Jewell: Fans Entitled To Be Annoyed
Monday, 24th Sep 2012 06:00

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that fans are entitled to be annoyed after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, but vowed to fight on. Town remain in 23rd in the Championship after seven games and are without a win at home since March.

Speaking after Saturday’s loss, Jewell said: “I understand the supporters’ frustrations and they’re well entitled to be annoyed. I’m annoyed and I know I’m not very popular at the moment, but what I’ll do is do my best and work as hard as I can and until I’m told different I’ll not run and hide.

“It’s not nice, it’s a horrendous position to be in at the moment, second bottom of the league, but what can I do? I know what I can do and I know what I will do, and that’s keep on doing my job to the best of my ability until I’m told otherwise.

“You’ve got to face up to challenges in your life and it’s a challenge for me, a challenge for my family as well. They’re a part of it. I shall dust myself down and come in [on Sunday] to prepare for the Barnsley game.”

The Liverpudlian admitted that he was unaware that his side had yet to score a goal in the first half in the league this season, while Jason Scotland’s 57th-minute deflected strike against Charlton was the first before the hour mark.

Jewell conceded that results show his team is currently lacking, even if he had been pleased with their two performances prior to Saturday: “I say the team’s not good enough at the moment because we’ve lost three games on the bounce.

“This time last week I was sat there after the Middlesbrough game saying we were the better team and we should have won the game. I said the same on Wednesday.

“I can’t say the same today because I can only see the game as I see it. I’m not a kidder, I know we should have won the game against Middlesbrough and we certainly should have won the game against Wolves. Today we shouldn’t. The team with a bit more edge and a bit more belief in themselves won the match today.

“Ipswich players are no different to any other players,” he added. “If you lose matches, you lose your confidence, that’s what happens.”

He revealed that Town’s much-reduced wage bill is now well below that of many of the clubs they are up against and not far off the figure that Joe Royle had to work with in the years after the club’s administration: “The Wolves wage bill is £22 million and ours is £6 million. Against Wolves, you wouldn’t have spotted £16 million of difference.

“I don’t think you can talk about today’s performance in the same breath as Wolves. I thought against Wolves we missed gilt-edged opportunities.

“But I know that’s not what people want to hear. They only see that we’ve lost three on the bounce, and I understand that.

“I’ll never shirk away from a press conference or a question, but the answer I’m giving you is my truthful answer. I thought against Middlesbrough and against Wolves, we were good.”

While budget limitations played a role in restricting the recruitment of players in the summer, Jewell acknowledged that few bosses ever have the squads they want: “There aren’t many managers who can put the team on the pitch that they want all the time.

“It’s a terrific, wonderful club with great supporters in a really tough league with about 16 or 18 clubs that thing they should be in the Premier League.

“The team on the pitch at the moment isn’t good enough, and I include myself in that. But until I’m told different, I’m not going to run away. I’m confident in my own ability.”

While he has no intention of walking out, he admits he needs a result or two quickly before the decision is taken out of his hands with rumours regarding Harry Redknapp and the Town job continuing to circulate: “We need something at the moment, we need to score a goal in the first hour, and we need to try and get a result to try and build on in the short-term to look long-term.

“We’re in the results business, I know that, and we need a couple of results quickly before we can look long-term.”

Pointing out that we are operating on a £6m wage budget is relevent, however, it does somewhat overlook the fact that ME must be trying to claw back some of losses occured by paying the Bowyers, Bullards, Leadbitters etc who PJ brought here at great expense, but hugely underperformed.

I also note a return of my least favourate footy phrase 'results business' - perhaps if returned to 'entertainment' a few more might consider parting with £30+ and giving up thier Saturday afternoon - just a thought.

Abbott Ale this week I think....

What more can be said about the total shambles down at our club, there is only one person who can deal with the problems! that is Mr Evans who make no mistake about this he saved this club, from a far worse fate than being in the bottom two of the Championship! It's his club, his decisions for what is to come in the future of Ipswich Town.

I hate it when Jewell keeps coming out with all these comments. We don't want to hear things such as 'if you lose matches, you lose confidence thats what happens', and '16 to 18 teams think they can get to the Premier League' all of this is no coinsidence PJ, Your the manager and you have to instill the confidence in the players. If you want to be a pundit, quit us and do that. He has to be realistic but why say that? has he given up on taking this club anywhere? He cant come out every day with a new side issue and just blame it on the nature of football. The problems were facing are for you to sort it out Paul and if you cant muster up any answers then you may aswell leave now, I'll read one of my retro football books if I want to understand something about football.

bluedan. we did play reasonably well against wolves, as we did boro, & should have won both games. was only the inability to score that cost us the points in those mayches. against that, saturdays performance was the worst ive seen a town team play for a while now, and much was due to pjs tactics & him moving players positionally too much, leaving them not knowing what they supposed to be doing. oh, and planetblue? weve been playing 4-4-2 for the last 3 matches.

