Jewell: Fans Entitled To Be Annoyed
Monday, 24th Sep 2012 06:00

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that fans are entitled to be annoyed after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, but vowed to fight on. Town remain in 23rd in the Championship after seven games and are without a win at home since March.

Speaking after Saturday’s loss, Jewell said: “I understand the supporters’ frustrations and they’re well entitled to be annoyed. I’m annoyed and I know I’m not very popular at the moment, but what I’ll do is do my best and work as hard as I can and until I’m told different I’ll not run and hide.

“It’s not nice, it’s a horrendous position to be in at the moment, second bottom of the league, but what can I do? I know what I can do and I know what I will do, and that’s keep on doing my job to the best of my ability until I’m told otherwise.

“You’ve got to face up to challenges in your life and it’s a challenge for me, a challenge for my family as well. They’re a part of it. I shall dust myself down and come in [on Sunday] to prepare for the Barnsley game.”

The Liverpudlian admitted that he was unaware that his side had yet to score a goal in the first half in the league this season, while Jason Scotland’s 57th-minute deflected strike against Charlton was the first before the hour mark.

Jewell conceded that results show his team is currently lacking, even if he had been pleased with their two performances prior to Saturday: “I say the team’s not good enough at the moment because we’ve lost three games on the bounce.

“This time last week I was sat there after the Middlesbrough game saying we were the better team and we should have won the game. I said the same on Wednesday.

“I can’t say the same today because I can only see the game as I see it. I’m not a kidder, I know we should have won the game against Middlesbrough and we certainly should have won the game against Wolves. Today we shouldn’t. The team with a bit more edge and a bit more belief in themselves won the match today.

“Ipswich players are no different to any other players,” he added. “If you lose matches, you lose your confidence, that’s what happens.”

He revealed that Town’s much-reduced wage bill is now well below that of many of the clubs they are up against and not far off the figure that Joe Royle had to work with in the years after the club’s administration: “The Wolves wage bill is £22 million and ours is £6 million. Against Wolves, you wouldn’t have spotted £16 million of difference.

“I don’t think you can talk about today’s performance in the same breath as Wolves. I thought against Wolves we missed gilt-edged opportunities.

“But I know that’s not what people want to hear. They only see that we’ve lost three on the bounce, and I understand that.

“I’ll never shirk away from a press conference or a question, but the answer I’m giving you is my truthful answer. I thought against Middlesbrough and against Wolves, we were good.”

While budget limitations played a role in restricting the recruitment of players in the summer, Jewell acknowledged that few bosses ever have the squads they want: “There aren’t many managers who can put the team on the pitch that they want all the time.

“It’s a terrific, wonderful club with great supporters in a really tough league with about 16 or 18 clubs that thing they should be in the Premier League.

“The team on the pitch at the moment isn’t good enough, and I include myself in that. But until I’m told different, I’m not going to run away. I’m confident in my own ability.”

While he has no intention of walking out, he admits he needs a result or two quickly before the decision is taken out of his hands with rumours regarding Harry Redknapp and the Town job continuing to circulate: “We need something at the moment, we need to score a goal in the first hour, and we need to try and get a result to try and build on in the short-term to look long-term.

“We’re in the results business, I know that, and we need a couple of results quickly before we can look long-term.”

"we're second bottom,but what can i do?"

Well, you should be aware that we haven't scored in the first half this season rather than being ignorant of that or pretending to be. Any Jewell sympathisers need to consider that he really isn't trying very hard if he isn't aware of the lack of first half goals but amateur statisticians are. I'm not asking for Allardyce, but still...

Annoyed doesn't come close. What really worries me if that Clegg and ME just don't seem to care about this situation. Keane and PJ were both poor appointments (and I don't just mean with hindsight - many of us said it at the time) but the failure to land signings, the absence of a clearly communicated long term plan, contracts running down etc has not been the Manager's fault but the CE and owner. Come out and tell us where we're going guys please - if we're in financial sh&t ok, we'll deal with it and lower our aspirations just as we did before (though strangely we didf alright because we had a decent Manager!). But just tell us for Pete's sake.

