Jewell: Point Gained
Saturday, 29th Sep 2012 18:04

Town boss Paul Jewell praised his side for battling hard during their 1-1 draw at Barnsley, believing it was a point gained rather than two lost.

Jewell said: “I thought in the first half we did OK. We stifled them, we frustrated them, but we didn’t have that quality to go and get the second goal.

“But we battled hard enough and it’s a point gained rather than two lost, even though we were 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go.

“They won 5-0 at Birmingham last week, a fantastic result, they’re a good team who have their way of playing.

“I thought we frustrated them in the first half. We’ve lost three games on the bounce and the confidence of the team isn’t going to be sky high, but over those three games, against Wolves and Middlesbrough, I thought we were by far the better team, we created lots of chances but came away with nothing.

“Today we didn’t play anywhere as well as that but came away with a point. I think they’re unbeaten at home this season. They’ve got a way of playing, the manager’s done a brilliant job here.

“You never say you’re pleased [with a draw] but we dug in, grafted, but we’ve still got to add a bit more quality at key times.”

Jewell was pleased with central defensive pair Luke Chambers and Danny Higginbotham, who were renewing their partnership from the on-loan Stoke man’s spell at Nottingham Forest last season: “I thought they were steady.

“The way we set out to play certainly frustrated Barnsley in the first half. In the second half we started to give daft fouls away and invited a little bit of pressure.

“It was blowing a gale out there and in the second half we were camped in a little bit and at times slashing it clear. But that’s what comes when we’ve lost three games on the bounce and we’re all getting plenty of stick.

“We’ve stuck at it and arguably with Nathan Ellington’s header we might have nicked something, but I think that would have been unfair on Barnsley.”

Jewell confirmed that midfielder Luke Hyam made way due to a back problem, while he was concerned that Guirane N’Daw was at risk of picking up a second yellow card: “Luke got a bang on the back and the referee had a quick word with me about N’Daw at the break and I thought that the last thing we needed was to go down to 10 men.

“It wasn’t ideal, we’re also without two of our front players and, I’m not making excuses, but we were stretched.”

Michael Chopra watched from the stand and his manager says that the frontman could be involved at Brighton on Tuesday: “He just came to have some treatment. He’s not a million miles away, he might have a chance on Tuesday. He came to have some treatment to give him every opportunity to try and be fit for Tuesday.

“Luke was struggling. He didn’t want to come off, but he was honest enough to say he was struggling.”

Barnsley assistant David Flitcroft was much happier with his side after the break: “In the first half I was frustrated with the way we played too slow and too laboured and didn’t really get an angle on the game. We didn’t pass the ball as quickly with the tempo that we know we can.

“In the second half I wasn’t frustrated at all. We regrouped at half-time and the lads did everything that was asked of them.

“They played at the right tempo, hurt them, there were plenty of chances, plenty of goalscoring opportunities, we just didn’t have that lucky break that certainly Chris Dagnall deserved. When he hit the post I thought it was inside the post. I thought his work today deserved a goal.”

lowest goals scored in the division and nobody in the current squad is going to help us change that. I don't rate Chopra but think he might look a lot better if he played off a target man rather than being left on his own so if he plays against Brighton I'd like to see him partnered with Scotland from the start as they looked dangerous against Blackburn when Scotland was eventually brought on.

PJewellisaGod - don't know where your head is - although I could suggest somewhere !! - wherever - it's certainly not where it should be.

this is the twilight zone, where we wait for news of something many fans want but this result prolongs the agony, just drifting along with no wind in our sails.

God knows how we got to a point were we are releived to get a point at barnsley whilst second bottom of league. What the hell is happenning to us?! Season upon season is exactly the same, every autumn we turn into a pub team.

I think were in for a season of strife.

If Marcus Evans is going to judge Jewell over the next week or so then he really does no zilch about running a football club..Marcus needs to look at the standard of our results & performances over the last 20 months and wake up to the fact that things are in a right mess - on and off the pitch:

We leak goals on a weekly basis,
Home crowds are at their lowest for nearly 25 years,
The fans aren't happy with the management team or CEO,
we have no gameplan in place (old team last season, young one this season).

It really is amateur hour at Portman Road at the moment.

Jewell OUT
I went and thought the set up of the attack was a joke throughout the match-
Loach- I am not certain about him yet
The defence played well and looked more organised than recently where Chambers looks good and HigginBottom solid.
The midfield - Hyam is never a right mid - he does not have any pace and has no trick, Drury was lost in whatever his position he was in- left mid?, N'Daw played very deep and to his credit did win a lot of second ball- No-one would think that a new formation 4-3-3 away from home in a struggling is a good idea. Jewell seemed to have the forward 3 rotating defensive responsibility which in a struggling side (especially in the second half) had all 3 dropping deep! The substitutions just made things worse- Ellington at one time was left mid, he can't run, Ainsley hardly touched the ball, Loungo surely had to tuck in from the right but did not. Why would you leave Murphy up front when he has experience at left mid, Why would you put a right back at centre mid, when you have Loungo at right mid. Decision making from Jewell that left the team and fans confused. If Barnsley had committed a little more or had a little more luck they would have won,
We need to go back to basics, last season Martin playing off Chopra seemed to work, Murphy looked a capable left mid and looks a poor centre forward, I am not convinced by Hyam or Drury but they did play together in our good run, I have no idea what has happened to Jet- I am guessing that Jewell and him have fallen out but Jet needs to start playing like he can. We should play 4-5-1.
Everyone raves about Cresswell and OK in the current team he is nothing to complain about, but his lack of pace means that he never gets to the bye line and he is easily beaten when defending- plus his lack of height will be exploited more I think this season at the back post.
Brighton on Tuesday- If Barnsley have 66% possession against us then what will Brighton do? I guess score 4 or 5- we will find out how good Loach is I think

One other point is the modern day footballer that thick he cant think for himself when out on the pitch. We dont know what goes on at the club but surely players must speak up about Jewells tatics.
