Jewell: Point Gained
Saturday, 29th Sep 2012 18:04

Town boss Paul Jewell praised his side for battling hard during their 1-1 draw at Barnsley, believing it was a point gained rather than two lost.

Jewell said: “I thought in the first half we did OK. We stifled them, we frustrated them, but we didn’t have that quality to go and get the second goal.

“But we battled hard enough and it’s a point gained rather than two lost, even though we were 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go.

“They won 5-0 at Birmingham last week, a fantastic result, they’re a good team who have their way of playing.

“I thought we frustrated them in the first half. We’ve lost three games on the bounce and the confidence of the team isn’t going to be sky high, but over those three games, against Wolves and Middlesbrough, I thought we were by far the better team, we created lots of chances but came away with nothing.

“Today we didn’t play anywhere as well as that but came away with a point. I think they’re unbeaten at home this season. They’ve got a way of playing, the manager’s done a brilliant job here.

“You never say you’re pleased [with a draw] but we dug in, grafted, but we’ve still got to add a bit more quality at key times.”

Jewell was pleased with central defensive pair Luke Chambers and Danny Higginbotham, who were renewing their partnership from the on-loan Stoke man’s spell at Nottingham Forest last season: “I thought they were steady.

“The way we set out to play certainly frustrated Barnsley in the first half. In the second half we started to give daft fouls away and invited a little bit of pressure.

“It was blowing a gale out there and in the second half we were camped in a little bit and at times slashing it clear. But that’s what comes when we’ve lost three games on the bounce and we’re all getting plenty of stick.

“We’ve stuck at it and arguably with Nathan Ellington’s header we might have nicked something, but I think that would have been unfair on Barnsley.”

Jewell confirmed that midfielder Luke Hyam made way due to a back problem, while he was concerned that Guirane N’Daw was at risk of picking up a second yellow card: “Luke got a bang on the back and the referee had a quick word with me about N’Daw at the break and I thought that the last thing we needed was to go down to 10 men.

“It wasn’t ideal, we’re also without two of our front players and, I’m not making excuses, but we were stretched.”

Michael Chopra watched from the stand and his manager says that the frontman could be involved at Brighton on Tuesday: “He just came to have some treatment. He’s not a million miles away, he might have a chance on Tuesday. He came to have some treatment to give him every opportunity to try and be fit for Tuesday.

“Luke was struggling. He didn’t want to come off, but he was honest enough to say he was struggling.”

Barnsley assistant David Flitcroft was much happier with his side after the break: “In the first half I was frustrated with the way we played too slow and too laboured and didn’t really get an angle on the game. We didn’t pass the ball as quickly with the tempo that we know we can.

“In the second half I wasn’t frustrated at all. We regrouped at half-time and the lads did everything that was asked of them.

“They played at the right tempo, hurt them, there were plenty of chances, plenty of goalscoring opportunities, we just didn’t have that lucky break that certainly Chris Dagnall deserved. When he hit the post I thought it was inside the post. I thought his work today deserved a goal.”

We were awful and deserved nothing from the game.

Tactically we were rubbish as well.

Jewell out.

Wow a point against the best team ever. Wake me up when we get three points.

It itself an OK result, but only on the basis we win our home games. One win all season is not good enough. The table this evening makes even more grim reading that it does this morning sadly, as it starts to look difficult to get away from bottom three.

Point gained, correct. We were getting murdered in the second half to an very average Barnsley side. Although the confidence is low at the moment. I said this a couple of weeks ago, after the Boro game I think...i'd give Jewell until after the Brighton game and I think he's gone. Let's hope so.

Maybe looking into the draw beyond face value is a better idea for us as fans, even though the game itself left a lot to be desired, it may inspire the lads now to build ending the losing streak. I still feel ITFC need to have a shake up in the running of the ship, but while things are the way they are, I will be thrilled to see a resurgence more so than PJ being replaced.

