Jewell: Point Gained
Saturday, 29th Sep 2012 18:04

Town boss Paul Jewell praised his side for battling hard during their 1-1 draw at Barnsley, believing it was a point gained rather than two lost.

Jewell said: “I thought in the first half we did OK. We stifled them, we frustrated them, but we didn’t have that quality to go and get the second goal.

“But we battled hard enough and it’s a point gained rather than two lost, even though we were 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go.

“They won 5-0 at Birmingham last week, a fantastic result, they’re a good team who have their way of playing.

“I thought we frustrated them in the first half. We’ve lost three games on the bounce and the confidence of the team isn’t going to be sky high, but over those three games, against Wolves and Middlesbrough, I thought we were by far the better team, we created lots of chances but came away with nothing.

“Today we didn’t play anywhere as well as that but came away with a point. I think they’re unbeaten at home this season. They’ve got a way of playing, the manager’s done a brilliant job here.

“You never say you’re pleased [with a draw] but we dug in, grafted, but we’ve still got to add a bit more quality at key times.”

Jewell was pleased with central defensive pair Luke Chambers and Danny Higginbotham, who were renewing their partnership from the on-loan Stoke man’s spell at Nottingham Forest last season: “I thought they were steady.

“The way we set out to play certainly frustrated Barnsley in the first half. In the second half we started to give daft fouls away and invited a little bit of pressure.

“It was blowing a gale out there and in the second half we were camped in a little bit and at times slashing it clear. But that’s what comes when we’ve lost three games on the bounce and we’re all getting plenty of stick.

“We’ve stuck at it and arguably with Nathan Ellington’s header we might have nicked something, but I think that would have been unfair on Barnsley.”

Jewell confirmed that midfielder Luke Hyam made way due to a back problem, while he was concerned that Guirane N’Daw was at risk of picking up a second yellow card: “Luke got a bang on the back and the referee had a quick word with me about N’Daw at the break and I thought that the last thing we needed was to go down to 10 men.

“It wasn’t ideal, we’re also without two of our front players and, I’m not making excuses, but we were stretched.”

Michael Chopra watched from the stand and his manager says that the frontman could be involved at Brighton on Tuesday: “He just came to have some treatment. He’s not a million miles away, he might have a chance on Tuesday. He came to have some treatment to give him every opportunity to try and be fit for Tuesday.

“Luke was struggling. He didn’t want to come off, but he was honest enough to say he was struggling.”

Barnsley assistant David Flitcroft was much happier with his side after the break: “In the first half I was frustrated with the way we played too slow and too laboured and didn’t really get an angle on the game. We didn’t pass the ball as quickly with the tempo that we know we can.

“In the second half I wasn’t frustrated at all. We regrouped at half-time and the lads did everything that was asked of them.

“They played at the right tempo, hurt them, there were plenty of chances, plenty of goalscoring opportunities, we just didn’t have that lucky break that certainly Chris Dagnall deserved. When he hit the post I thought it was inside the post. I thought his work today deserved a goal.”

Time and time again we hear Jewell with such low expectations and beliefs, and this is clearly contaminating the psychology at the club. So many times he says the team is not good enough, blah blah blah. He should be telling the players they are GOOD ENOUGH, and instilling that self belief. Except, he himself doesnt seem to have it, just hanging on til he's sacked.
Boring boring interviews, inept tactics, doesnt seem to be instilling any fight or belief in the team.
Work manager Ipswich have EVER had. Tell you what, Mr Evans, if this is how you run your businesses I am surprised you have any clients! You own the football club, it reflects on YOU and YOUR BUSINESS. SORT IT OUT!

Barnsleys manager said judge me this season because the club spent a few bob on the players he wanted,So mr jewell you spent more than a bob or to so be brave enough and tell your boss the same .GO now and leave a a few bob so this club can get out of this hole you and the rest have dug.I was not looking for you to win this league but you should have some sort of shape about us and at least make us hard to beat i.e getting danny higg in october for a month or so is a joke, forget not scoring your defence was priority from last year and its still our problem to this day..

Barnsley are not as said Barca and years ago this would have been a bad result. We are a low to mid championship side and lets not kid ourselevs , right now as attractive to most players and managers as a pork chop in a synagogue.
As a PJ backer in the recent past im finding it impossible to continue my support of him(not my club)and believe ME is of the same opinion. ME will have found a replacement before PJ gets the boot.

