He'd essentially be saying this is as high as he thinks he can go - taking a step into that bubble means he's happy to spend his career touring the football backwaters

Not in a million years. McKenna isn't daft. He knows full well that if he carries on his current trajectory he could have a top six Premier League job by the time he's 40 or thereabouts. He's not going to chuck that away for a job where you get sacked if you don't beat Celtic.

Kevin Muscat is the current favourite, which gives you a more accurate picture of the level of manager who'll be appointed.

Rodgers, Gerrard and Postecoglou all got top jobs in the Prem as a result of doing well in Scotland. In many ways it's an easy stepping stone.

He wouldn't get a top job in the Prem by doing well here?

Gerrard and Postecoglou had never managed in England before (Gerrard had never managed anywhere), so needed to prove themselves in British football management. Rodgers had already managed Liverpool and almost won the Premier League - Celtic was more of a step down than a stepping stone.

With KMs family being well settled. KM building his own club. Owners listening to his requirements. Support everywhere. I'd be shocked if he binned that all just to play a champions league qualifier.

Yes. Those jobs can lead to prem jobs. But so can taking town up and doing things in the prem itself.

We may see tho if we continue to fail to obtain his first choice targets at this higher level his feelings may change.

Rodgers went to Liverpool after taking Swansea into the PL and keeping them there (very comfortably- 8th if I remember rightly) for one year.

Edit. I meant to add that I think (hope) KM could be on a similar trajectory. If we can hang onto him, he could very well take us up.

12 months ago - I’d worry about that - right now - not so much.

Listen, Rangers is a huge club and European football is a draw.

However doesn’t feel like the job for me that will lure him away given where we are, what we are doing and where we are going.

My last sentence is the key to what I was saying. Doing well in a two horse race is perhaps easier than getting Ipswich promoted and established in the prem. Some might view it as a short cut. However, McKenna's a very smart guy. Just as he has a plan for Ipswich, he will also have a plan for his own career. So early in his career I think he will stay with us, where he has backing, can learn and make mistakes (as he inevitably will) knowing that he has stability of tenure and can continue to build his stock. A wrong move at this stage could set him right back in terms of his standing and reputation. He's undoubtedly ambitious but he'll also be 'trusting the process'.

Anyone who thinks McKenna is going to entertain a job at Rangers is absolutely deluded.
Palace too.

He’s here till the end of the season, period. Even longer if we go up.

It’s the wider picture though isn’t it?

League and 2 cups each season to win, and potentially add to your trophy cabinet/CV.
European football each season - wider audience to show case your talent.
Whilst the league is poor, the exposure you get (which can also work against you given the size of job) is a lot more than you would get at a Championship club.

Coupled by the fact it’s one of the biggest jobs in world football. I know Celtic and Rangers get a rough ride because of the league they’re in, but they’re 2 of the biggest jobs in football, and I don’t quite get why anyone would think players/managers wouldn’t be tempted by them.

I can’t see it, I mean Ross County away is obviously a big draw. Then there’s Europe, the only way Rangers get 3 points there is if the team bus gets caught speeding.

“The championship in England can be a good watch but it’s a terrible level of football.”

Did he actually mean the Scottish premier league?

Jesus most championship sides would give Rangers a game let alone the rest of the division.

Players/managers will of course be tempted by them, and often have been, for the reasons you outline. But I'd be amazed if McKenna was, for the same reason he won't be tempted by a Palace or a Wolves: he'll have a far bigger prize in his sights when the time comes.
