Greg Leigh on the move? 20:33 - Aug 20 with 11663 viewsLukePenningVGP

Seems a lot of interest and speculation from the Oxford United fan community on (X)

He’s also just a year to go on his contract, if he can get the security of a longer deal that will come into his thinking.

This is a key point, if only a year left then we risk a free transfer. Do we have an option for an extra year, maybe it hasn't been activated?

Leigh is probably one of our strongest backups (along with Donacien, Taylor, Ball maybe), so I'd be looking to upgrade in other places first, and very much sticking to the 'not too many at a time' principle fo continuity.

Agreed, he's very solid and robust

I appreciate Davis is very important to the way we play and a backup who plays in a similar style, may cover us better if he is injured, who knows?

It would have to be an up and coming understudy like Mings was with Cresswell?

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

Replacement would have to be even better than Leigh, and would still be playing 2nd fiddle to Davis.

Unless we are getting a replacement for Davis and he’s going to be back up for the new player.

I can’t see it, unless we are getting a left sided CB who can play LB as a secondary position.

Given there seems consensus that we’re looking for a left sided centre back…I think it’s pretty feasible that left sided centre back might be versatile enough to play left back (eg Davies from Rangers or Panzo).

That might be the way they do it, not that Burgess looks like he will be easily displaced currently

I have literally no ITK knowledge but building quality can still mean improving those currently considered back up where those types of players are available. Leigh might not want to do 3 years back up but another might be willing to build up profile over next year or two knowing we are likely to be looking to sell Davis in next year or two.

How about Cresswell back to compete with Davis?

At some point he will have to downgrade, not sure with the money West Ham have he will get much 1st team football now. Probably a big stretch, just putting a name out there.

Should be announced today or tomorrow.

That suggests someone incoming but not heard anything on that.

Odd decision by us. Great back up in an important position

Editing just to add it’s a loan, not permanent, from what I’ve been told

It would be disappointing to lose him if true, but from a player’s point of view they want to be playing not sitting on the bench. If Davis is out, I always feel Leigh confident will come in and do a good job. He offers something different with his style of play.

I don’t see the sense in this. We’re unlikely to get better I’d have thought (better basically means Davis becomes number 2). Unless he really wants to go for 1st team footie. If so, fair enough.

A player I like a lot who deserves more involvement so best of luck if a move comes along for him. Clarke also plays in that position. So maybe a left footed centreback as a replacement. Hopefully a loan and the chance for improvement.

Why would we want him too?

This is one where one letter completely changes the meaning.

Why would we want him to?

or

Why would we want him too?

In this context they mean the exact opposite of each other.

He did excellently for us when he played last season, really solid back up and deserves to start somewhere for me.

Issue we have is that we have 2 brilliant all round full backs who get us playing in different ways Leif Davis and Harry Clarke, but their back ups are super solid dependable players but they just totally stop us playing out and playing forwards like we want to do so and limit our play in Janoi Donacien and Greg Leigh.

But then how do you replace them? Presume it would be a loan signing from a PL club to do so as can't see we could sign players permanently of the right skill set to be back ups

Trouble is, a Prem youngster would still count towards the squad limit … although I have to say I’ve no idea where we stand with that at the minute.

We’ve got 25 but I think you can pretty much guarantee Hayes and Edwards won’t be registered so I’d say 2 spaces. 3 if Leigh goes.

Humphreys could play that role on the left - he has the skillset.

I can't see us going out and signing another full back when Clarke and Davis are so nailed on and quality. Maybe someone that predominantly plays elsewhere and can cover at full back if needed?

Would be disappointed to see Greg leave - has never let the side down when he has played, is a brilliant understudy to Davis and is a footballer you never hear negativity about because they aren't in the side week in week out - a really good professional and any successful team needs these type of players.

Of course I would understand if he wants to go and play regular football - similarly to Kyle Edwards.

Really would wish him the very best - what a really good cheap pick up on a free from Morecambe he turned out to be.

Aside from being great back up, he’s also handy for a tactical postponement!

Don't think that matters, as we effectively have 2 spaces currently so would just be one in-one out and still leave room for any signings we want to make

Can't see that we'd go without at least one specialist backup. It'd be absolutely crackers to have 6 midfielders for 2 positions, 7 attacking midfielders for 3 positions (almost certainly 8 by the end of the window), but only 1 left back!

I think the lack of left sided CB also doesn't help - effectively leaves us one short there too.

If we could get someone that covers both as a good signing it might free us up to do that.

But, Baggott was due to go out on loan, and eithout him it is currently 7 covering 4 positions which is much shorter than anywhere else on the pithc

Hard sell though isn't it - even to get a Premier League loan of a youngster. Davis is going to play every week. You are going to do well to find a player that can play that role as Davis does who is willing to be a backup, which is why I wonder if you go with Donacien, Humphreys or even Clarke as your LB backup options if needed.

Agreed. I'm surprised a Championship club hasn't come in for him. He is good enough. It makes no sense to let him go to me. But if he wants regular first team football then we cant stand in his way l guess.
