Jewell: Fans Entitled To Be Annoyed
Monday, 24th Sep 2012 06:00

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that fans are entitled to be annoyed after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, but vowed to fight on. Town remain in 23rd in the Championship after seven games and are without a win at home since March.

Speaking after Saturday’s loss, Jewell said: “I understand the supporters’ frustrations and they’re well entitled to be annoyed. I’m annoyed and I know I’m not very popular at the moment, but what I’ll do is do my best and work as hard as I can and until I’m told different I’ll not run and hide.

“It’s not nice, it’s a horrendous position to be in at the moment, second bottom of the league, but what can I do? I know what I can do and I know what I will do, and that’s keep on doing my job to the best of my ability until I’m told otherwise.

“You’ve got to face up to challenges in your life and it’s a challenge for me, a challenge for my family as well. They’re a part of it. I shall dust myself down and come in [on Sunday] to prepare for the Barnsley game.”

The Liverpudlian admitted that he was unaware that his side had yet to score a goal in the first half in the league this season, while Jason Scotland’s 57th-minute deflected strike against Charlton was the first before the hour mark.

Jewell conceded that results show his team is currently lacking, even if he had been pleased with their two performances prior to Saturday: “I say the team’s not good enough at the moment because we’ve lost three games on the bounce.

“This time last week I was sat there after the Middlesbrough game saying we were the better team and we should have won the game. I said the same on Wednesday.

“I can’t say the same today because I can only see the game as I see it. I’m not a kidder, I know we should have won the game against Middlesbrough and we certainly should have won the game against Wolves. Today we shouldn’t. The team with a bit more edge and a bit more belief in themselves won the match today.

“Ipswich players are no different to any other players,” he added. “If you lose matches, you lose your confidence, that’s what happens.”

He revealed that Town’s much-reduced wage bill is now well below that of many of the clubs they are up against and not far off the figure that Joe Royle had to work with in the years after the club’s administration: “The Wolves wage bill is £22 million and ours is £6 million. Against Wolves, you wouldn’t have spotted £16 million of difference.

“I don’t think you can talk about today’s performance in the same breath as Wolves. I thought against Wolves we missed gilt-edged opportunities.

“But I know that’s not what people want to hear. They only see that we’ve lost three on the bounce, and I understand that.

“I’ll never shirk away from a press conference or a question, but the answer I’m giving you is my truthful answer. I thought against Middlesbrough and against Wolves, we were good.”

While budget limitations played a role in restricting the recruitment of players in the summer, Jewell acknowledged that few bosses ever have the squads they want: “There aren’t many managers who can put the team on the pitch that they want all the time.

“It’s a terrific, wonderful club with great supporters in a really tough league with about 16 or 18 clubs that thing they should be in the Premier League.

“The team on the pitch at the moment isn’t good enough, and I include myself in that. But until I’m told different, I’m not going to run away. I’m confident in my own ability.”

While he has no intention of walking out, he admits he needs a result or two quickly before the decision is taken out of his hands with rumours regarding Harry Redknapp and the Town job continuing to circulate: “We need something at the moment, we need to score a goal in the first hour, and we need to try and get a result to try and build on in the short-term to look long-term.

“We’re in the results business, I know that, and we need a couple of results quickly before we can look long-term.”

TownLad21 a superb post, I really couldnt put it better myself.

Ok pj isnt top of my Xmas card list right now, yet again he's panicked and brought loan players in when he said he wouldnt and now (same as last year I think) he doesnt know what his best team/formation is.

However, that does not call for the level of abuse he's had on here. At least he has had the balls to say he's got it wrong which is much more honest than a lot of managers do or say.

Lets hope he can turn things round starting on saturday, ok I'm not holding out much hope either but that is what being a supporter is all about.

Paul Jewell will not go. He is hanging on for his pay off. Just sack him, this is not doing anybody any favours. We would be more likely to win the next game with No manager at all. Then the players would have nobody to cover just how inept they are as well and take the flak for them. Stick JET amd Chopra on the transfer list as well please. Loan them out to where they belong, league two.

I agree no one in football or any other walk of life should never have to suffer personal abuse. During the 70s and 80s because of the hooligan problem all fans were treated like cattle penned in etc. Today i feel we are treated like idiots turn up pay yer money sit in your seat and shut up. Win lose or draw dont complain and by the way you are only spectators not pro footballers so you dont understand the game. PLEASE COME AGAIN
better still committ to a season ticket. To the previous post about getting behind the team i would imagine that every member on this site wants the best for Ipswich Town FC. They cant vent their feelings at the ground thats not PC so im afraid this is the only place left. Being frustrated at the lack of entertainment at Portman road these days and saying so in my book dosent make anyone a less of a supporter than someone who blindly cheers on a constant lack of effort and failure.

Agree thebeat...can't say i've seen that much "abuse" of Jewell..tbh I think he can count himself lucky that it's not a lot worse considering some of the results we've had to put up with over the last 20 months:

7-1 peterbro
6- 1 blackpool,
5-1 norwich,
a few 4-1's not to mention losing 7 in a row at the end of last year!

