McCarthy: Stewart and Connolly Can Move On
Monday, 14th Dec 2015 13:59

Town boss Mick McCarthy says wingers Cameron Stewart and Dylan Connolly can leave the club in January.

Stewart, 24, who is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2017, has made only two FA Cup sub appearances for Town since signing on a free transfer following his release by Hull City in the summer of 2014.

The one-time Manchester United trainee is currently on loan at Doncaster Rovers where he is impressing manager Darren Ferguson.

Asked whether he might come back into the fold on his return from Doncaster, McCarthy said: “No. Why? Take his appearance record since he’s been here, he’s not going to play. He’s got to go somewhere else.

“He knows that, by the way. I wish him well and I hope he’s doing well at Doncaster and he can find a club that he fits in with and where he plays well and he ends up progressing and has a good career.”

Irish U21 international Connolly, 20, joined the Blues in January last year from Shelbourne, signing an 18-month contract. The Dubliner was on the first-team bench on a number of occasions last season but without making his senior debut.

Connolly has made no impact on the first-team this season and McCarthy says his contract will be settled to allow him to find a club back home in January.

“Dylan will be released,” he confirmed. “We’ll make him a free agent so he can go and get a club in Ireland if he can.”

why do we bother taking people like Connolly?

hasn't Jack Doherty, George O'Callaghan, Ian Healy etc proven in the past that its a waste of time?

onwards and upwards.. COYB

shame about Stewart.. on his day a decent player but seems to have burnt his bridges with MM?

More of Evans' money down the pan. When will he start investing so much money in the club each year we no longer get players on massive contracts not performing? If we are serious about thinking about promotion we need a better class of loanee to send to lower league clubs.

Daryl Murphy like most Irish players start at a very low standard. I saw Connolly play at Braintree, he looked good although McConnell stood out a mile that game.

Not every signing will be a Mings, Murphy, Skuse or Berra class player. MM like any other manager with little money takes a lot of gambles on players, most won't pay off but some will. These ones didn't, others will

Had high hopes for Dylan... No idea what went wrong... I guess that getting Fraser and AMN on scuppered his chances?

I guess he was also less willing to cover the fullback then others so not too Mick's taste.

Or... If you read carefully... "caring club do not stand in the way of homesick youngster"

Surely the fact that we are paying up his contact to allow him to return home means either that he is a bad apple to have around OR we care! (maybe a bit of both)

But until I hear otherwise I'll be glad to choose to think the best and be glad to support a caring team

Why would we need wingers? We rarely play with any.

I heard you have to get picked for matches to clock up appearances?

Darren Fergus on did comment the other day and said Stewart has been better as an Impact player in recent weeks and has done well Coming off the bench. He also said Stewart trains well and is a good character around the club and hasn't caused him any problems and has a good attitude. Now that has widely been speculated as the problem with him at town. Now has he just not worked out here?? Or is it coz Mick just doesn't like him?? Found Fergusons comments interesting the other day.

The Connolly situation sounds a bit like homesickness to me, otherwise why not let him find a Club in League One or Two?

Stewart, well you only have to look at his photo to get a measure of the man. He had his chance and didnt take it, cheerio.

No surprise about Stewart with the McCarthy (lack of) style why would he want to nurture and encourage a youngster with creative potential.
I would not be surprised if Ted Bishop is carefully nursed back to fitness just in time to be put in the shop window as this close season's sell off à la Cresswell and Mings.

Yes Pablo.

Looking through the players Mick has had either on contracts(some very short term),and loans; means that nearly 50 players have passed through his hands, since he became Manager just over 3 years ago.

This doesn't include the majority of players who were at the club when he arrived, who he has also disposed of;just the ones he acquired and has subsequently got rid of

Mind you he only spent just over £150k on these players transfer fees; but brought in £8m(Tyrone Mings),although of course all these players had to be paid whilst they were here, and a lot of them didn't play for the first team at all.

This is not necessarily a criticism;but thought he had got through quite a lot of players,so looked it up and was surprised at just how many there were.