As football is today, there is no coming back from this situation for a manager. The club is tredding water untill he is gone.He knows it, the players know it,the staff know it,For the sake of us all Mr Evans just get it over as painlessly as possible, please let us move on hopefully with an up and coming youngish manager who knows the lower leagues well.

So the only thing to come out of the club since Saturday still is the the after match comments.... No news confrence?? No support from the board!! Surely the lack of noise is concerning aswell?

Ready for the dislikes but here goes.
I am not going to pay to watch them until he goes. I have supported them for over 30 years been a season ticket holder, been to countless away games and Wembley, I've paid this last week nearly £60 to watch this rubbish (money I can't really afford but you find because you love this club). If I paid that money to watch one an Evan's event and were un entertained I would demand my money back.

isnt it strange football managers and politicions , they ALL have same ,excuses and answers when they are wrong and f;ck up ., They ''will learn from mistakes '' and ''can turn things around'',[they rarely if ever do ]and its NEVER THEIR FAULT .That then leads me to worry about the next thing Jewell may become Prime Minister with his cridentials . COME ON ''ARRY ',feed the Bulldog and get ya self down Portman Rd .Lets see the Town light up . COYB

Jewell stating the obvious as normal. And his excuses are just getting boring. Was hoping he would be gone by now, fingers crossed he is gone before Barnsley. Unbelievable the amount of dross we have had to put up with in the last few years. Some of the worst results in the last few years have come under Jewell, peterborough 7-1 and norwich 1-5, blackpool 6-0. All woeful defensive performances.

A earlier post mentioned.... Quote
Do the hone table thing and walk now as he has clearly lost the dressing room.. ???

well if they have "dressing rooms" they are.... JUST TOO PAMPERED
and No Wonder we are seeing such soft displays on the pitch

Install a Portakabin with No Hot running water to shower by, and so Toughen these Namby-Pamby's players up a notch...

Also training is switched to Nr Woodbridge on the site of DOG BORSTAL @ 6am and Roy Keane can exercise his dogs and be entertained as well before going home for his bowl of Ready Brek.... :-)

Time is up for Jewell. Next Town Manager love to see an experienced football, coach, a man who Captained England in the world cup finals, with the right team beside him this ex Ipswich icon could send us into the premiership remember Burley he did it! Lets see some of the old Ipswich spirit and start filling Portman Road again.

This situation is not going to go away. PJ is currently a man with no future. The team is in a cacooned limbo merely waiting for whatever action the executive choose to take. Doing nothing is not an option. This is not business as usual. Instead of giving us an impression of Nero fiddling while Rome burns, ME must show decisive leadership by either publicly backing PJ unequivocally (perhaps by even extending his contract now), or by putting the guy out of his misery and sacking him. Without decisive action now we cannot move on. At this moment the games at Barnsley and Brighton, and the Sky game against Cardiff are all potential car crashes. None of us can take much more of this.

Ok I want PJ to go, but I don't totally blame him, we cant sign anyone and lets face it we haven't for a few years now. So maybe its clegg we should be looking at? Saying all that Royle did a much better and we sold everyone who we got an offer for.

This is where I wind up a lot of people. There is no guarantee that anyone else would get better results with the current squad because too many of the players look good on their day but don't produce the goods on a consistent basis. Paul Jewell had the guts to admit that it was a mistake to go for a quick fix with fading over-thirties from the Premiership and now the club is planning long-term. Unlike last season, most of the performances have been better than the results suggest. It's true that the squad is thin but while Jewell identifies tranfer targets, someone else negotiates terms with potential signings. For me Jewell should stay, and I have not been smoking anything peculiar.

I was at the blackburn , huddersfield, and charlton games and my angle on the team performances is there doesn't seem to be any system to the play or pattern. Why has jewell played murphy so much since he came back? A very poor selection IMO, i think he should be on the bench, carson and I'd like to see hyam start too. If there's no money to spend and he's struggled to bring in many new faces surely he should give the clubs youngsters more games, it is the only way forward. Young players are keen and hungry to get on in the game. This has to be one of the managers biggest faillings so far. Hence the situation he finds himself in.

Have tried hard not to comment this weekend so far.I cannot believe at this stage we have no comment from Clegg .Jewell has to front everything up , we need strong leadership now , that must come from Clegg . Stop the players tweeting , fine them if they get caught in slagging tweets with supporters .Make a statement regarding Jewell either help him or release him .Issue a statement about the dire pricing policy for games £31.50 to watch Charlton is a mistake , get rid of the ABC grades charge the same each game. I suggest £25 maximum . Is Clegg still at the club a Chief Executive is supposed to lead where is the leadership ? I now believe Jewell should go , his tactical changes on the field on saturday were poor the players looked lost . Thanks Paul for your efforts and comments some of which i have really enjoyed its a pity our CEO did not help you more .
