last season was not just that of a top L1 team but a team much higher playing in the League.

So when it came to looking at the season ahead my thoughts to what dictates our season is (and still does) how many games we draw. My original thoughts concluded we'd win 20 odd games, draw 15 and lose 11 give or take a game or two.

I think that kind of form may play out for the rest of the season so 16 W, 11D and 8L giving 59pts, resulting a final tally of 87 points so for me now my revision would be 2nd/3rd.

After 11 games of a season it’s easy to be in a false position but we are not a case of that. Even the most pessimistic fan can see our football and all the stats are a true reflection of where we sit in the table.

The only concern I see is injuries to key players. However that is only a slight concern for 2 reasons. You only have to look at the subs we always make and the squad cohesion to see any changes would be a seemless process with not much difference in play. Also we are now a very attractive proposition so the best players moving to championship level teams in January would probably favour us over any rivals.

The odds are now suggesting we have more chance of promotion than not and although scumbags the bookies will more likely get this right.

Furthermore after games this season you only have to look at honest fan reactions of opponents and it’s noticeably frequent how we are seen as the best team they have played.
