Conservative manifesto 19:18 - Nov 24 with 8108 views | Herbivore | Looks to be less a manifesto and more a couple of slogans endlessly repeated. It's shockingly lacking in detail and substance and offers no real vision for the country.

Conservative manifesto on 19:55 - Nov 24 by homer_123 | I guess they feel...and possibly correctly, that they dont need to do anything. I'm struggling to understand how anyone can vote Tory. Corbyn is far from appeing on face value granted but are people that scared or blind that they'd vote Tory? They called the referendum, to deal with an internal issue...were among enough to consider they knew the outcome. Have then implemented a damaging austerity approach whilst failing to deliver Brexit etc etc. Madness. |
Indeed. I think people genuinely are that scared of Corbyn though. Look at two threads Hampstead started recently; they both bordered on hysteria but the things he was worried about were contradicted by the very links he'd posted in his OP. Where do you even go with that? People are so convinced that Corbyn hates business and hates the country that they're immune to reason and don't even read their own evidence properly.

I think you need to make it clear what you mean by Labour being ineffective before I can answer your question. |
Failing to really nail the Tories when given opportunities. Ian Blackford, as GB says, has been the real opposition leader in Westminster. I have been impressed with him every time he speaks. Corbyn has so much ammunition but seems to have failed to hold the Tories to account. It has all been far too easy for them to dismiss him since he became leader. The polls are not simply down to the press and people being stupid. The Labour front bench does not inspire confidence in many people.

Yes, but he's 'read' a non-biased 'academic' audiobook which explains why socialism simply can't work. By that logic, Adam Smith and Karl Marx's works are basically the same thing, since they both wrote academic texts.

I posted yesterday that it appears that people are threatened and scared of a left socialist Labour gov...as you say...to the point of hysteria. Yet few seemed worried by the Tories move to the right and what that brings. As J2 asked...is this the media? Or something else. There is loads in the Labour manifesto that inherently seems fair, right and reasonable. Sure some stuff is OTT but at least it feels like they are trying redress the social balance and fabric.

What specifically have they not done? They were instrumental in preventing a no deal Brexit. They constantly challenge the Tories about their track record. The narrative given by the press doesn't reflect that of course. Take a look at this: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/general-election-british-uk-media When the press is giving net positive coverage to the Tories whilst demonstrating a huge net negative bias against Labour what do you think they can do to counter that? Where do you even begin with the Tories being the only party receiving positive press coverage after the debacle of the last 9 years? Labour are offering a genuine alternative to the Tories, one that seeks to promote a much fairer society, but many people won't even listen at this point. What more can they do, would you say? For what it's worth I have said and still think that Corbyn's lack of clarity on Brexit has been an issue, though look how much that is played up in comparison to the flip flopping that Johnson and most of his cabinet have done on Brexit. The antisemitism issue has also created a stain but again look at the extent of the coverage in comparison to how racism in the Tory party is reported. That doesn't excuse Labour but more equitable coverage of both parties would lead to quite different public perceptions than exist currently, in my opinion. [Post edited 24 Nov 2019 20:14]

So easy that the right-wing opposition and its media has had to lie and smear on almost every point for four years? And predominantly at a personal level? The battleground and political debate has been everything other than over policy (Conservatives and their record vs. Labour's opposition to that and alternatives).

I agree with that. I think the opposition parties are also partly to blame though. It's Johnson or Corbyn, that much is clear. Swinson, greens, SNP and Corbyn all need to swallow their pride and have a formal pact. Swinson should agree to that in exchange for a binding referendum. Trust the people to make the choice. Instead we have Swinson backing herself into a corner saying she won't put Corbyn in number 10 and she has to stick to that or kill the Lib Dems forever. Where is the anti Tory alliance? They are letting them walk back into government.

Blackford is my MP and I have never been impressed by what he says or how he says it, even when he has replied to my emails. I cannot see any other possibility than voting Lib Dem at the moment but it has to be said that in that televised leader's questions on Friday evening that Corbyn was some way ahead of the other speakers in getting his points across (although Swinson was the only one with the integrity to present answers that actually relate to the problems we face and for that she got the stone cold reaction).

Post match yesterday I spoke to a couple of people in the pub, there was one who was so anti-Corbyn. Smart guy, successful business owner and he thinks buy to let market will see a 15% drop in value and that he would be out of business which seems OTT. He was amazed I wasn’t anti him running a business and thought we’d go out of business too, I don’t see anything in their manifesto to fear. He had a mate who just kept jumping in with communist chat, anti success etc. Another guy was just anti him and couldn’t say why, but is someone who should be a labour voter, certainly shouldn’t be a Tory voter when you look at career etc. But Corbyn has been smeared so much people hate him and can’t articulate why. I picked up a copy of the sun when waiting to get a haircut on Sat. Their review of the leaders debate was mental - Tragic Granpa for Corbyn and a full double page of criticism. Boris was apparently statesman like and able to successfully and skill fully negotiate it all and was the winner of rthe night.

This is a good piece from one journalist about being on the receiving end of "the Corbyn treatment" by the right-wing press. And this was just in one area and over a short newscycle, not anything and everything over 4 years. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/03/land-reform-brute-power-bi This is the level of political "debate" our media has made the norm. And completely disrupts the political process of opposition, unless that "opposition" is centrist and largely won't change anything that powerful people don't want changed.

I'm sure it'd happen, but the Dear Leader has more genuine material they can work with. All they had with Ed Milliband was 'look at what he doe with a bacon sandwich. Oh, and his dad once wrote an essay in sixth form sayinh Capitalism is Bad'. With the Dear Leader you've got everything from hiding in 2016 to Brexit dithering posts 2016 to Diane Abbbot to Iranian Tv to Ken Livingtone and associated dithering to 'I have a letter from Mrs Trellis in North Wales' at PMQs.
