Naming a train 17:40 - Apr 18 with 5631 viewsuefacup81

Got chatting with a fellow train-buff the other day, and the subject of naming trains came up. For about £3,000, as well as the cost of the name plates, you can name a train.

With the new intercity stock coming on to the GEML next year, there'll be a whole batch of new trains needing names.

How about trying to persuade the club to revive the old tradition of naming trains after football clubs or, failing that, having a whip-round to name one of the new trains Ipswich Town and royally annoy that lot up the road?

Did you often cheer that one as it went by?

There is one I see at Euston quite often called the 'Virgin Invader'.

Feels a bit wrong.

I was just reading this thread to Mr Bluebell as he is an anorak when it comes to trains and he just said that there was one called Norwich City before I read what you posted Benters.

Whenever we catch a train he always wants to see what the name is!

A few weeks ago "Sunderland F C" was pulling a container train into Felixstowe docks. Had nameplate and club crest.

I know someone who always wanted to be run over by that train. When it happened he was chuffed to bits!

You mean a 'Sandringham' class B2 4-6-0 Thompson rebuild of the Gresley B17. It was No. 61639.

I'm sure that clarifies the situation.

If I had to name a train, I would name the train "In Vain".

That or"Budgie Defiler". Toss up between the two.

Interesting as I've already attempted to reach out to the railfeight company GBRF who already name some locomotives after UK football teams. Recently they accquired some additional stock and one of the loco numbers ended 781 and thought how perfect this would be for ITFC (78 for the FA Cup and 81 for UEFA Cup)
Maybe if more fans pestered them they might consider it?

Travelling up to Forest last weekend from Kings Cross we spotted # 91109 Virgin loco named SIR BOBBY ROBSON as we were waiting for our missed connex @ Grantham . It made the 1 hour delay slightly more bearable. That and the thought of a "DELAY REPAY" !!
