Jeremy Corbyn is the most smeared politician in history 16:52 - Jul 29 with 25588 viewsBrixtonBlue

People who say there is no smear campaign against Corbyn have either been taken in by it - or are part of it. Whether or not you like Corbyn/agree or disagree with his policies, surely this is not good for British politics/democracy?

With all the many many Corbyn posts on here, how many are actually about his policies?

err, it wasn't 'the independent's findings'. it was an opinion piece written by someone who isn't a journalist. it was written by an lse academic who seems extremely pro-corbyn. it wasn't an independent editorial, it wasn't by an independent journalist. it's quite important to understand your source you know.

That's what I thought when the link said "independent voices". It's a broken link anyway but thanks for saving me the bother.

not sure what that's supposed to mean. i'm the radical here - the one that wants to see the tories defeated and replaced with a progressive alternative committed to redistribution. you and your gang are the ones who seem excited by impotent posturing and electoral irrelevance. it's your lot who are propping up the status quo. just saying.

is that what i said? your lot seem to have the opposition reins just at the moment - can't say i'm seeing many signs of the status quo shaking. the tories are in disarray and there's a complete absence of opposition - which seems to matter less than having a leader who is anti-american. and who's the one who's acting out of self-interest again?

If anyone is actually interested in how this is calculated (which judging by the replies so far doesn't seem overly likely) then here is the link to the actual study.

http://www.lse.ac.uk/media-and-communications/assets/documents/research/projects

I was involved in a study which used a similar methodology and even software terms (Hi Nvivo) so recognise this style of research. I humbly suggest that much depends on how the researchers coded:

"1) a critical tone, which corresponds more to a legitimate watchdog role, and 2) an
antagonistic tone, which could be seen as an indicator for attackdog journalism."

in each case. Having done some coding on my project, the temptation to code in favour of what you want to find is massive.

I know the TWTD style these days is to boldly stake out an unfounded/extreme/hubristic/plain daft position early on, and then dig in tirelessly for fourteen pages, and there's certainly lots to be said for that approach. But, it might just be true that large parts of the media are very anti-Corbyn, and that while some of the criticism he kops is fair enough, most of it isn't. And that equally, he isn't a particularly competent or effective leader of a political party, although he likely means well, and has campaigned effectively for lots of important issues during his career.

People always have and always will see what they want to see in people like Corbyn - a principled campaigner being hard done by by vested interests; an anti-semitic monster intent on bankrupting us all; or just a poor chap promoted a couple of levels above his level of incompetence.

Arguing over which it is is a game for fools unless you first understand why it is that you yourself see what you see.

Labour's policies generally poll very well. It's just the JC show tho innit? Couldn't care less about who does it, but the policies are sound and much needed. With or without the allotment dweller.

To be fair Corbz has achieved something though. He has taken you from having no interest in politics to being a full on fanboy. You still don't follow politics as such but the fact that you will go out of your way to support him at all times regardless of the content is something.

lots of the policies could be successful. but it's the other crap that comes with the corbyn gang that's the problem. his view of world affairs, his view on domestic security, his view on the uk's alliances, his view on terrorist groups, his view on conspiracy nonsense is all pure electoral poison. if you want the good policies you need to dump the crap that comes with corbyn and his acolytes.

What difference does it matter that it wasn't written by a journalist?! It's written by Dr. Bart Cammaerts, a Professor of Politics and Communication - probably better qualified on the subject than a journalist. And it's not his 'opinion', it's a study he conducted.

Try dealing with the findings of the study rather than a silly ad hominem attack.

Frankly, given his competence and history they've been pretty easy on him compared to Ed Milliband. Probably because Milliband stood a genuine chance of getting into power.

i was pointing out that it's an opinion piece and as giant ullaa has said the study's methodology is inherently subjective. our own little exchange has shown that to determine what is an unfair smear you first have to decide what is and what isn't true. the study has adopted definitions of truth and smear which give the 75% result. it's not rocket science.

Lowhouse is right. British journalists working for the Independent, are by definition independent.

This is modern Britain, not Airstrip One in 1984.

Listen, professors of politics, like any other experts in their field, are only truly impartial if their studies coincide with establishment interests. You're peddling the work of a conspiracy theorist or foreign agent.
