Which loanees/signings do we need? 20:42 - Dec 6 with 4674 viewsDarth_Koont

Not sure exactly what Lambert will be looking for.

Position-wise, I think it's got to be a couple of strikers now — one big one to take over from Roberts and keep him as a healthy backup. And another one with a bit of guile and finishing ability like Waghorn. I'm bored by non-Ipswich football these days and I've no real idea what's available so any suggestions welcome to give me a bit of hope.

But, of course, there'll be other positions too. Anyway, which players do you think could be just about within our range and would add something? And let's say there's a transfer budget of 2-3 million given how dire a position we're in.

A keeper, left back, right back, 2 centre halves, a couple of centre mids, a couple of wingers and two decent strikers would be nice

I can agree with those as, somewhere in all of this, we need a stronger spine to the team.

But do you reckon we're going for five players? I'm thinking it's a list to fill say three positions. I think it'll be a big No. 9, a "versatile attacker with a bit of nous" like a Waghorn or McGoldrick, and a truly dominant centre half (or at least one who's not dominated by a big striker).

It's actually really tricky — there aren't many candidates that leap out when you look at players Lambert has worked with before (seen Charlie Adam mentioned but don't think they were the best of friends) and then you have to wonder how easy it'll be to get people to come.

Think it's the core of the team we need real help in — CB, CM and CF — and probably right-back too. Pennington has let his man go two or three times too many for me in the last fortnight and I'd like another experienced CB in there with Chambers. Alex Pearce at Derby is probably our market level to be honest — has only played one minute this season but I'm struggling for a long list of obvious names.

Actually Moritz Bauer did well for Lambert at Stoke and is very much out of favour under Rowett ... would be a great right-back option on loan although I'd think he will move abroad.

Mile Jedinak could be a good midfield option is Skuse is out long-term, though may be back off to Australia.

Ashley Fletcher is a player waiting to blossom and probably available from Boro, though doesn't use his body anything like a 6ft 1in player should. Return for Daryl Murphy?

Thinking aloud really but think our market is probably going to be from better-off clubs in the Championship.

Good stuff.

Confirms what I've been feeling about Pennington. His best is fantastic (like his cover and sliding tackle the other week) but his worst is pretty bad (clearances and passes that put us in a bad position and a bit too much ball-watching at times when the ball gets close to our box). I reckon an unspectacula, steady Eddie in defence would help all the players around.

Murphy is the obvious call. When the team and Roberts have done best this season, it's almost felt as if Daryl was leading the line and dragging us up the pitch.

But good to have a few more names. Obviously, Lambert has already got to that stage but I wouldn't otherwise have a clue who we might be looking at.

By my count Pennington has left Rodriguez, Paterson and Grabban all run off him in the last two weeks — with very costly results each time. He'll get cuter in time but I'm not convinced at the moment despite the good bits.

It's all a shot in the dark really — I suspect the names we pull in will be of the unspectacular, water-carrying variety overall. But we sort of need that.

Just occurred to me that I wouldn't be against Pennington at right back again so that makes an experienced CB even more relevant.

Like you I don't follow other football enough, but for me we need a RB, CB, CM and a striker.

I know it is fashionable to hammer Spence and all that, but he simply isn't good enough! I think the rest is self explanatory really.

Pennington isn’t capable of playing the full back role in a Lambert team I’m afraid

Right Back :-

James Bree on loan from Villa.

Central midfielder with Skuse out :-

Henri Lansbury, returning from lengthy injury on loan also from Villa

Striker :-

I agree preferably a big striker, but could see us going in for Gary Hooper. Not getting game time T the moment!

Other than him, you’ve got the likes of Sam Gallagher, Connor Wickham; but I feel like these would go to clubs higher in the division than us.

Matt Smith from QPR or Atdhe Nuhiu from Wednesday are also suggestions!

If Knudsen was to leave I can see us going for Joe Bennett from Cardiff (Lambert signed him for Villa).

Lansbury in midfield as he's not getting much game time at Villa at the minute IIRC.

I imagine he'll be wanting a right back, an experienced central midfielder, and two strikers. Probably a target man and another.

The question is, will anyone want to come?

Players such as Henri Lansbury, Gary Hooper etc etc aren't going to come to a relegation battle.

There will be no permanent transfer additions in January that's for sure.

I would have thought negotiations have already started for any 'loan rangers'. Who that will be is anyone's guess.

Watch this space.

If we need firepower (and goals) upfront then that could well be a permanent signing. If there's one area we need to pull out the stops, it's there.

I think it will be very difficult to attract permanent transfers. Perhaps more likely, loan, with a view to making it permanent if everything works out.
