European weekender..... 14:23 - Feb 7 with 3660 viewsitfcjoe

....trying to book something for a weekend in late June to go away with Mrs itfcjoe and seeing if any recommendations here as proving to be a bit awkward

Want somewhere with a nice view, preferably of some water like a nice lake or a coast line, that is easy to get to (i.e. ~2 hour flight, and not a particularly long transfer at the other end), with a couple of nice restaurants and bars as won't want to be doing too much out there.

A couple of places like Amalfi coast or even Venice are just a ball ache to get to from airports - and we are leaving kids at home so is only going to be a Friday morning to Sunday afternoon trip so want to make the most of it - and it's our 10th anniversary so need something a little bit special at least.

That was where I was looking, but for a long weekend doesn't seem worth it?

I've stayed in Limone on Lake Garda and it's absolutely stunning - Brescia and Verona airports both not too far away (probably towns on the south of the lake that make the transfer time <45 minutes).

If not, I have heard good things about Dubrovnik as a pretty city break.

Lisbon has to be my favourite city break, great food, beer, coffee, pastries. Great attractions to visit and can get around easily by tram.

Valencia also a very nice city

Lisbon. About 2 hours flight, fairly cheap, great food, decent bit of history and great beaches within about 30 minutes.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Great minds Kazza, great minds. I'd add in Porto as well.

What about Barcelona?

Sitges just near Barcelona is a lovely place. Right on the coast and with some great bars and places to eat. Plus Barcelona is only 30 mins away by train if you fancy a day trip.

Agree on both. Lisbon is stunning and Valencia's beach area is a lot nicer than Barcelona's

Annecy (and its lake) is a lovely spot, about 45 mins from Geneva airport.

The Italian lakes, ie. Garda, also great and very accessible.

Porto as others have said is nice but flight a bit longer.

If you have a liking for Italy than I really like Florence.

Malta not bad shout.

As suggested above Copenhagen is a great city.

If you 2 fancy getting wavy without the kids the Damn whilst it's perhaps a little quieter is good shout.

Of course we all know Nice is nice.

Kiev for a bit more of the beaten track though the airport transfer is bit of an arse.

Brussels for bars

Bruges for prettier bars

As you seem to be leaning towards Italy by what you’re ruling out then Rome (Ciampino) is only a 20 minute transfer to the city.

You can do as much or as little as you want but even if you don’t want to walk much then there is tonnes of restaurants within a kilometre of all the touristy locations (Colloseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Vatican) and a lot of them aren’t that expensive. Almost every single street has something to look at so you really can’t go wrong.

Will probably be mental in June though which would be the downside

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

Might be wise to avoid Kiev at the moment...

Krakow, easy transfer to the centre, some cracking restaurants and easy to stroll around plus found the locals incredibly friendly. Plenty of sights to see and very good value for money.

Salt mines and Auschwitz short bus ride away.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Alicante?
Beautiful beaches, airport isnt crazy far away and quite a lot to do there too with the castle and a pirate island called Tabarca a couple of hours boat trip away.

Yes a good point.

If it all calms down though then it's lovely and v hot in the summer. Beaches that run by river and fascinating to see soviet era meets new architecture.

I fairness also like to result in getting slapped by the Mrs at every street corner.

Yes, Valencia came to mind when I red Joe's post. Good food, a bit of culture and a beach.

Lisbon is great too as is Porto.

Copenhagen, cracking little city

Was going to say similar. In June then Scandinavia has got to be worth a punt.

Copenhagen is a bit dull, but if you are only there for 36 hours then you wont have time to get bored. Short flight too.
