Have Ipswich ever had a reputable football firm? what was it called? when were they about?

Poll: Would you join in with a ‘Marcus Evans is a ****, he hates Ipswich’ chant?

Yes we did back in the day. As some have eluded to they were more people from Ipswich who liked to fight as oppose to Ipswich fans. A lot of people I have spoken to with England said we had a group of 'black lads' who would always show up for a fight. Nothing recent though, I do remember it kicking off against Coventry some time ago though ?

Poll: Will Paul Lambert be Ipswich Town manager on the final day of this season ?

Didn't have you down as a simpering bedwetter!

I didn't get involved in anything, far too much of a wimp but there was strange mix of frightening and exciting both at the same time

Far from it.
But there's a difference from having the inner steel you need when your buddies are face down in the muck such as I'm renowned for and mindless tribal shenanigans.

Sounds like we were always under the radar, as I have never seen any mainstream media pick up on any of our antics.

Ipswich certainly have a casual element. Majority of fans I see at Ipswich and a lot of clubs though seem like divs. Football shirts, face paint all that nonsense. ( wearing replica kit and face paint only acceptable for children in my opinion )

I read a book about firms (it was a free download on Amazon, I wouldn't financially support it) and it had multiple sections where people involved with various firms sent in their stories. I was expecting lots of bravado about taking 20 men on at once single handedly and giving them a good kicking etc but it all seemed surprisingly honest.

The story that came up most was how if they were outnumbered they would just stand a hundred or so yards away posturing until more of their lot turned up and they had the advantage so they would 'steam in'. They generally seemed quite proud of this.

Other stories were the pointless and mindless vandalism of pubs, cars and coaches. Apparently smashing all the windows of a pub whose owner has been serving you drinks for hours is something of a win.

My favourite story (for sheer stupidity) was about West Ham fans on the tube. Can't remember if they were the aggressors or the victims but one set of fans got pelted with coins, screws, marbles, bolts etc. If the definition of hard is throwing random shrapnel at people then i'll opt out thanks. I'd be more concerned about taking some poor bastard's eye out.

When I lived in Sheffield as a student and worked in pubs there, we used to regularly have the Owls Crime Squad and the Blades Business Crew in.

Such a weird bunch of people. They'd stand around chatting for a bit and then invariably kick off and wreck/get themselves barred from the pub. At which point the supporters of whoever they were playing would get on a train and go and drink in peace in their own pubs back home.

Could never work out why you'd trash your own pub.

Coventry was the 4-2 game when we came back from 2-0 down. Think Counago got a couple.

There was some trouble at half time and about 10 minutes before the end a lot of Town lads left and went back to the City centre where it went off again.

Biggest group I've seen in years was Cardiff away. Can't remember the year or the result or anything but must have been 300 or so Ipswich travelling down that day. We were in a pub beforehand and the local plod arranged for double decker buses to pick us up from the pub and take us to the ground.

Anyone else remember the trouble at Roots Hall when Mike Marsh scored a late winner for them? Quite a bit of trouble inside the ground with the Police and outside the away end.

I was at that Cardiff game. Police met us off the train and escorted us to a nearby pub which was to be ours for the afternoon. I just remember everyone being very friendly and there was no trouble that I saw. It was a good day though, on the Ninian park terracing.

In fact, I was at all 3 of those.

Was there a bunch called the Ipswich Spanners in the 90's, or have I imagined that (and if I have imagined that, what an odd thing to imagine)

Same people who moan about flares being let off at the ground. Probabaly see the casual element as the 'firm'.

You were probably still in ya dads ball bag when things got a bit naughty in the 1970,to the mid 80,s. its all "old hat" these days and is now the way it should be. Most people today have grown up. Clearly you haven,t.

Yes there was. I knew exactly who they were. I’m going back to 1986 when I was a Farah and Trimm Trabb wearing idiot. Can’t tell you much more aboout the Punishment squad as they are of a later date. I remember being caught up in some unsavoury trouble with Stoke fans when the Constantine Road bus depot was being built/refurbished.

I've been supporting Town since 1977 to the present. There has never really been a huge hooligan element, and certainly to the best of my knowledge anyway, a 'firm'.

All the so called Ipswich 'hooligans' tended to congregate in the north stand when it had a caged away section. That all but disappeared when all seater stadia became the norm.

Hope that helps.

Exactly my friend. I am just trying to find out what the situation was as I am a newer fan to the club and these things aren't well documented in the media.

Try reading The Glory Game written by Ian Hunter- Davies. He spent time following Spurs fans in the 70s. There's a reference in that to them liking to come to Ipswich. It's too rude to write here.
From personal experience in the so called hooligan years ITFC would struggle to deal with the likes of Chelsea etc. Having said that rare invasions of Churchmans were met with an occasional decent agricultural thumping.

It's fair to say when hooliganism is mentioned, Ipswich doesn't readily appear on the radar when clubs followings are mentioned.

I've no idea what goes on nowadays but in the past, Town have had groups of lads rather than one big organised firm who have clubbed together for one or two away days a year.

A few such as West Ham, Villa, Pompey have had a surprise when they've come down here expecting easy pickings and after the infamous Millwall 95-96 match, there were more than a few Millwall lads put on their backsides in the car park when the main story was the seat throwing inside at the final whistle.

Millwall - 95/96.

Christ alive what a harrowing day.

First we missed out on the playoffs (Scowie hit the bar down Churchmans if memory serves) and secondly we sent Millwall down.

I was10/11 at the time and my old man and I were waking back to the car when some random Millwall prick swung a fist at my dad, he leant back, missed the guys fist by the width of a beer mat then laid him out cold with a single punch.

Scary thing was, never seen my dad react like that to anything before or since, legend!

Short answer is no.

In the seventies, there were the occasional punchups but nothing organised.

The West Ham ICF set a trend for hoolies and other clubs followed suit. Birmingham and Leeds perhaps being the largest / most organised.

The IPS and Spanners were both wannabe hoolie gangs but both were low in numbers.

From memory, there was most grief when non-supporting Town fans attended games looking for trouble - thinking early 80s here. A few 'faces' from Chelmsford and Colchester.

The advent of CCTV and police filming fans killed the aggro in its tracks at and around the ground. A good thing.

Hiya

Mugwumps very older brother here.

Have to say you have managed to be almost 100% incorrect.

IPS eh? That was the big giveaway. Anyone that genuinely mentions IPS in a conversation definitely doesn't know the score.

ICF setting a trend? Always Man U mate.

Chelmsford and Colchester? Ha.

God, what a day.

I was 15 and at the game with my dad. Obviously the Millwall animals ripped the away sections to shreds but walking home through the PR car park we passed some little Millwall fella giving it the big one on the street corner, offering-up everybody who walked past. One of our fans, walking by, kept quiet and discreetly flicked his cigarette at him. The fag butt hit the Millwall lad on the head, he retaliated and knocked the (much bigger) Town fan spark out with one punch. He was face down on the tarmac. I remember being really worried for him as it didn't look pretty.

I'm glad football violence is largely under control now. It's the height of stupidity.

Not the thing to highlight on here really, talk about it in a pub maybe but not on a message board for shirters, nothing at all wrong with Ipswich when they are in force though.
