And damning endorsement of what most Town fans knew anyway.
Good when he first comes in but hasn’t a clue how to take it forwards .

Bit of both.

Did some good work, especially on a budget.

But instilled a bit of a poisonous 'us and them' legacy that is only just being weeded out.

I think Mick would now be best as a relegation fight specialist who joins a club for 6 months in Jan.

Yes but some of our fans have to pretend that Mick was the worst thing ever to happen to the club so they can justify their unwavering support for the sh!t show that's followed. People need to move on, we're fast approaching 4 years since Mick left and yet the most rabid anti-Mick folk are still starting threads about him. It's very odd.

And the other point, from a Cardiff perspective, is the state of the club after Harris left and, before that, when Harris was appointed. The common thread isn't MM here.

It applies to most who start these threads though. It's really odd to be honest. I know he's an ex-manager but it's been 4 years. It feels like Mick is the Brexit of TWTD (the football section at least, Brexit is the Brexit of the general forum). He did a good job here, it was time for him to go, we move on (in a mostly downward direction).

He certainly did a very good job when he first went in at Cardiff, but it went south so quickly this season which I was surprised with. You look at their squad and they are very decent with real quality. With all the fall out from here, it's hard not to say that MM did a good job with us especially with the financial constraints he was working under, but equally the time was right for him to go. MM's brand of football has a shelf life and as Ng alludes to, other teams quickly suss out how to play against it.

Oh I agree. Although I think he is brought up as much by his supporters as he is by his detractors.
But this is a board that still debates Pablo v Kuqi, so there's no hope...

"Without the ball it was ok we were getting into shape trying to press teams. But once we got the ball we didn't really know where everyone was going to be, or what to do.

For me that sums up Ipswich perfectly under Mick.

The bottom line is, as fanciful as it sounds, football is in the entertainment business.

Mick McCarthy isn't.

I don't think the 'us and them' legacy, by the time he left was that bad - it was at the end of his reign - but look at how positive people were at start of 2018/19 despite replacing good players with poorer ones!

I agree with the last para, go in, get organised, pick up points, bank large bonus, put feet up for 8 months then go again

WHen he came in we were bottom of the league, and barely able to put out a team without using a myriad of loan players, packed with bad apples and heading only one way.

When he left we had a good solid core of a squad, some promising youngsters and had just finished mid table - there was a real opportunity to kick on, an opportunity that was well and truly squandered by Hurst and Evans.

Mick gave us a good peak, but also a trough. His time was up with us about 2 seasons before he left. Had Mick stayed one more season I doubt he would have kept us up. Chambers, Sears and Skuse were about L1 quality at that point, maybe we'd have kept Waghorn and The defender who I always forget the name of, but Evans wasn't about to give him money out of nowhere unless we sold.

Our squad was unbalanced and Mick was never going to be able to get us to the top half of the table without some TLC from the board room.

He started at Town and we were well adrift at the bottom of the Championship table going into November. He finished here (and I include the few games after he left under Klug in this) in 12th place iirc. Above both Norwich and Leeds who in the two subsequent seasons were promoted to the Premier League! I would hardly call that in "roughly a similar state". When he left we had Bart, Chambers, Waghorn, Garner, Skuse, McGoldrick, Knudsen, Webster et al at the club with the likes of Downes, Bishop and Dozzell coming through - the nucleus of a decent Championship club - hardly the bunch of jouneyman that he inherited from Jewell and certainly not "a lesser quality squad!" At least be fair in your assessment of the man.

Not sure the squad was unbalanced. It had a blend of youth and experience with a good smattering of players at or close to their peak as well. Every year Mick successfully added quality through loan signings to supplement it and I'm sure he'd have done so again. I really doubt he'd have taken us down in 2018/19, we were nowhere near relegstion in his last year here and he wouldn't have damaged the squad the way Hurst did.

Im not one to jump on Skuse and Chambers, but I think they were starting to slip under the quality of Championship in Mick's penultimate season. We were a team without a good quality midfield core, and we needed more than that to drive forward.

I think Mick probably knew that to an extent as we almost saw Chambers go to Forrest on a free - but came in with a contract at the last minute. That window was confusing, I can only speculate we had a replacement lined up that fell through.

If MM left us in a trough, how would you define the three and a half years of unqualified success since?

I'm quite sure we would have stayed up comfortable under MM in 18-19, we were 12th the season before after all.

Perhaps he would have, but the moment we had, or didn't in his final season was concerning. I honestly don't think he'd have done any better the season after. Fron Mid March our last games were

Loss (Hull 3-0)
Loss (Bistol 1-0)
Loss (Brum 1-0)
Draw (Millwall 2-2)
Loss Brentford (1-0)
Win Barnley (1-0)
Loss Forest (2-1)
Loss Villa (4-0)
Win Reading (0-4)
Draw Middlesbrough (2-2)

We were well and truly in trouble to be stringing together a bad streak that barron of goals.

Hmm,,the problem was that Mick was replaced by the total incompetent Hurst, who was allowed to dismantle a decent squad & replace the better players with average League 1 players. No wonder Lambert didn't do great either, but the destruction of Town was down to Hurst, not what Mick left. A half decent manager would have kept Town in the lower half of the Championship.