Stop looking at other clubs for reasons,
The problem is your lack of tactical awareness ,your inability to react to game situations
O and the small problem of YOUR defence,

the solution to the problem in the championship is the transfer window.how the hell can you have a pre season with out knowing if certain individuals who hang out signing for a team a fortnight after the season has started, for the sake of a few thousand here or there , and nine times out of ten wont even help your team into the playoffs!thetransfer window needs to close at least a fortnight before the season starts.how the hell are you supposed to organize anything.a team can still be experimenting well into the season with positons ect...thats my thoughts anyway.stop transfers before the start of the season and i would gladly bet anyone that you wouldnt see all this dithering about signing for teams and hanging things out the buggering off somewhere else.the situation is unfair and really needs to be looked at.too many clubs in the championship are being held to ransom.this division is such a lottery.

"It's not nice, it's a horrendous position to be in at the moment, second bottom of the league, but what can I do?" [sic]

So the manager doesn't know what to do; he is confirming that he doesn't know what he can do????????

Is it just me that noticed that one liner??? This is hilarious, or rather it would be if it weren't so serious. Talent is out there - Norwich spotted it albeit it took a disaterous FIRST GAME with Gunn in charge; Southampton have also got a bloke who can spend wisely and create/engender real commitment from their players; Ian Holloway can/does do it; Malky Mackay has done/is doing it.......

We get a bloke who signs Bullard (?), JET (??), Chopra (£££???) - Jewell should be sat on a couch next to Peter Reid pretendiing that he knows enough to be a pundit.

Let's re-state our aim as a 5yr plan starting with some young talent behind the scenes and on the pitch - Financial Fair Play will kick in soon anyway so lets get ahead......

5.15 and hes still here.
If Evans doesnt get rid of him by the end of the day then im afraid he either doesnt care about the club or he's being negligent in his duties as owner.which one is it Marcus?

No news is bad news... I can't help thinking the board just won't sack him after 7 games especially with the new recruitments, if Barnsley thump us (can't see it happening) then I feel something might happen.

This news isn't necessarily all bad, because ME had replacements all but in the job before he dispatched of Magilton and Keane; Also Harry hasn't said anything to the press yet, which is unlike him. I feel plans are in motion, but no decisive action will be made until all of the puzzle pieces are in place, atleast in Evans' eyes

I`m annoyed with you Jewel, that you haven`t got the back bone to leave the club.
In my books your just a chancer who ran out of luck, the warning too ME should of been his record at Derby .
I have been supporting Town since 1965 and the club at present is rocking on its knees !

You have to wonder what our owner's long term plan is really..does he know much about football?..who's advising him?..surely not Clegg.

I don't want him employing another of his mates when the current clueless bunch are gone..he needs advise from a proper Town supporter/ex-player..i'd much rather have someone like George Burley or Mick Mills here as our CEO.

Annoyed, riled, very frustrated at the huge lack of leadership from M E, Clegg, Jewell & to some extent the players on match days. Come on Evans, lets have a statement from YOU. We know what you look like as your picture has appeared on websites so why be so coy. Let us long suffering true fans know what the bloody hell is going on, or are you just using our club as some kind of advertising oppertunity. It is time for action.

i hate whats happened to football, the mark halsey incident is disgraceful the guy has made a mistake and football 'fans' have been abusing him all week, and this is the case with all referees they all get abused, as for 'fans' they call for managers head at every club these days and hurl abuse at them constantly. Why would anybody want to be a manager these days or a referee for that matter, it is an absolute joke. As for paul jewell, it may be time for a new manager yes but that does not call for all the abuse hurled at him when he is trying his best

thebeat added 19:33 - Sep 24
townlad21 hes not getting abuse.he's being asked to do whats best for our club and leave.he has taken us to new lows and by refusing to quit he is literally rubbing our noses in it.
