No British referees at the World Cup 15:30 - Mar 29 with 2481 viewsRadlett_blue

99 referees & assistants named; none of them from Britain. And this has been done by FIFA so no obvious Russian skulduggery.

Is that for the first time ever?

That is an absolute farce on the highest scale.

When you have the biggest league, some of the best referees, those use to handling world class players, huge matches and occasions like Champions League finals, how can there be no Premier League officials there, when they will no doubt have officials from the likes of the Swiss, Hungarian or Slovakian leagues.

Can't wait for the FA's comments.

Poll: Which lower league manager would you appoint if all of the following applied?

First time since 1938, but the English FA was out of FIFA between 1928 & 1946.
I haven't seen the full list but I hope most of those are refs with experience of controlling top games e.g. Champions' League, rather than the old FIFA way of trying to represent every country.

Looks like 10 refs allocated for Europe and then that dictates who the 20 assistant refs are too.

So really only saying that there wasn't a home nation ref in the top 10 for Europe. Which is probably fair enough.

...but there will be referees from Turkey, French Polynesia, 2 from the USA, New Zealand, Iran, Uzbekistan, Gambia, Ethiopia.

That's incredible. I mean I am all for giving other nations a chance, but you have to have referees that have taken charge of big games when it's the biggest stage of all!

Exactly. Most of the CL refs I have seen have been very good. But in a WC, you want the best refs, which means refs with experience of refereeing top class football.

No problem, we can spin this as a refereeing boycott of Russia. That will teach them to use nerve agents on UK soil.

They wouldn't get many games anyway as England are going to be going all the way to the final!

Or something...

I wonder how many penalties the Russian team will get from VAR? As many as they need to win I would imagine... it’s going to be funny

The only English refs who were UEFA Elite level and anywhere near World Cup levels of experience were Martin Atkinson and Mark Clattenburg. Martin is now too old under FIFA regulations and Mark decided to retire and take the role as Saudi Arabian Head of Refereeing. The only English ref now at Elite level are Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor who were both only promoted to that level in December last year.

Should have sent Mike Dean - That'd be a great way to protest Russia

So how does a ref from Uzbekistan get to Elite level?

Surely refereeing two teams of players worth an average of £50m each, dealing with egos like Mourinho, being watched live by 80,000 fans and millions on TV is a little but more qualified than refereeing players paid £30 per week in front of a crowd of 600?

An referee from Uzbekistan holds the record for the most World Cup games, and he refereed in the London Olympics! . Not sure if it's the same guy that's going to be there this year, but suspect it is - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravshan_Irmatov#Matches

But yeah, it does seem a bit of a jump from the Uzbekistan national league.

"So how does a ref from Uzbekistan get to Elite level? "

The same way an English ref would - work your way up from 3rd Category, through 2nd and 1st to Elite level. Starts with being nominated by your refereeing association, start reffing Youth age European league matches, get promoted to doing Youth Internationals and Europa League matches and then Champions League and Internationals. You don't make it to Elite level without a vast amount of big European match experience or dedication.
