McCarthy: It Was a Robbery
Saturday, 6th Apr 2013 18:26

Boss Mick McCarthy admitted that the Blues’ 1-0 victory at Derby was a smash and grab, claiming he heard sirens at the final whistle.

McCarthy said: “We’ve burgled it. I thought I heard the sirens come at the end and said ‘Shut the door’. I thought the police were coming, there’s a robbery gone on, but heigh-ho.

“That’s the league, scrap it out. It’s not pretty every week, especially at this end of the season, but you need a bit of quality and that’s what Carlos produced.”

McCarthy felt it was a big win, even if his side was fortunate to come out on top: “It’s huge three points.

“Did we deserve them? Not on our performance, they were better than us, but they missed the penalty, or we saved the penalty, whichever way you want to look at it.

“We’ve had to stick at it because we’ve not played particularly well, I thought they did play well, but a bit of quality, a great strike.

“By the way, he’s 34 Carlos, he’s stayed on the pitch, run his socks off and produced that after 93 minutes.

“He scored the winner against Leicester the other week. He needed to chip in more and he’s started to do it.”

While he may not have been impressed with the performance, the Blues boss was one again delighted with his team’s battling qualities as they picked up their fifth clean sheet in a row - and their seventh in eight games - as well as Edwards’s goal: “We worked hard, we fought our corner but we got lucky today. Or was it a good save? The strike at the end wasn’t lucky, it was a great strike.”

He added: “Derby I think have played well, at times. They were certainly the better team in the game. We always managed to fight our corner, but we didn’t play particularly well.

“Being in the position we’re in doesn’t help, but the three points certainly helps. At the end of it, who’s bothered how you play? The history books will just say we came here and we won.”

Rams’ boss Nigel Clough was annoyed that his players let the game slip at the last: “The biggest thing is that we’ve lost a game that we didn’t deserve to. The mentality that we’re trying to instil in those situations, 93 minutes gone, as much as we’d like to win the game you don’t lose it.

“Take your 0-0, take your clean sheet, everyone says ‘Well played, should have won but we didn’t’, but you don’t lose. That’s the biggest disappointment today.”

Clough felt a number of refereeing decisions didn’t go their way, notably when sub Michael Jacobs went to ground under the attentions of Aaron Cresswell on the edge of the area: “I certainly think it was a foul, I’m not sure whether it was in the box as I’ve not seen it back yet.

He also believed Chris Martin’s disallowed goal should have stood: “We know that the goal which was disallowed wasn’t offside, so that’s another major one.

"We didn’t think that was offside. It was a brilliant move and a good goal and we don’t think it was offside.”

The Derby manager also thought referee Eddie Ilderton should have given a freekick for a foul on Kieron Freeman in the passage of play which led to Town’s goal: “Once again we thought it was a blatant foul, nine times out of 10 you get them. It’s usually a culmination of things, a few decisions or whatever, which was the case today.”

Massive Massive result today . Ronnie Biggs would have been proud of this one. Think MM has already proven his worth in making us a stubborn side defensively. Positive vibes for the future. Creative midfielders a must in the summer and some pacey players .
Special mention to Scott Loach as I for one critisise his kicking and distribution but he's saved us today and deserves much credit.

Just back from Derby with my Grandson, great day out. What a moment at the end! Great feeling, takes me back to the goal against Arsenal at Wembley all those years ago,

Clough is a bigger moaner than Warnock.

I couldn't believe it when Town announced MM as our new manager and stated way back, we wouldn't go down with him and TC at the helm.Give me 0-1 all day long. The club was becoming a laughing stock under Jewel.I remember a Derby fan, wishing Town all the luck in the world on TalkSport, when Jewel had been announced manager. He said Jewel wrecked Derby and couldn't understand his appointment. If we had got rid off him six games earlier, as we should of done, who knows how far MM would of taken us up the league.Managers make teams not players.Keep grinding MM.

MC Mick with nuff respect to Akon & Busta Rhymes -

Call da police for me, tell them it's a case of emergency
Call 'em, call 'em, call da police on me
Tell 'em it's a case of three points for me!

Too old school for you? Well how about this fresh and up to the minute tune...

All together let us sing 'We are top of the form league say we are top of the form league'

It's worth pointing out that when MM took over we had played 13 league matches in which we had gained seven points! MM's 28 league matches have seen us achieve 46 points, an average of 1.64 points per game which betters Crystal Palace's season average of 1.61 points per game and they're currently in fourth place. I think MM has done a fantastic job and perhaps there is cause for genuine optimism for a change.

Well done Town - I danced around the pub when I read about the last-minute winner. But as much as the result, well done Mick who admitted we rather nicked that. So much one-eyed b0llocks in football these days.

Yes, it was rather a jammy result, but that penalty save and that goal deserved the points. When Edwards' shot went in, everyone rose to their feet as one with a huge roar!

Great result- surely almost there now
One goal conceded in 8 games-is this a club record? Fitting testimony to MM and TC if it is.
MM deserves manager of the season! (next year perhaps?).

Great day out today, the boys worked their socks off!
The longer it went on, the more I felt we'd win it!
Have to say that N'Daw and Nouble were noticeable improvements on Drury and Murphy.
N'Daw seems to win every ball, his delivery might not be the best but if he gives it away he quite often gets it back.
Murphy's goal threat is virtually non-existent and for that reason he should be replaced in the summer. Hate to say it but the same goes for Martin - we need more goal threat from our strikers and wingers next season!
Well done Mick, Terry & the Boys - mission almost accomplished!

Another great result and another clean sheet.Cant wait for next season teams who usually get promoted end up winning a lot of games 1-0 just like our current form.

really don't care ..... 3 points won with a last minute goal... how many times have we lost 3 points to a last minute goal.... yes yes yes well done to MM and TC , such a different stronger team mentality now and if they can carry this form onto next season then maybe we will be dreaming again, just maybe!

Great Result. Still got a long way to go but 6 points clear. That is huge at this stage!

Apart from the disallowed goal for offside, the referee gave us nothing the entire game. Yes they should feel annoyed not to get at least a draw, but that's not our problem, take your chances when you get them, like Carlos did! COYB!

What a day £660 on the national then a last minute winner pops up on soccer saturday. Great result boys fighting to the end and if the police do come knocking Mick I'll send you the odd 60 quid towards you fine !!

If you are hard to beat and keep a clean sheet then all you need is one moment of magic or luck to get 3pts. MM set up is to always get something from the game.
Finally we see a 90+ min goal in Town favor!

Almost safe!

'the harder i practice the luckier i get' the great Gary player. Mick has installed a great wok ethic and we should fer no one at the mo. We have rode our luck especially yesterday and against Leeds but like many have said we have all seen Town deserve 3 points but get none.

The belief and workrate is second to non in the division. Lets wrap up safety in the next two games and then we have a solid platform to build on next year. Players want to play for Mick and assuming we stay up i think it could be our best transfer window in 5-8 years.

Wow, how nice to play poorly and then do a mugging in the 93rd minute. How sweet is this victory - we have had it done so many times under the two previous managers, its long overdue we do it to some other team. Great.

Well done MM & TC.
