Played well today I thought
at 17:51 13 Apr 2024

Back to our snappy best in the first half, unlucky to go behind and should have got another goal (at least) ourselves but did well.

What’s lacking at the moment is the squad depth and fitness to change games late on. We didn’t have direct running threat off the bench today and so whilst we brought good players on, they didn’t look to stretch the game. Burns, Hirst and Clarke potentially being back for the last week of the season adds plenty of that.

It’s been a weird and kind of frustrating way to do it, but we are top of the league after a week in which we’ve lost to Norwich and haven’t won a game. It is entirely in our hands and whilst we haven’t capitalised, we certainly don’t look the wobbliest of the contenders. It will probably help us to know exactly what we need from our games given the way the fixtures fall, but I’d like to think now that two wins out of three will see us over the line. See you all at Hull and Coventry!

Parking at Gatwick
at 14:24 10 Apr 2024

In a strange TWTD circle of life moment, I have to drive to Gatwick immediately after tonight's game.

As someone who lives in Ipswich I haven't really experienced the fight to get to the A12 after a game before any tips for best route out? Any advice on roadworks planned on A12/M25 also appreciated, thanks.

My thoughts on yesterday
at 14:18 7 Apr 2024

Pre-match

The policing on the walk to the ground from the townhouse was dangerous and heads should roll over the logistics of that. Two genuine flashpoints where they escorted the walking Ipswich fans into a waiting 30-50 Norwich group. Plenty of posturing and few actual punches thrown, but could have been absolute carnage in other circumstances. Don’t be surprised if the Norfolk plod response is to close the Townhouse next time rather than blame their operation.

The game

Another one where our midfield balance caused us problems for me. We struggle when teams pick up pockets wide of our midfield two to create double ups - Morsy/Luongo don’t want to vacate their space, the full backs don’t want to over-commit and the tens are not really interested in that work. Stuart Armstrong did it masterfully for Southampton the other day and it’s a worry that we can’t really get out easily in these games because of massed bodies squeezing our space (two banks of four out of possession for Norwich) but that others can get through us quite easily by playing into that wide midfield channel. Ultimately it was a very low quality game and Norwich will be delighted but I’d fancy us to work it out a bit in a two-legged play-off game.

Atmosphere

Definitely the worst from us I can ever remember there, by quite a distance. Obviously lots of talk of these free 400 tickets but it didn’t seem like there was 1,600 others chomping at the bit for it either. Usually at Norwich it’s a case of too many people trying to get chants going at once, but yesterday there were just hundreds stood there offering nothing. In the early second half there was a concerted effort to get blue and white army going for a long time and it could have been a Barnsley-esque moment but it just never gained enough momentum despite a fair few trying.

Any rumours of Norwich away kick-off day/time yet?
at 13:49 4 Mar 2024

Just looking at the Sunday, Sky will have Rangers v Celtic, Liverpool v Man United and the JPT final all on so may not want/have room for our game too? Possible Saturday lunchtime kick-off would be alright.

Probably a short memory of mine, but when was our last Saturday game at Norwich (think the play-off game was, but regular league fixture)?

Someone may have already said this as I stayed in Birmingham over the weekend and so missed the post-match stuff, but he's exactly the type I'd be looking to compliment Hirst with in the squad.

Presumably Fulham would want an absolute boatload in order to sell, but he'd definitely fit the upside potential that we like to purchase with. Otherwise maybe a conversation with them to see if they fancy loaning him higher up the division in January could be had.

Some summarised thoughts on last night
at 09:28 20 Sep 2023

My biggest success story last night was the win for our squad depth. We went into last night with arguably our two best players (or certainly our two most creative) in Davis and Broadhead missing and still looked really good. Obviously credit goes to Hutchinson and Williams for slotting in so well, but you have to respect the amount of work that goes in on the training ground that makes those changes seamless.

On a similar strain, more praise for Burgess and Hladky. There are two players who I'm sure the vast majority of us thought would be jettisoned on our way up from League One but who look every bit top end Championship players atm. Despite higher pedigree, Walton and Tuanzebe are going to have a real battle to get themselves in to the side when fit.

Minor criticism must go to Jack Taylor. You can see why they like him - physicality, a great engine and can pop up in some good positions, but I really can't see McKenna having him for long if he doesn't work on keeping the ball better. When we chuck bodies forward as we do, it is imperative that we don't give away sloppy balls against an exposed rest defence. Morsy and Luongo are massive parts of this team atm, so fitness, yellow cards and international tournaments are going to test us in the next few months.

