Jewell: Point Gained
Saturday, 29th Sep 2012 18:04

Town boss Paul Jewell praised his side for battling hard during their 1-1 draw at Barnsley, believing it was a point gained rather than two lost.

Jewell said: “I thought in the first half we did OK. We stifled them, we frustrated them, but we didn’t have that quality to go and get the second goal.

“But we battled hard enough and it’s a point gained rather than two lost, even though we were 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go.

“They won 5-0 at Birmingham last week, a fantastic result, they’re a good team who have their way of playing.

“I thought we frustrated them in the first half. We’ve lost three games on the bounce and the confidence of the team isn’t going to be sky high, but over those three games, against Wolves and Middlesbrough, I thought we were by far the better team, we created lots of chances but came away with nothing.

“Today we didn’t play anywhere as well as that but came away with a point. I think they’re unbeaten at home this season. They’ve got a way of playing, the manager’s done a brilliant job here.

“You never say you’re pleased [with a draw] but we dug in, grafted, but we’ve still got to add a bit more quality at key times.”

Jewell was pleased with central defensive pair Luke Chambers and Danny Higginbotham, who were renewing their partnership from the on-loan Stoke man’s spell at Nottingham Forest last season: “I thought they were steady.

“The way we set out to play certainly frustrated Barnsley in the first half. In the second half we started to give daft fouls away and invited a little bit of pressure.

“It was blowing a gale out there and in the second half we were camped in a little bit and at times slashing it clear. But that’s what comes when we’ve lost three games on the bounce and we’re all getting plenty of stick.

“We’ve stuck at it and arguably with Nathan Ellington’s header we might have nicked something, but I think that would have been unfair on Barnsley.”

Jewell confirmed that midfielder Luke Hyam made way due to a back problem, while he was concerned that Guirane N’Daw was at risk of picking up a second yellow card: “Luke got a bang on the back and the referee had a quick word with me about N’Daw at the break and I thought that the last thing we needed was to go down to 10 men.

“It wasn’t ideal, we’re also without two of our front players and, I’m not making excuses, but we were stretched.”

Michael Chopra watched from the stand and his manager says that the frontman could be involved at Brighton on Tuesday: “He just came to have some treatment. He’s not a million miles away, he might have a chance on Tuesday. He came to have some treatment to give him every opportunity to try and be fit for Tuesday.

“Luke was struggling. He didn’t want to come off, but he was honest enough to say he was struggling.”

Barnsley assistant David Flitcroft was much happier with his side after the break: “In the first half I was frustrated with the way we played too slow and too laboured and didn’t really get an angle on the game. We didn’t pass the ball as quickly with the tempo that we know we can.

“In the second half I wasn’t frustrated at all. We regrouped at half-time and the lads did everything that was asked of them.

“They played at the right tempo, hurt them, there were plenty of chances, plenty of goalscoring opportunities, we just didn’t have that lucky break that certainly Chris Dagnall deserved. When he hit the post I thought it was inside the post. I thought his work today deserved a goal.”

I mentioned this on the your report but will do so again. Cannot understand why we matched them with the Diamond, we got killed last year when teams worked this rubbsish formation out and got killed down the wings with the full backs constantly getting doubled up on and pushed back. Anyone remember the Doncaster game. Strange team decisions again by Jewell and think we got away with this today but a point against a form side is more than we have got recently.

Only a point gained if you have gone into the game expecting to get nothing out of it - how much lower can we go if that is all our manager could have hoped to get out of this game?

34% possesion against a mid table championship side tells you everything you need to know about how we are performing at the moment, Its glaringly obvious Jewell has lost the dressing room and the players don't trsut his tactics, formation, team talks etc, this is a worrying sign and needs to be addressed ASAP, I'm afraid PJs time is up, shame because its not nice for anyone to lose their job but he has had his chance and clearly isn't up to it

Personally, I feel this was a good result.
Hopefully this will now be a platform to build on as we face Brighton/Cardiff etc.
We do need to start picking up 3 points to get us out of the relegation zone.

As others have said, a point against Barnsley is hardly a point gained, someone posted earlier that they've never seen so few comments after a match, is it surprising? I wonder if we're just resigned to Jewell being here til the end of the season....... Have supported Town for 30years, never have I felt so fed up, I read in the East Anglian today that Jewell thought we dominated against Wolves...... yes, "dominated!" unbelievable, I don't know what game he was watching..... Night all

Oh my god,a point at Barnsley, yeah agreed,a point is better than a loss, but it's the performances,it's the way we are being outplayed by sides,it's the direction of the club, tactics, substitutions, chopping and changing of the side, week in,week out,the pathetic press conferences of our manager, the sad demise of a manager who really has no idea how to get us out of this awful mess, and still after all of that, and probably more points i have missed, there are still people coming on here in support of the most inept manager the club has ever had.

Over 38 years of supporting a club i love,IPSWICH TOWN FC,and the hurt in our performances is bad enough, but we really are poor, all over, and 2points from the last 18 is simply not acceptable,we are 2nd bottom,we are already in a dog fight,we clearly won't go forward with Paul Jewell,so lads, please, enough is enough, the club needs a change, yes i know it doesn't bring instant success, but we really are on a bad slide,we have no direction at all,yes it's not all Jewell's fault, that i will accept,ME must take some responsibility, giving the most ineffective CEO in Simon Clegg, the results stop at the manager's door.
Sorry,Jewell has to go,and it has to be now,why he has not resigned is beyond belief.

