...if there was a slim chance that it would give your kids a bit of hope for the future?

Would you accept that it was morally reprehensible to travel multiple times per year by aircraft for leisure activities?

Or just swap a plane for the train. Plenty of places are easily accessible by rail for a 1 or 2 week holiday. The problem is getting out of the broken UK, but once you’ve done that it’s plain (train?) sailing on the continent.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Don't have kids but haven't had a holiday since 1987 - and I'm still alive

Haven't flown ssince 1994 (a short hop from Orkney to Leeds to avoid 48 hrs of ferry-train-overnight stop-train).

My car is a 4x4, essential in hilly rural area where lanes aren't gritted, but has been pre-loved about 5 x since 2009 & I only do about 1K miles annually these days.

I do think some people could "do without" more,, are too happy to put blinkers on. albeit individual circumstances vary of course.

Turn off the Internet until we have all enery supplied by green sources. That would have a massive impact on the amount of energy being used and therefore reduce the warming of the planet
Trouble is when experts put that forward millons pushback and say no.

We have reached that stage where all options need to be implemented, including turning off the Internet.

I think people would be more inclined if our leaders (in both politics and business) took it a little more seriously. The top billionaires have a carbon footprint larger than France. Oil and gas companies receive over $7trn (yes trillion!) in government subsidies worldwide. State run E&P companies produce over half the world’s fossil fuels. People need to lead from the front, and that’s just not happening.

On the back of that you can understand a nihilistic approach from the populace. “If King Charles is swanning around in private jets, helicopters, fleets of vehicles, numerous energy intensive and inefficient estates - why should I give up my annual trip to Spain…’”

Think not eating meat or dairy should come before that. The energy needed to power the internet can come from green sources, it's not possible to make mass meat and dairy consumption green. Plus the internet is now essential to how we function, people can do without consuming animal products perfectly well.

I’m pretty sure people can manage without TikTok too, but here we are. Broadly you’re right though.

People can do without TikTok but then you know as well as I do that the internet is not just used for TikTok. People could do with cutting down their usage of the internet for trivial nonsense like posting on TWTD but the internet is pretty essential to how society functions now. And with sufficient investment it can be powered without having a negative environmental impact. Meat and dairy remains the big elephant in the room. The science is clear that people need to at least drastically cut down on consumption if not stop altogether, but people aren't willing to do it.

Surely the real elephant in the room is the continuing increase in humans on the planet.

Agree. Take away the internet and the economy goes back to the dark ages. Little things we now take for granted would need a journey to go and do it in person.

That's before you even consider the impact of removing Pornhub.

Can't argue with that.

I'm in the reduce my meat consumption camp, as I like it too much despite the moral and environmental challenges, but more than happy to have meat free days fairly regularly. Plus Mrs Dub is vegan, so through our combined efforts we're doing OK.

To some extent, although if we lived differently that would be less of an issue. It's out levels of consumption and our consumption of particular things that leads to the number of humans being problematic, especially as much of the population growth currently is in countries with lower levels of emissions per capita than more developed countries.

People reducing their consumption is good, it's nowhere near enough at the minute though. I remember reading one report where it said that sustainable red meat consumption would be no more than one serving a week but even less than that would be ideal. Some people still consume meat multiple times a day. We're miles off, sadly.

people need to consume less fossil fuel intense products. that incudes meat. by the terms in which we currently measure such things that implies people in the rich west becoming poorer. for example, as the op suggests, we need to fly less and drive less. alas, in the same way as technical progress won't make it all go away, it's not just about billionaires and oil companies.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
