Jewell: Point Gained
Saturday, 29th Sep 2012 18:04

Town boss Paul Jewell praised his side for battling hard during their 1-1 draw at Barnsley, believing it was a point gained rather than two lost.

Jewell said: “I thought in the first half we did OK. We stifled them, we frustrated them, but we didn’t have that quality to go and get the second goal.

“But we battled hard enough and it’s a point gained rather than two lost, even though we were 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go.

“They won 5-0 at Birmingham last week, a fantastic result, they’re a good team who have their way of playing.

“I thought we frustrated them in the first half. We’ve lost three games on the bounce and the confidence of the team isn’t going to be sky high, but over those three games, against Wolves and Middlesbrough, I thought we were by far the better team, we created lots of chances but came away with nothing.

“Today we didn’t play anywhere as well as that but came away with a point. I think they’re unbeaten at home this season. They’ve got a way of playing, the manager’s done a brilliant job here.

“You never say you’re pleased [with a draw] but we dug in, grafted, but we’ve still got to add a bit more quality at key times.”

Jewell was pleased with central defensive pair Luke Chambers and Danny Higginbotham, who were renewing their partnership from the on-loan Stoke man’s spell at Nottingham Forest last season: “I thought they were steady.

“The way we set out to play certainly frustrated Barnsley in the first half. In the second half we started to give daft fouls away and invited a little bit of pressure.

“It was blowing a gale out there and in the second half we were camped in a little bit and at times slashing it clear. But that’s what comes when we’ve lost three games on the bounce and we’re all getting plenty of stick.

“We’ve stuck at it and arguably with Nathan Ellington’s header we might have nicked something, but I think that would have been unfair on Barnsley.”

Jewell confirmed that midfielder Luke Hyam made way due to a back problem, while he was concerned that Guirane N’Daw was at risk of picking up a second yellow card: “Luke got a bang on the back and the referee had a quick word with me about N’Daw at the break and I thought that the last thing we needed was to go down to 10 men.

“It wasn’t ideal, we’re also without two of our front players and, I’m not making excuses, but we were stretched.”

Michael Chopra watched from the stand and his manager says that the frontman could be involved at Brighton on Tuesday: “He just came to have some treatment. He’s not a million miles away, he might have a chance on Tuesday. He came to have some treatment to give him every opportunity to try and be fit for Tuesday.

“Luke was struggling. He didn’t want to come off, but he was honest enough to say he was struggling.”

Barnsley assistant David Flitcroft was much happier with his side after the break: “In the first half I was frustrated with the way we played too slow and too laboured and didn’t really get an angle on the game. We didn’t pass the ball as quickly with the tempo that we know we can.

“In the second half I wasn’t frustrated at all. We regrouped at half-time and the lads did everything that was asked of them.

“They played at the right tempo, hurt them, there were plenty of chances, plenty of goalscoring opportunities, we just didn’t have that lucky break that certainly Chris Dagnall deserved. When he hit the post I thought it was inside the post. I thought his work today deserved a goal.”

A POINT GAINED , WHAT'S THIS BLOKE TALKING ABOUT !!!!

IPSWICH SHOULD BE GETTING ALL 3 POINTS TO TEAMS LIKE BARNSLEY,
JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW FAR OFF PROMOTION TOWN ARE.

WAS HOPING FOR TOWN TO LOSE SO JEWELL WOULD GET THE SACK
HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL WEDNESDAY NOW I GUESS,

JEWELL OUT !!!!!!!!!!!

I expected another defeat today, but it sounds like we were lucky to get a draw. I am afraid that if PJ remains as manager we will definitely be relegated. His initial appointment gave the club a boost and that coupled with the Bullard effect enabled us to avoid relegation that season. However, he has now been in charge for close to 2 years and I can see no evidence that the team has improved in that time. His attempts to sign players in the last window may have been hampered by our new strict wage structure but most of his previous signings have been unsuccessful anyway. Under his management our defending has got even worse and now we do not look like scoring many goals either. The players are lacking in confidence, and I sense that when they go onto the pitch they do not expect to win. They are trying their best and hoping for a good result but I suspect that they do not believe they will win. I suspect the truth to be that most (if not all) of the players, along with the vast majority of the crowd have lost faith in PJ. It is therefore time for him to go, before it is too late.

This makes little sense.

I hope you know that.

A good point ! - maybe, but only because we have been such rubbish so far.

Jewell talks, and talks, and talks about him being capable 'of turning it around' - can we please see more evidence Mr Jewell, in the form of action ?- and many, many less words about doing it.

Most (knowledgeable) supporters feel he is tactically clueless - I cannot say I disagree.

But remember, if we criticise him, Clegg, or Evans, as directed by some, we have to go to Norwich !!!! - highly intelligent directive from people I couldn't even begin to describe.

Yeah read the statistics - Barnsley 66% of the play, 13 shots to our 7 on target and we had all the yellow cards! - says it all really. I just wish PJ would stop tinkering with the midfield!
Just seen Birmingham have surprisingly beaten Brighton 1-0 (just goes to show what this league is all about) - this will most probably be bad news for us as I cannot see them losing 2 on the bounce at home in a matter of days!

How low have we sunk as a club to think a point away at Barnsley is a result we should be grateful for!?

Fair Play to whoever put that banner up! We should start flooding the place with them.