Sorry to disagree with you Mr. Jewell. When you are the team that scores the equalizer it is a point gained. When you are the team that concedes the equalizer it is two points lost.besides, I don't want a manager who is happy for a draw against friggin' Barnsley. I have higher expectations for my club, and so should you. Seen the league table lately?

Dejavu. Seems to be living the end of the Magilton and Keane era. Paul Jewell seems to have lost the plot now. Can't imagine much self confidence left in the dressing room. Year after year the pre season has been badly managed. Come end of September and players in key areas are still being brought in for a month's loan. There is lack of good planning. It is easy to put all the blame on the gaffer but it looks like the club is badly in need of a thorough re organization. Hope for the best.

How long will the Evans blinkers stay on? Will another drubbing on Tuesday night get rid of PJ? I fear not. I'm all for "sticking with the manager " but after nearly three years and facing a fight to stay up is not what I would call progress. I'm afraid I'm going to have to jump on the "Jewell out " bandwagon.

A draw was a reasonable result if viewed in context. Town coming off several consecutive defeats, Barnsley in form having clobbered Birmingham the previous week. Moreover, contrary to what is written in many of the comments here, Barnsley have some very decent players at this level notably Mellis, the two forwards, and Stones. It is arrogant and erroneous in my view to dismiss Barnsley as a weak side. Under their current manager they are 'punching above their weight' and a little more objectivity amongst us fans would not go amiss.

Good news for us, if the Radio commentary was accurate, is that Higginbottom is a leader on the field and may be the solution for a defence in so far as he understand how to marshall those around him.

Our ongoing problem is inability to score goals. Even with Chopra back, I do not see who has the confidence to put the ball in the net. I think our few goals are more likely to come from defenders at corners or set piences like Cresswells yesterday.

The road back to mid table security is going to be very long and hard, regardless od who is the manager. It is clear that the owner and CEO are in any case backing Paul Jewell.

We are now going in to Oct. with the total of 6pts. needing a win and draw to get us in to double figures.. could we do it before the international break ???? I have my doubts with the current management !!!! But I would like to be proved wrong ????
There are better managers on the verge of getting sacked and have more points than us ??

Thats a new excuse...It was very windy! we have not had that one before, i guess Tuesdays excuse will be...................the ball was wet!
Just fed up with PJ, and his incompetance in being a manager, i shudder to think how much we are paying him, and for what?
I would bet that most on here would love his pay cheque and would probably do a better job!
fOR THE SAKE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY PJ JUST PACK YOUR BAGS AND GET UP NORTH!

I went to the game and we were ok in the first half and deserved our lead. It was good to see two up front. Hyam going off was a big blow, then n'daw and Scotland we seem to lose our shape and it became awful to watch and so one sided we couldn't put two passes together. My main concern though is to who he put on ainsley and Ellington. Hands up who thought you would ever see these two wear an Ipswich shirt ever again after last season. Shows us fans our squad is very poor and have no ability at all. Murray and jet( it's in there somewhere) should of come on. We are in deep trouble especially after the next two games. I hope I am wrong!

Yesterday I was grateful for the point halting as it did a run of defeats. After all we hung on against some severe pressure to earn something when we could easily have ended up with nothing. Today though I realise that nothing has changed; the general direction in which we are going is downwards. With Brighton and Cardiff coming up there is a real prospect of null points when pre-season expectations would demand at least 4 points from these games. And therein lies the problem. Expectations have been reduced to mere hopes that we can escape with the odd point or so from games which contenders would win easily. A long cold winter beckons.

I will take any points away from home but we lost six in the last two games. If we take a point at Brighton now that will show improvement.

When you look at the team sheet that has to be just about the worst group of players I can remember in a long, long time. The side is packed with a slow lumbering defence and midfield and no real goal threat. I am not sure what direction we are going in other than downwards. We are not spending money so the only solution is to get a young hungry manager in with young hungry players and build on the academy for the future.

Someone said barnsley had 3 or 4 good players and I say there manager would like to bring in 2 or 3 more thats the differance he can get the best out of the rest of his ordinary squad, for example put 5 past brummies and batter town to get a good draw been 1 down with 15 min to go.Everyone seems to have a shape about them we seem to be all over the place and that is down to the manager who should have left weeks ago when hes hands were tied trying to bring in guys he wanted and we cant even give away any of our rubbish..

Quite a few patronising comments towards Barnsley - not sure why they are a team we "should" beat - teams' statutes at this level can come in waves (though our waves seem to be very slow-moving) and their perception as a little club has nothing to do with anything. Remember, little Barnsley gave us a scare in the play off final a few years ago. From what I read, they are quite ambitious this year, and their manager has stated that now is the time to judge him because he has had the summer to stamp his playing culture (and players) on the club. Sounds exciting doesn't it? Sadly for us, it doesn't really sound like anything PJ has told us. I'd hope that fans would be more patient with a manager if they knew he had a plan. But aside from the long crossfield ball, which we seem to do quite nicely, it's hard to see what our plan is, short or long term.

neillrumsey added 10:05 - Sep 30
We must take some positives from this result as we have at least stopped our run of defeats. It is clear that PJ went out to get a point by the formation and players picked. This side was never going to win you the game. Positive also that Cresswell has made a contribution as if I had been managing he would have been on the bench as his performances this season have been dire. Hopefully this will give him confidence and we see an improvement.
Tricky match at Brighton.....Defeat and PJ will be gone for sure.
