Town Confirm Ward Signing
Monday, 1st Aug 2016 13:33

Town have confirmed the signing of midfielder Grant Ward from Tottenham on a three-year deal with an option for a further season. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were set to sign the 21-year-old winger or central midfielder for a fee understood to be £500,000.

Lewisham-born Ward joined the Spurs academy - where he is likely to have worked with Town academy director Bryan Klug - as a 10-year-old but never made a senior appearance for the Premier League club, aside from during the May 2015 tour of Malaysia and Australia.

He spent time on loan with the Chicago Fire under ex-Blue Frank Yallop in 2014 and at Coventry City a year later.

Last season he made 35 starts and eight sub appearances while on loan with Rotherham in the Championship, scoring twice, one of which, a superb strike against Burnley, won the Millers' Goal of the Season gong. He also picked up their Young Player of the Year award.

Ward, who will train with his new team-mates today, is the Blues' third signing of the summer after Adam Webster and Paul Digby.

The fee is the second highest the club has paid out since Mick McCarthy took over as manager behind the £700,000 plus defender Matt Clarke handed over to secure Webster from Portsmouth in July.

Ward may not be fit enough to start on Saturday having returned to action last week after three weeks out injured.

Rotherhams local journalist raving about him: http://www.southyorkshiretimes.co.uk/sport/local-sport/rotherham-united-how-gran

Hopefully this will allow Bishop to play centrally. Would like Bru in the midfield too. Over to you Mick, will be interesting to see how we line up on Saturday.

This is the kind of transfer i like. Not weeks of speculation and rumours and suggestion made up by the press and agents - just they identified the player they wanted then got him him and announced it. Really exciting signing. He will only have improved based on the season he had last year and with better coaches/players around him (that at Rotherham not spurs!) and more individual attention (than at Spurs!) he should have an even better year! COYB!

Well, well, well some good news as a promising youngster on the wing with experience of championship football and we can also assume technically good signs for our club.

I will not pretend on a having any insider knowledge of this deal, but as I said over the weekend we need to start trusting and see what happens.

Many moaned about playing Bish and Dozzell out of position, but perhaps it was lack of options as this deal was being worked on. If Stewart finds form or Lamah signs then perhaps our strike force becomes the one many want. Sears plus one other upfront. Midfield then looks strong, creative, young and homegrown.

Those that moan about Chambers at RB - I cannot argue about square pegs and round holes etc. However perhaps MM sees Emmanuel as the future but not yet ready (if he does) why spend on RB in these times.

My rose tinted view is in his first one and half seasons MM worked wonders with what he had, put the club first not spending but generated spit it and team work, made us hard to beat but kept us in the division despite the football being dull.
Play off season showed massive improvement and last season disappointed in many areas, look deeper though and you see the emerging youth (takes two - three years). Last season with Frazer fit, Didz fit, Bishop fit, we would have had our flair. MM also got in JW from Palace and AMN seemed exciting to start with.
My point is - we don't have the finances for quick fixes, but slowly I feel things are turning round and positively.
I will support the youngsters through what I'm sure will be some bad games, I will support MM and Mr Evans without being their biggest fans as in my opinion football management whilst rewarding is pretty thankless and if I were a millionaire I wouldn't invest in a football club.
I remember the great job Burley did and great entertainment we had yet sections of fans turned so quickly when we struggled, even Sir Bobby had many critics in the first 2-3 years at a time when the rich were not so far ahead of our club in terms of finances.
My next post - celebrating 3 points on Saturday (I hope) if not cheering on a new look entertaining young team, failing that looking hopefully to Stevenage.
Enjoy the season one and all and remember in our own way we all support, just have very different views.

Wickets - You beat me to it: "In Klug we trust." We shouldn't expect this lad to be a massive star from Day 1, but with some TLC I hope we've got ourselves a young player who will develop into something really good. As do most on here, I much prefer this kind of signing, even if it's a gamble, to the journeyman/last payday variety.

Positive news. Never seen him play so not really sure what to expect but hopefully the club will have watched him plenty of times to know he looks up to the job. Really hope he hits the ground running and gets given a fair chance to show us his stuff. Still keen for the Crystal Palace winger too as he looks quality. Doesn't hurt to have more than 1 option. I'd be surprised if he starts Saturday but hopefully he'll get a run from the bench so we can get an early glimpse of what he's about.
Good to see we have signed two young players too rather than the usual plus 30 fodder we've often signed in recent seasons.
Finally some more positive signs on the transfer front to help appease the growing bunch of concerned fans (myself included). So yes very encouraging, fingers crossed it works out well and he makes a real impact to the team this season. We can't really afford to wait for him to shine in a season or 2 as we are thin on the ground so we ideally need him to hit the ground running and get amongst it from the off. He's still very young so we can't expect him to blow away the opposition from the word go, but I'm hopeful he'll play a prominent role instead of just a bit-part role.

Is it Granty or Wardy or Wardo ?
Good signing, potentially great signing.
Getting a little bit excited now.

Yes! Cheered my Monday up a bit! Hopefully the winger we have been crying out for. Would love to see a pacey attack minded rb signed too, looking foward to Saturday a bit more now. Coyb

Not seen him but sounds exactly the sort of signing we need. Young, good education, pacy, a years experience at this level and reasonable fee.
More of the same please.

hit the nail on the head Steve_ITC_Sweden, we don't want any more journeymen and last payday pros. we want young hungry talent that want to make their mark. essentially, players with their best years ahead of them and not behind them. with webster and ward we have 2 potential players that could just fit the bill. if we could just the palace winger on loan and suddenly things in the portman road garden will look a lot more rosy!

Not going to go over the top as i'd never heard of him up until 2 hours ago - just hope Mick's spent this money wisely and he has one hell of a season...he looks a bit like Delli Alli, let's hope he plays like him!

Welcome aboard Grant.

Be good to get him used to his surroundings and team-mates during the pre-season games ... oh, hold on ... ah, doesn't matter, as he's another crock anyway. Madness.

ALL READ DANYLYLES LINK - I assume none of you have bothered as he has only one plus mark. Thanks Dan, if the report is anything to go by, Mick has shrewdly signed a very good player who is not yet the finished article but could represent a brighter town future. I am excited by this signing.

@LondonBlue73, nice post. People should read it & put some perspective it the negativity that is circulating at the moment. However, we still need a few more quality signings to come.