If we lose at Brighton Jewell has got to go. Drawing with Barnsley means he will 'cling on' to the job. It shouldn't be like this, he is either the man or he isn't, we cant have this uncertainty, or perhaps ME does think Jewell is the man, if thats the case then i'm flabbergasted. For me this isnt a point that will get us on a run, for me it just underlines how much the team is struggling and how difficult it is to get results nowadays even at clubs who have little funds and who we should really be getting decent results against. The fact the team keeps chopping and changing just shows how unsure Jewell is off himself, its almost like we'll stick him in this weekend, it was the same last season when he kept persisting with a diamond then changed formation, you cant afford to do that because it just eats away half of your season. Last season we had a comfortable formation and players playing every week. Yes we need to utilise the squad and some changes are enforced but I dont think Jewell has a clue about who should be playing or who shouldnt be. When other teams in this League rotate the team seems to continue playing the same way and fit in easily. PJ seems to just pick and choose anybody and has no strategy. The one positive is Higginbotham, and please let Murray loose, he may aswel stay at home if he is never going to get on.

luckily for Jewell only a few hundred saw the game. 34% of play, 3 shots on target and Clegg leaving before full time.

how is that Colchester are able to indentify and sort out a problem but at ITFC it's all about Jewell?

The day when the manager says a point at Barnsley is a good result is a sad day for this club, just walk jewell ffs.

Jewell I'm sorry but I'm not even gonna get angry about this but do the right hung and walk away. Otherwise I feel that we might get relegated. The club can only do better without you.

One point gained!! Sorry I not sure I understand, am I missing something, we were 1-0 up and once again couldn't hold on and keep a clean sheet! True we didn't concede two goals this time, but by my book it is two points lost, not one point gained, ffs!!

Gilesy. Yes, you see 'freak results' every week. Blackpool beat us 6-0, just got beat 3-0 to Cardiff. Winning by a big margin doesn't make you invincible.

if you witnessed the game, you would say we deserved nothing from the game.. well taken free-kick, but keeper gifted us.. Murphy and Martin should take a long hard look at themselves.. only small glimpse of hope from Hyam, Massimo and Scotland for me.. felt sorry for Higginbotham, played well considering defence was battered

By the sound of things we got battered today by a team that might be mid table by the end of season. This is a point more than we had but its nothing gained our keeper made 3 or 4 super saves and we were hanging on.PJ used his squad players like murf and scots and they did not fire, the midfield gets switched every game and the back 4 could not keep a clean sheet again. Its my view that this mess cant be fixed and PJ has run out of ideas,no matter what he does with HIS squad it wont work.Theres no doubt PJ steadied the ship when he came in but we are slowly sinking again,If pj gets any more games we,ll be down by xmas..

The stats at Brighton will be around the same or worse and I would take a draw against them all day long we are bereft of confidence we have a manager bereft of ideas and is starting to panic because he knows the end is nigh and there are supporters who are hoping to lose just to speed the changes up, In 40 years as an Ipswich supporter I've never known it like this. All we can do as fans is to support the 11 players on the pitch. COYB

Cant believe there is still a mixed reaction to these inept performances. After the way super Jim was treated 4 years ago, with the banners and protests to get him out. The level of performance now mixed with the time and money PJs spent there should be a lynch mob out! Will we have to be virtually relegated before the JEWELL OUT campaign takes off? JEWELL OUT!! JEWELL OUT!! JEWELL OUT!! JEWELL OUT!! JEWELL OUT!! JEWELL OUT!! JEWELL OUT!!

Who really would want this job, for all those thinking Arry is next wake up and smell the coffee

ITFC is a sad sad place, poor on the pitch, poor off the pitch and a stadium with less atmosphere than most Sunday league games

Is it any wonder we are where we are

im lost for words, i have been following town for neary 45 years and i think this is the lowest i have ever felt, RK was bad enough, i didnt think it could get any worse with him as manager but PJ has just provd me wrong , this town side must rank as the worst side i have ever know, sooner PJ goes the better for ipswich football club.

This must be the least posts ever(?) by this time on a Sat after a game, have folk just given up! Come on, there is always hope...even P/boro won today. Whether the future is with PJ or not, only ME knows but with the squad we've got on paper one or two good results could see us get on a run- we did it after 7 defeats last year and that was with our oldies squad.

drew, clearly not at the game, nothing wrong with the tactics today. unfortunately after hyam having to go off at halftime & ndaw having to be substituted mrant we had nobody to do the holding job which led to barnsley having too much time & space in the 2nd half.
and no, im not ,making excuses. we still should have done better. and alliedaz? u clearly not there neither. never knew the 2nd half was 70 mins long. it must have been if your comment of them battering us for 70 mins was true, as they werent in the game at all 1st half. not saying we were brilliant but were certainly the better team. and garv, ive criticised you in the past for negative comments, but have to say youre spot on. glad i not the only one who is awarw of why things changed for us in the 2nd half. that and the fact that barnsley raised their game

ericclacton added 22:26 - Sep 29
We had one brilliant team created by Alf Ramsey. Bobby Robson created two brilliant teams, one claimed the fa cup and the other team the uefa cup. George Burley gave us a glimpse of those years, since then there's been nothing, a decade of utter frustration and negativity. Something needs to be done soon or else itfc will end up in the same fixture list as Luton Town, think about it.

Despite what you all say a draw was a good result and definitely a point gained. However we can't ignore the stats which show we were outplayed for most of the game and really didn't deserve the draw. This is what it has come to: celebrating a point against the mighty Barnsley.