I wasn't able to go last night so a quick note on the coverage. Sky Red Button absolute garbage, so don't bother with that. I switched to Town TV at half time and it was loads better - different camera angles, replays and good commentary/analysis. A quick comparison showed that Town TV's stream was actually slightly ahead of the Sky coverage too (with me using the red button on the actual Sky box, not streaming). On both streams the Ipswich fans sounded fantastic.

I’m currently in Tenerife and am trying to buy a match pass for today, but when I go on the website it’s only allowing me to purchase an audio pass. I have tried clearing the cache/history but the problem persists. Can anyone advise? Using an iPad Pro if that’s in anyway relevant.

Atmosphere and general thoughts
at 12:06 8 Jan 2023

Made a late decision to go yesterday and so ended up sitting in the lower Churchmans for the first time since I was about 16 (view was like watching those Town in 5 videos that they put out after the games).

First of all, thought it was great that there was such a good crowd in for such a game - the areas that were open were pretty full and the lower North looked especially good. Thought the team repaid them with an impressive performance - Rotherham might be the worst that the Championship has to offer but they didn't lay a glove on us and we played some really nice football at times.

The atmosphere was weird for me - I could see the Blue Action lads at the back of Section 5 doing brilliantly and could hear them but it the sound certainly didn't travel to make it loud in the South Stand (in fact the 30 or so Rotherham fans singing Matty Taylor's red and white army sounded much louder in the second half) and it was only when the chants of Super Kieran McKenna or Allez Allez Allez went up (and the rest of the North Stand joined in) that it was significantly audible (and also caused the rest of the ground to clap and join in at a murmur).

I realise this is a bit rambly but something really needs to improve the acoustics in the ground so that the good work being done by Blue Action doesn't go to waste - a similar amount of Palace fans in their ground make a hell of a racket and have fans joining in throughout the game. I realise my comment above about the closer fans sounding louder isn't rocket science but it seems like our ground is one of the few where 30 fans sound louder than 500.

Currently sat in the stands waiting for Croatia v Morocco with a bit of time to kill so thought I’d do a Reddit style thread where I’ll try and answer any questions people have on what it’s like out here if of any interest to anyone.

Have been here since Saturday so hopefully be able to provide a little bit of insight outside of the main media reporting.

That was so stressful

Some lovely play from both centre midfielders today but we gave the ball away so often in there and didn’t really have control of the game at any point. Morsy back in on Saturday and I’d be half tempted to stick him alongside Humphreys over Ball.

Aggressive defending
at 09:23 5 Oct 2022

Something I thought was very good last night was how we got on the front foot and squeezed the pitch to make high tackles, pressures and interceptions with our centre backs. Thought it was a key part of how we played - so often in the past we’ve faced teams sitting in like that and their lone forward has managed to make things stick so they could get runners off him. Absolutely none of that last evening really, and that lead to us being camped in their half all evening.

McKenna spoke of the need for patience in games like that last night and hopefully how comprehensively we dismissed them once they tired and we made subs will encourage everyone involved (both on and off the pitch).

When was the last time we ended the season on a positive note?
at 10:41 7 Mar 2022

I've been thinking about this quite a bit over the weekend and on the drive back from Blackpool.

Saturday was another performance where I came away from the ground and thought this is again a team with a clear plan, a way of playing and a genuine progression from week to week with new ideas. We played some wonderful football at times on what was effectively a park pitch - one-touch football, trust in possession in all areas of the field, runners getting in behind. This is a reflection of a management team with an ethos and quality in terms of both being able to communicate that in such a way that the players can enact it, and in the players themselves in being able to carry it out.

It probably is the case that we don't get promoted this season, but it would be a big step change for us as a club to go into a summer without needing to make wholesale changes to the management team, playing squad or style of play. I'm still genuinely struggling to think of the last time that was the case - even at the end of the play-off season with Mick we kind of limped over the line and went into the post-season with hopes of building a more fluid side in attack.

The worry is around there will be some churn as an inevitability - can we keep Celina? Do we need to sell Edmundson or Woolfenden to finance this model? I hope that the upward turn at the end of the season makes the answers to these (and any other questions) a little easier to answer.

I thought we were brilliant in the first half last night
at 08:51 23 Feb 2022

Properly good - playing football in an exciting and free-flowing style, lots of one touch passing, beating players and creating good chances as well as pressing in a way that didn’t give Cheltenham a second to breath.

Second half was obviously frustrating, we ran out of steam (and I thought we lost the plot a bit last 20 with the change of shape) but if that first half is a window of what’s to come then we have cause to be very excited about this Ipswich team going forward.
