European weekender..... 14:23 - Feb 7 with 3715 viewsitfcjoe

....trying to book something for a weekend in late June to go away with Mrs itfcjoe and seeing if any recommendations here as proving to be a bit awkward

Want somewhere with a nice view, preferably of some water like a nice lake or a coast line, that is easy to get to (i.e. ~2 hour flight, and not a particularly long transfer at the other end), with a couple of nice restaurants and bars as won't want to be doing too much out there.

A couple of places like Amalfi coast or even Venice are just a ball ache to get to from airports - and we are leaving kids at home so is only going to be a Friday morning to Sunday afternoon trip so want to make the most of it - and it's our 10th anniversary so need something a little bit special at least.

Maybe San Sebastián - although that’s about an hour from
Bilbao.

Varenna on lake como is about an hour on the train from Milan and is lovely. Great hotel there with a pool overlooking the lake and lots of nice restaurants.

But hugely expensive.

I found Venice a pain in the arse really but I did go there for two days in late August ahead of going to the Dolomites so perhaps it wasn't the best time.

The waterbus from airport to city isn't very expensive and makes it pretty easy to get there. from memory about €12 one way but that was about a decade ago.

That was where I was looking, but for a long weekend doesn't seem worth it?

I've done the long weekend there a couple of times but it isn't the 'easiest' granted.

I was lucky enough to have my trip all paid for as it was a work trip. I think the water taxi was something around £100, one way. I went in May, just before it becomes unbearable with heat, tourists and smells! The waterbus sounds much more reasonable.

Bilbao / San Sebsatian / Santander

Quite close to one another and each has their charms. Bilbao maybe a tad industrial but makes a good base.

Not too far from the coast, in Europe, cheap.

Kotor Bay in Montenegro is stunning

Cheapish flights with EasyJet from Gatwick to Tivat in just under 3 hours, 30 minutes in a cab from the airport -

Stockholm. Beautiful city with water all around. Very quick train transfer from Arlanda into the centre.
Camogli, or some of the other seaside towns in Liguria. About 25 minutes from Genoa airport.

Palma, Mallorca - perfect for a weekend trip with cultural stuff, shopping and brill waterfront / marina / restaurants / bars.

Nice is also, er, nice at that time of year!

Oslo, if booze prices are not a major consideration! Ditto Stockholm.

Agree other suggestions of Valencia and Alicante.

I've stayed in Limone on Lake Garda and it's absolutely stunning - Brescia and Verona airports both not too far away (probably towns on the south of the lake that make the transfer time <45 minutes).

If not, I have heard good things about Dubrovnik as a pretty city break.

Can thoroughly support this suggestion. Been to Lake Garda and Dubrovnik a few times. Bardolino on Lake Garda is also nice. Fly into Verona airport and 45min by car.

Dubrovnik is nice but pricey, I'd recommend staying outside the city and going into the city for a day trip. Have a look art Cavtat which is 45 mins by water taxi. lts less that 30 mins from the airport, a beautiful natural harbour and half the cost of staying in Dubrovnik.

If you have a liking for Italy than I really like Florence.

Malta not bad shout.

As suggested above Copenhagen is a great city.

If you 2 fancy getting wavy without the kids the Damn whilst it's perhaps a little quieter is good shout.

Of course we all know Nice is nice.

Kiev for a bit more of the beaten track though the airport transfer is bit of an arse.

Brussels for bars

Bruges for prettier bars

Definitely Bruges; it's a fecking fairytale.

Naples. Always Naples. Dirty, noisy, horrible place which at the same time is incredibly beautiful and mesmerising. Also, has fantastic food which is very cheap (think best pizza and ice cream in the world).

Good hotels with sea views and pools include:
San Francesco al Monte
Romeo hotel
Grand Hotel Vesuvio
Hotel Royal Continental

The locations of the latter two are best.

Lisbon has to be my favourite city break, great food, beer, coffee, pastries. Great attractions to visit and can get around easily by tram.

Valencia also a very nice city

Agree with Valencia, so compact and easy to get around. The dry river bed at the top of the city is a good amble. The Puente de las Flores is stunning.

Current restrictions for Italy may rule that out though, as you have to have had your last Covid vaccination within 180 days of arrival.

Short flight to Lisbon or avoid hassle at airports by hopping on the Eurostar to Bruges. Both recommended.
