Jeremy Corbyn is the most smeared politician in history 16:52 - Jul 29 with 25597 viewsBrixtonBlue

People who say there is no smear campaign against Corbyn have either been taken in by it - or are part of it. Whether or not you like Corbyn/agree or disagree with his policies, surely this is not good for British politics/democracy?

With all the many many Corbyn posts on here, how many are actually about his policies?

I know it's not quite what you had in mind, but I think there's a case to be made for the most smeared politicians in history (well British history anyway) being Edward Heath, Leon Brittan, Greville Janner and Harvey Proctor, in terms of how their reputations were completely destroyed by false allegations of paedophilia, torture & murder, by someone (Carl Beech) who was himself last week jailed for padeophilia. Whatever anyone feels about the political careers of those 4, no-one deserves their lives & reputations to be wrecked in that way.

I'd say they were the worst smeared rather than the most. My OP was talking about sheer volume.

My mum, who's a proper Tory, voted Corbyn in 2017 purely because she felt like he was being bullied by the press and the Conservatives and that wasn't very nice or British of everyone.

Coincidentally, this was posted yesterday and was pretty scathing on the BBC and the journalistic integrity of the Panorama programme.

Lerman is a dissenting Jew ("self-hating") as are others at the Media Reform Coalition - the kind of voices that were completely missing from the Panorama "investigation" and have had almost zero coverage in the rest of the media either.

Why do you think it's a conspiracy? Our media is already predominantly to the right but even the centre-left of the Guardian is fairly opposed to socialism and didn't want Corbyn as leader. And even though the policies he presented are bog-standard social democratic in the rest of Europe.

No conspiracy. Everyone's just doing what they do, treating Corbyn as an opponent who must be defeated.

Completely unbalanced, of course. And also means that they are either creating the smears a la Mail and Express or turning a blind eye to them and just repeating them like the BBC and Guardian do. It's a low-water mark in our politics and media coverage that's seen a charlatan like Johnson get into power at the other end.

I think some of the articles written about him are far too harsh. That's quite apparent - he's everything they dislike and they don't want him in power.

But the most powerful thing Corbyn/Momentum etc have done since he's been leader is to use the Trump tactic and make your supporters hate the press. Point out those outlying articles that really *are* a bit ridiculous and use them to make the claim that every criticism is biased and unfounded.

Use terms like 'smear campaign' that evoke images of people rallying around and planning some sort of strategy against you and - BINGO - you've got yourself into a position where every criticism is 'fake news' and anybody who doesn't like you for any reason can be accused of being some kind of idiot who 'believes the MSM'

Let's call it a "smear bandwagon" then.

There are some political or editorial bods who have a specific and OTT agenda against Corbyn. But it's the passive acceptance or even joining in from supposedly more sober and objective politicians, media and members of the public that gives this narrative oxygen. These outlying, extreme opinions and accusations are either ignored or even repeated but never criticized and rejected.

It also sees a political discussion which completely ignores policy — unless it's about Brexit where Corbyn and Labour admittedly haven't been strong or consistent enough.

All while we see narrow interests being served and get a government and direction for this country which should be socially, economically and morally unacceptable in 2019.

Well this is slightly off topic, but Corbyn's not entirely blameless when it comes to his policies not being discussed. I used to work in the media (still do, although not as a journalist any more) and the stories I hear about him are ridiculous - his PR team sending briefings through an hour after newspapers have gone to print and things like that - which all end up getting discussed as 'ah, you see! The MSM ignored Corbyn's policy on xxx again'.

That's just amateur stuff.

Also, you only have to watch political programmes/listen to talk radio for a few hours to hear presenters saying things like 'we invite him on regularly, it's an open invitation to appear whenever he wanst, but he refuses'.

He's a 'man of principle' (when it suits him), and he doesn't like the media so doesn't deal with them.

Then in the next breath, it's all 'oh, but he's not getting the chance to get his policies across properly. It's all so unfair on poor Jeremy.'

The fact is, if you can sit down with Hamas for a discussion even if you disagree with everything they stand for, then you should be able to sit down with the Daily Mail/Telegraph/Sun and use them to reach out to their readers.

That he doesn't want to do that shows that he's either too scared to enter the lion's den (which, let's face it, politics is all about), or that he's just happy preaching to the converted on a street corner where everybody cheers his name and calls him the Messiah.

That's probably fair on the whole. Corbyn doesn't play the game of politics very well at all.

But on the other side we appear to have politicians and the media who put far too much emphasis on the game. Never mind Corbyn, that's resulted in the type of dodgy and dishonest PM and government we have today.

So whoever is leader of the Labour Party and however media savvy they are, I think the public deserves better coverage of the underlying concerns in this country and policies to rectify them. I certainly don't think we're going to get anywhere by ignoring them - in fact re: the Brexit referendum and its aftermath that's exactly why we ended up where we are.

Actually, I think that's media perpetuated nonsense.

What's the point of taking a position on the most divisive issue in British politics in a lifetime? I mean, if he'd have backed the outcome of the vote for democratic reasons, he'd have cut the support of his party in half. If he'd supported remain he'd have also split his party in half and been labelled disingenuous.

He chose to sit back and watch the Tories collapse in front of him. What he didn't reckon on were the ridiculous attacks of racism and support for terrorism.

He's spent his life in politics, so I can't believe he didn't see that coming. It's just a shame he and his team didn't have a better plan to counter the inevitable character assassination.

I think Corbyn's biggest failure is that he's a bit woolly.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure most people now realise that PMs don't really have executive power to represent the people.
[Post edited 29 Jul 2019 19:47]

You say he's spent his life in politics, but there is a massive difference between being on the back benches as opposed to being a big player in the game.

He needed to pick a side on Brexit, and sell that to his party members - this sitting on the fence has ended up pleasing no-one - the remainers don't trust them to be a remain party, and the leavers don't trust them to be a leave party.

It's like Theresa May, she kept trying to appease both sides but rather than gaining support she just kept losing it as she would go far enough to annoy those who supported her, but not far enough to get those who didn't.

Also the Labour party isn't split 50:50 remain leave - polls show it is roughly 75%, remain 25% leave.

Sigh, here we go again.

It's not about being needy. I just expect a response the same as you expect a response when you post me a link to challenge my views. You asked for a fixed link and you would respond - I provided one and you didn't. For two days.

You also posted in the thread AFTER I posted the link.

This is why you get the reputation of "The Glasgow Swerve." I've lost count of the times when someone posts a 'difficult' bit of evidence for you and you're suddenly busy.

If you want a sensible debate on politics you need to listen to other people's views/read their links, rather than just posting your own and then suddenly becoming busy.

Incidentally, Lowhouse hasn't offered a view on the report. He's merely belittled the author.