Whilst the points made about Jewell having little money re fees/wages to strengthen this year. Barnsley are 1 of a number of clubs with a lot smaller budget than us who seem to get a squad of hungry talented players willing to play together and fight for their team. Jewell has proved incapable of doing this instead relying mainly on players who were good in 2006. Jewell has failed and will NOT turn it around. The longer he stays in charge the less chance his replacement has to keep us up. Our next 2 matches are against the top 2, even given the unpredictable nature of this league can anyone seriously see us competing in these games with the current set up?
Jewell out, someone like Karl Robinson in

The second half performance wasn't good enough, neither was the result ...cumon people how many seasons would we be happy with anything less than a comfortable win against Barnsley. We shouldn't settle for clinging onto a point.
I back the team at the game but when its over and I reflect on it, Paul is too deep in the 5h1t to ever turn this around, we might get a surprise result here n there but he's never get us in the playoffs. We got to at least be in there with an outside chance of it at our club.
Paul, you have handled yourself with dignity but it's time to do the right thing

Heard his brief interview after the game on the Football League show and he sounds like an utterly defeated man, what he must be like at motivating the players must be beyond me!
Certainly can't see us winning at Brighton after their defeat yesterday and at very best somehow we might scrape a draw but I doubt it - sad days!

If we were told before the season started that to draw 1-1 with Barnsley was a good point gained, I don't think anyone, or more specifically Paul Jewell, would agree. However, this result now in the situation we're in is being praised due to our horribly low expectations! Perhaps from the performance we may see a point gained, but from our long-term aspirations and expectations, it is two big points (and a huge chunk of morale) gone to waste.

You could really see why we are struggling, A 1 month loan player new to the club running the show, thank heavens he did, no midfield player at the club looking likely to score a goal! poor Jason Scotland running himself into the ground trying his heart out! one or two others Martin,Murphy only play in fits and starts then hide! No balance in the side we just settled for trying to stop them playing! If we are to be more than relegation dogmeat we must play our own game, sorry but i dont think this manager is capable of moving us foward.

This is not a bad squad with one or two exceptions ( Thomas & Chopra ) but the rest ok if we had a decent manager instead of a complete waste of space they would be ok not great but ok

Reading todays posts even the PJ fan club have given up. It looks like we are in for a long painful descent. Remember dont moan because that means you're not a true supporter.

Pretty Standard Town performance for this season. "Frustrate" the opposition by passing it sideways and blazing it wide or over. A goal by a deflected free-kick to get us a point pretty much sums up what the team deserves from current performances.

Bluey123 you obviously care vey much to take that stance im amazed and saddened to see fans getting stick because they want jewell out, i never wanted him in the first i really believe he's a chancer nothing more. It seems to me theres indaviduals out there who believe we should get behind the manager even if he was ken Dodd. As ive said before i wish i knew the man for the job but i dont have the answer. Ive kept quiet for a few years since Sheepshanks made a complete balls up. The last good appointment was Joe Royel i though he was the wrong man but he turned out he done a great job considering what he was up against. We the Fans need to stick together Owners, Managers and players come and go but the fans are always with the club its in yer blood.

Judging by his interviews of late Jewell cannot even motivate himself never mind the players!

As a club we are sleepwalking into League 1 with barely a whimper.

Consider this! What comes first, the players or the gameplan. Ie does the manager first decide on a playing strategy and try to get the players to conform to said strategy or does he design a gameplan around the players available. PJ has tried both approaches without any discernable success so what does he do next? Answers on a postcard please.

Interestingly, amongst all these negative posts and "jewell out" demands, it is very hard to find any constructive convincing explanations of what needs to be done to turn this around. I exclude "change the manager" unless it comes with a caste iron argument precisely what this new manager can and will do with the current squad of players. Because Marcus Evans is notr going to be flashing the cash.

I think we need to wake up and smell the coffee here.
Who among us really believed prior to the start of the season that we would be in the play-offs?
Very few (unless you have been living in dream land).
We concentrate a lot on the players WE have, but never compare ourselves to other squads. Most of the other team squads are much more versatile than ours.
We have to try and make sure our results are better than Millwalls, Charltons and Peterboroughs. Nothing more. This was always going to be a season where we struggled against relegation.
Paul Jewell is doing a great job with little resources. We can't expect a top 6 finish unless we live in cloud cuckoo land....
We should stop criticising the manager and get behind him. If we can escape the drop this season I will be happy. Maybe next season we can then go for a strong top 10 finish.

"Paul Jewell is doing a great job with little resources" ? It's not the coffee you've been sniffing. He has had more resources at his disposal than two thirds of the other managers in this league. There are a number of managers who can truly claim to have limited resources who have teams playing a decent brand of football proving that the art of managership is not just founded on the thickness of your wallet. Of course it's easy to claim now that we never had a chance this season but to most real fans there is no obvious reason for our predicament other than the ineffectiveness of the management team.
