This is why we need more monitoring of near-Earth objects. It was spotted only 26 hours before it passed us by and was 1/5th the distance to the moon (incredibly close in astronomical terms).
If it had hit then the force would have been equivalent to ~5MT.
Even if we spotted it and it was heading right for us, what could we do about it?

If we had spotted it early then loads of stuff.
Deflect it using a gravity tractor, heat one side with a laser so the vapour created shifts the trajectory. With time even a tiny change in angle is usually enough to miss us.
Worst case with one like this it could probably be blown up, that is really desperate stuff though.