This draw may have stopped the rot but the team are just not good enough. Jewell has had plenty of time to put his spin on the team but we have gone backwards again. Time to look for another manager or league 1 here we come.

Er, no Mr Jewell it is not a case of a point gained rather than two lost. Barnsley are a mid-table Championship side not Barcelona. You are supposed to draw the away games and win the home ones. What has happened is no more than your basic job description not a triumph.

Come the end of the season Barnsley wont be in the top half, poor point and we were made look second best for most of the game, the point just keeps stubborn Jewel in a job for anouther couple of days, were a better club than an away point robbed against the likes of Barnsley or have standards dropped that much that we should be greatfull.JEWELL OUT go do strictly or something Jewell cause your no manager

Are we supposed to rejoice because we gained a point? The league table doesnt lie, we are in big trouble.

Marcus- please recruit a new manager please as our current one is clueless!

Brighton away next, should be interesting.

Barnsley may not be the best but a point is still a point regardless who is in charge.

My god how low have we sunk. If he wins a few we're stuck with him. It's a catch 22. He will not be here much longer, he can not turn things around, he would have done by now. Please just do one. So we can have something to believe in again. I have no hope of us doing anything. I'm sure we won't go down we might even finish 15th again! How is this all progress. It's not. People like me who live hundreds of miles away will not go out of our way to watch a team that I believe can be an ok team underperform week in week out.

y do you always give people a minus score when they we were crap, lets face facts we are in trouble and i mean big trouble and i was there and we had about 20% of play and got totally battered for 70 mins ,so if you are a ipswich fan lets stop making excuses and face facts

In itself a point away to Barnsley isn't a bad result and playing badly whilst getting a point can be a sign of a good team. They won 5-0 last week and with moral very poor at the moment, a point is a good result,

But we only seem capable of playing badly. I'm afraid that I am getting bored with PJs excuses. I would say PJ out but am too worried who Simon Clegg and ME will line up next - Megson.

Worst goal difference in the league and one win in 9. That tells the story.

Before all the Jewell lovers start saying its a good result because PJ has financial restraints. How much did it cost Barnsley to put together this really "good team"? Not as much as Jewell has spent!!!!! A good manager makes the difference. Not good enough again, if not for another good GK display it would have been another defeat! JEWELL OUT!!!!!

well done lads after the run we have been on a point was good :-)

If we hadn't just lost three in a row we would be saying that was a good result. Unfortunately we had, so its not a particularly good result, but its not a bad one either especially considering PJ was more or less forced into bringing both Hyam and N'Daw off.

We need to battle hard to avoid defeat on Tuesday at Brighton and look for a win at home to Cardiff next Saturday.

Why do people think we are the best team in that division.
If we don't win they moan about it, face fact we are at best a mid table side, that does not mean I don't want better from Ipswich.
Brighton away next Can't say yes To win

We were very lucky to escape with a point and our goal was a fluke. I cannot see the point of Daryl Murphy; he gave the ball away with poor touches so many times I lost count. Nathan Ellington looks like someone who has just woken up from a coma and discovered he's a professional footballer. He needs to be playing out his days in League One or Two, where he might actually be able to score. The only positive was Higginbotham, who brought some organisation to our defence and leadership in general.Scott Loach does not convince me at all, I'm afraid. Barnsley played some nice stuff and they move the ball quickly, but they aren't world beaters. It's difficult at the moment to pick out three teams who are worse than us in the division - I fear the worse, even if there's a change of management.

Why oh why do we need another striker on loan? Scotland, Ellington, Murray and Murphy all fit. Its no wonder the confidence is low. What a joke PJ is. JEWELL OUT!!!!

Reasonable result - I predicted a draw, by the sounds of it another game of playing better one half than the other which makes me think PJ is not tactically astute or he can't motivate us but saying that he was forced into changes. Interesting to note yet again another central midfield pairing, how many times has he tinkered with the midfield this season already? Tough matches coming up...