Personally would like to see Marcus allow his Manager to make one or possibly two marquee signings in the forthcoming window, that would enhance the first team, instead of players like Stewart and Connolly,Coke,Alabi,Toure,Malarczyk and Oar,none of whom so far have made a contribution to the first team.

Bluetond : There Must be an awful lot of managers like Mick then, that "cant be bothered to nurture "(Stewarts) talent, since the Clubs he's been out on loan too, have often had him sat on their bench, subbed early or simply not featured at all in the team.

The player is far more interested in his bank account, and despite Mick putting an arm around him and asking him to do certain things, the player has failed to accept the baton. Stewart , like many players, may have all the taldnt in the world, but if they don't have the application, they wont make it. Add to that list so called talented players such as,
JET, Taylor, Haynes, Garvan, Marcus Bent,

We all make hiring errors. I hired two people at the start of the year who turned out to be duds.

We all need to allow our 'good psychopath' to come out in times like these.

Cameron who?

Before we all cry too many tears over CS let's remember the last "flair" player that was hailed as the great blue saviour is without a club half way through the season. Last spotted on trial at forest and currenty sitting at home twiddling his thumbs, seems like the where of football agrees with Mick on that one so perhaps he knows what he's doing.

Connoly is a shame as he sounded like he had promise but maybe it came a little to soon. Footballing backwaters are littered with players who had potential they can all work out...

Christ, loom at Van Galls record, Rojo, Herrera, ARM just of the top of my head and that's with millions to splash.

Stewart going will hopefully free up wages, if you read Fergursons comments it seems that Stewart is not willing to sit o the bench and wants, as all players do, to start. The difference, I would guess is that most players say to themselves I need to work harder to try and force my way into the team and use that as motivation. Cameron perhaps would rather be a bigger fish in a smaller pond?

The Trouble with signing cheap options like Connolly is you are essentially taking a punt. Very few actually work out.

Stewart I suspect was an expensive freebie in terms of wages. But his attitude was poor to start off with, so no surprise he will move on. Henshall will follow I suspect, although I doubt he cost much.

I would like to think the savings will be reinvested but I doubt it.

People 'talk' about Stewart's attitude - What do those people actually know ??........ possibly nowt.

Stewart's main problem is he has FLAIR and it just doesn't fit into MM's thinking - we have a player in the team currently, who has as much (if not more) flair and ability than any other player I could mention in the Championship - and what happens to him ?? ....... CONSTANTLY played out of position.
In other words:- Virtually wasted.

His name is FREDDIE SEARS .......... what a waste of precious talent at Portman Road. Totally crazy for that to happen.

Flair players scare the daylights out of MM's style of play - therefore will have limited life, and opportunity under his management.

There consistently for all to see - other than for those who choose not to. And we have them.

jas0999 is right in that free and cheap imports is taking a punt . But some work eg Mings !! . Think of the complaints on here if we " never gave a lower league player a chance " ie to find another Vardy , Mings etc like every other club does

Whenever Stewarts come to Portman Rd with other teams he's been a right pain in the a**e and tore Chambers a new one the other year.
I really dont get how he's never been given a chance, you cant tell me he wasnt good enough to get the likes of Tabb and Anderson out of the team last season.

3 or 4 players that didn't make it and then there is Tyrone Mings!! me thinks Mick is well in profit!

Will McCarthy ever find a wide man who meets all his requirements! I'm finding it increasingly doubtful. The mangers rigid team formation doesn't help, nor does an owner with short arms and deep pockets!
McCarthy has well and truly stabilised our Championship status, surely if there was a time for player investment, it would be now. Unless I'm proved wrong in January, I can't foresee us breaking into top five come May.
Boss, all must be done on the cheap! Good luck with that Mick.....rigid formation and all that!

Definition of a winger at Ipswich is "someone who plays just in front of the fullback or sometimes behind him but never goes up the wing to put in a cross or make life difficult for the oppositions fullbacks ". That might change when Frasers back in the team, but I hope he's fit enough to get behind his fullback to cover.
