McCarthy: It Was a Robbery
Saturday, 6th Apr 2013 18:26

Boss Mick McCarthy admitted that the Blues’ 1-0 victory at Derby was a smash and grab, claiming he heard sirens at the final whistle.

McCarthy said: “We’ve burgled it. I thought I heard the sirens come at the end and said ‘Shut the door’. I thought the police were coming, there’s a robbery gone on, but heigh-ho.

“That’s the league, scrap it out. It’s not pretty every week, especially at this end of the season, but you need a bit of quality and that’s what Carlos produced.”

McCarthy felt it was a big win, even if his side was fortunate to come out on top: “It’s huge three points.

“Did we deserve them? Not on our performance, they were better than us, but they missed the penalty, or we saved the penalty, whichever way you want to look at it.

“We’ve had to stick at it because we’ve not played particularly well, I thought they did play well, but a bit of quality, a great strike.

“By the way, he’s 34 Carlos, he’s stayed on the pitch, run his socks off and produced that after 93 minutes.

“He scored the winner against Leicester the other week. He needed to chip in more and he’s started to do it.”

While he may not have been impressed with the performance, the Blues boss was one again delighted with his team’s battling qualities as they picked up their fifth clean sheet in a row - and their seventh in eight games - as well as Edwards’s goal: “We worked hard, we fought our corner but we got lucky today. Or was it a good save? The strike at the end wasn’t lucky, it was a great strike.”

He added: “Derby I think have played well, at times. They were certainly the better team in the game. We always managed to fight our corner, but we didn’t play particularly well.

“Being in the position we’re in doesn’t help, but the three points certainly helps. At the end of it, who’s bothered how you play? The history books will just say we came here and we won.”

Rams’ boss Nigel Clough was annoyed that his players let the game slip at the last: “The biggest thing is that we’ve lost a game that we didn’t deserve to. The mentality that we’re trying to instil in those situations, 93 minutes gone, as much as we’d like to win the game you don’t lose it.

“Take your 0-0, take your clean sheet, everyone says ‘Well played, should have won but we didn’t’, but you don’t lose. That’s the biggest disappointment today.”

Clough felt a number of refereeing decisions didn’t go their way, notably when sub Michael Jacobs went to ground under the attentions of Aaron Cresswell on the edge of the area: “I certainly think it was a foul, I’m not sure whether it was in the box as I’ve not seen it back yet.

He also believed Chris Martin’s disallowed goal should have stood: “We know that the goal which was disallowed wasn’t offside, so that’s another major one.

"We didn’t think that was offside. It was a brilliant move and a good goal and we don’t think it was offside.”

The Derby manager also thought referee Eddie Ilderton should have given a freekick for a foul on Kieron Freeman in the passage of play which led to Town’s goal: “Once again we thought it was a blatant foul, nine times out of 10 you get them. It’s usually a culmination of things, a few decisions or whatever, which was the case today.”

Yes it was a bit smash and grab, but we should have beaten Derby at home earlier in the season, having lead 1-0 and they got an injury time winner. So what goes around comes around and things level out. So Derby can moan all they like, but that was us earlier on and they didn't moan then.

As Wicket's said, we've been robbed enough times to enjoy it when luck is in our favour :)

Fantastic result. Don't think i've celebrated a goal like that for a long time! Doesn't that table look so pretty with 9 or 10 teams below us?!

My heart sank on hearing 'a late goal at Portman Road' but that's the way this season's been... No confidence in our goal-scoring for obvious reasons but now completely solid at the back which is great. Should be safe now which is lucky considering who we're playing in the last few games... Can't wait for summer transfer gossip now!

Having been at the game I can say the ref was certainly not giving the decisions in our favour. He had a bad game but the majority of things he got wrong were against us, I think Clough is just looking for excuses

We've played better and lost so a massive three points today - shows we can stick with it all the way to the end (something we couldn't do at the start of the season).

Mick's finally instilled a bit of grit in the team. The ability to scrap out wins is so crucial in our position. I'll worry about playing good football when next season comes around but until then, the points are all that matters

A massive relief and, for once, the other results went in our favour with only Sheffield Wednesday below us winning. Up to 14th now and one win off 9th! McCarthy has done a fantastic job, and there is every reason for optimism next season, which looks like it will be in the Championship. :-)

I think when your have a generally organised defense (like we have) you create your own luck and that's by largely frustrating the opposition - I found under Jewell we largely never received the 'rub of the green' but at no time did I think we had the defense/midfield/attack in any form of organisation or consistency in each area of the pitch which was exploited by other teams.
We must have the best defense in this league by a distance at the moment and it should be interesting in the summer how MM plans to change our midfield and attack and the personnel that he brings in as I fully expect to see us playing in this league next season.

Drury's last game, hardly. Think MM always intended to bring N'Daw on after an hour. N'Daw does seem to be a favourite of his. Drury appears to be somewhat of a lucky charm in the MM mould. Had a good December, out of the side January and February, returns in March and we go on a run again.

Nigel Clough moan moan moan. I see he didn't see it fit to mention the fact his team was gifted a ridiculous penalty and it was scuffed.

Love MM's comments!

Frankly at this point I don't care how we get the points, just that we get them!

Staying in the Championship so that MM can rebuild is the only priority at the moment and we are nearly there.

Nigel Clough - like father like son! But father was much better!.Like jreuser22 when my mobile went "bong" for a goal I automatically thought " Oh no" but we should keep the faith. With this defense we can keep it! COYBs

The form table is looking good:
http://www.twtd.co.uk/league-tables/competition:championship/form/matches:5/type

Five games to go now with three at home...should get at least the three more points that may be needed. Then sign Stearman plus a creative midfielder and get Taylor fully fit.

Probably a robbery, a bit of skullduggery....Carlos you effin beauty. We will remain the Championship's longest tenants. Do we get a loyalty discount?

Dare I say that MM's appointment has always had a 'destiny' feel about it.

From the three points we got at Birmingham to today's smash and grab raid...I thank you MM for restoring my pride in our club.

Well done to all concerned, it will be interesting (if we stay up) as to how MM changes things in pre-season. As things stand, Town would be real contenders next year.

What a magnificent result.

MM has taught us how to win ugly, you have to do that in this league, trying to play like barca wont cut it.

We are hanging on in there and grinding out results. Those vital draws away from home recently at Millwall etc are now paying dividends.

I still think we need 3 more points but have feeling we wont have to wait long to get them.

Very well done boys, hard work and defending well comes through in the end.

7 clean sheets out of 8 is stunning at any level..ok,maybe we're not playing the free flowing football that we all crave in the long run ,but ,Mick & Terry have totally sorted our club out defensively which was badly needed.

If we can now avoid the drop I sense very good things for us next season.