Agreed not really sure he's being verbally abused, lot's of obvious calls for him to go (sometimes naughtier than that) but there's been nothing personal that I have read. What I have heard as well He seems to have got nowhere near that amount of boo's in the stadium after the game and during as some other managers under pressure (but then again PR is a library so not too much noise please).
I doubt very much he reads websites related to ITFC, he should be far too busy at the moment.

bob7881 & Lighningboy, those are fair comments and without wanting to sound patronising, very well put.

I particularly agree with Bob7881 that supporters are mugged off to a certain extent were we turn up, pay £35 for a ticket unless season ticket holder, £10 for a beer and awful burgar (especially as the club have now gone in house for catering) and watch a truly awful performance 9 times out of 10 and just expected to put up with it, I totally agree its unacceptable.
However what angers me is people coming on here (not you guys) and just saying pj is useless and lets get rid of him for Redknapp as it doesnt offer a solution, just pie in the sky.

I think somthing is fundamentally wrong at the club as we have gone absolutely nowhere in the last 3-4 years despite some investment.

Do I know exactly what that is and how to resolve it? I'm really not sure I think the lack of real leadership from ME/Clegg possibly could be part of the problem. Of course pj is part of the problem, but it is his fault entirely, not in my opinion.

If Redknapp came in would he suddenly turn things around, possibly, possibly not.

Probably like a lot of fans we all WANTED to wake up on Monday to see the headline "......press conference announced at Ipswich Town for 2pm....." but we all KNEW it wasn't going to happen. WE ALL WANT TO BE PROVED WRONG but can we take yet another defeat before something happens ? This time the Barnsley game 1 year on could this Saturday be the time PJ finishes that resignation letter he ripped up after last years fixture. I will reblog an apology if we win but all the signs are heading toward humiliation for a great club such as our's. Mr Clegg and Mr Evans - please pay Paul off and let's start again before our 11th season in the 2nd tier ends in relegation.

Watching Blackpool v Huddersfield on sky, both teams look light years ahead of us. So sad. Both playing with width, pace and no little skill.

thebeat, my point precisely, steve kean is on the verge of the sack with blackburn 2nd in the league, despite being employed by people who seem to know as much about football as my 2 year old.

Football has officially gone mad.

well he aint going anywhere for a bit so buckle up lads another game not knowing who is going to miss an open goal and panicking at every counter attack a team have.

To be honest we have played much better footy under Jelwell than keane but results have been poor and to ship the goals we have over the last season and a bit are nothing short of criminal. It is time for a change in my opinion but have been proved wrong before and do not think there is going to be a change for a few games yet alas. Now was the time to act but the club didn't so makes me think that he will be given at least till November probably, by which time we will be well out of the scene for play offs. Would be nice to be proved wrong and for someone to kin play Luke Hyam.

warbeat78 couldnt agree with you more mate and agree some players need to seriously look in the mirror, Martin, JET to name 2 in my view.

Martin to me looks like he's got the hump since he was put back out on the wing.

Talbs77 good points you raise i posted recently posted it began with Sheepshanks some then defended him, well if he done such a good job why did we get in such a mess and had to sell to Evans. I agree its not all Jewells fault. Its easy with hindsight to say that his appointment was wrong but i firmly believe he was wrong from day one. I dont think Redknapp fits well with Town Curbishly been out of the game too long same with Hoddle even Billy Davis's stock has gone down, i can go on and i admit i havent got the answer i really wish i had. There must a manager out there who will fit well with Town and bring back good times and move the club forward its up to Evans to find him or employ someone who can not clegg hes not a football man.

Heard ME has pledged his support for PJ (in EADT?), if so let's remember there have been a few upturns before under PJ!. Higginsbottom will hopefully be an improvement (and i still think PJ may have another CB in mind for a 93 day loan from October). Most sides in the division currently aren't doing much better than us (and their fans are no doubt calling for their managers to go) so let's hang in there, can't believe we won't start overtaking some of the other poor sides sooner rather than later.

Bob7881 great last post mate, I agree with all your points entirely, Sheepshanks did well initially but ultimately nearly bankrupted the club due to itv digital going belly up, he effectively gambled on getting that money which the club never actually received.

I also agree the usual candidates (Redknapp/Curbishly etc) are not the answer.

History shows us that our success has always been when we have got in hungry young managers going right back to Ramsey,Robson and Burley.

Your bang on that its Clegg/ME job to go out there and find the next bright young manager out there. Ultimately they have to take responsibility and going for the fashionable men hasnt worked, Keane being a prime example of pure disaster.

Bob7881 added 21:46 - Sep 24
You are joking when will you learn we are going backwards the stats are there for all to see. The Last decent manager we had was big Joe forced to sell players because of Sheepshanks mismanagement but still done a good job. As for the rest its an insult to the likes of Sir Alex to call them football team managers.
