Jewell: Fans Entitled To Be Annoyed
Monday, 24th Sep 2012 06:00

Boss Paul Jewell admitted that fans are entitled to be annoyed after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, but vowed to fight on. Town remain in 23rd in the Championship after seven games and are without a win at home since March.

Speaking after Saturday’s loss, Jewell said: “I understand the supporters’ frustrations and they’re well entitled to be annoyed. I’m annoyed and I know I’m not very popular at the moment, but what I’ll do is do my best and work as hard as I can and until I’m told different I’ll not run and hide.

“It’s not nice, it’s a horrendous position to be in at the moment, second bottom of the league, but what can I do? I know what I can do and I know what I will do, and that’s keep on doing my job to the best of my ability until I’m told otherwise.

“You’ve got to face up to challenges in your life and it’s a challenge for me, a challenge for my family as well. They’re a part of it. I shall dust myself down and come in [on Sunday] to prepare for the Barnsley game.”

The Liverpudlian admitted that he was unaware that his side had yet to score a goal in the first half in the league this season, while Jason Scotland’s 57th-minute deflected strike against Charlton was the first before the hour mark.

Jewell conceded that results show his team is currently lacking, even if he had been pleased with their two performances prior to Saturday: “I say the team’s not good enough at the moment because we’ve lost three games on the bounce.

“This time last week I was sat there after the Middlesbrough game saying we were the better team and we should have won the game. I said the same on Wednesday.

“I can’t say the same today because I can only see the game as I see it. I’m not a kidder, I know we should have won the game against Middlesbrough and we certainly should have won the game against Wolves. Today we shouldn’t. The team with a bit more edge and a bit more belief in themselves won the match today.

“Ipswich players are no different to any other players,” he added. “If you lose matches, you lose your confidence, that’s what happens.”

He revealed that Town’s much-reduced wage bill is now well below that of many of the clubs they are up against and not far off the figure that Joe Royle had to work with in the years after the club’s administration: “The Wolves wage bill is £22 million and ours is £6 million. Against Wolves, you wouldn’t have spotted £16 million of difference.

“I don’t think you can talk about today’s performance in the same breath as Wolves. I thought against Wolves we missed gilt-edged opportunities.

“But I know that’s not what people want to hear. They only see that we’ve lost three on the bounce, and I understand that.

“I’ll never shirk away from a press conference or a question, but the answer I’m giving you is my truthful answer. I thought against Middlesbrough and against Wolves, we were good.”

While budget limitations played a role in restricting the recruitment of players in the summer, Jewell acknowledged that few bosses ever have the squads they want: “There aren’t many managers who can put the team on the pitch that they want all the time.

“It’s a terrific, wonderful club with great supporters in a really tough league with about 16 or 18 clubs that thing they should be in the Premier League.

“The team on the pitch at the moment isn’t good enough, and I include myself in that. But until I’m told different, I’m not going to run away. I’m confident in my own ability.”

While he has no intention of walking out, he admits he needs a result or two quickly before the decision is taken out of his hands with rumours regarding Harry Redknapp and the Town job continuing to circulate: “We need something at the moment, we need to score a goal in the first hour, and we need to try and get a result to try and build on in the short-term to look long-term.

“We’re in the results business, I know that, and we need a couple of results quickly before we can look long-term.”

I fail to see what waiting one or two games is going to make. The present group of players are just not good enough, on Saturday Charlton who are only an average team of players were far better than us because they played as a team. They also had a big Centre forward in Fuller who we could have signed who controlled our defence and a big Centre half who controlled our attack. PJ said in the summer these postions were a priority to strengthen, nothing has been done we still make the same mistakes every game.
Please Mr Evans make a statement to tell the supporters which direction this club is going. You own the club but as supporters we have a right to know.

I think I realise what's been going on re: PJ's comments recently.

He's been given a new laptop with "Microsoft Football Manager Word Processor V5.2" installed to write his post-match analysis on and forgotten to turn off the "Spiel Check" button.

When he writes, "The bl**dy supporters haven't got a clue. All they do is moan about the results week in, week out. So, we're losing games, so what? I couldn't give a monkey's! Mr Evans and Mr Clegg have a budget to work within... about the same budget most people have for their Tesco shopping each week, hence, I'm working with a Tesco Value Team! I'm a popular guy... I'm "Mr Popular" with the players. Who cares what the fans think? I'll keep turning up to training, get it over with and send out a team with no confidence, no threat and no defensive cover and still pick up my wages every week. They won't sack me 'cos they'll just have to pay me off. Same sh*t, different day! Now, where's that travel brochure...?"

It comes out as...

"I understand the supporters' frustrations and they're well entitled to be annoyed. I'm annoyed and I know I'm not very popular at the moment, but what I'll do is do my best and work as hard as I can and until I'm told different I'll not run and hide.

That's my theory, anyway!

In all seriousness though, the reason we're not good enough at the moment isn't all down to one man. Simply replacing PJ with another manager won't cure all the club's ills. Budget constraints are holding up transfer/wage negotiations and scuppering deals for new players before they get off the ground. That decision rests with ME and SC.

The three of them combined, ME, SC and PJ have got to sit down and sort this mess out, one way or another, before it descends into total farce. They mustn't be afraid to amend the current transfer policy/wage budget slightly to accommodate the accumulation of players who can drag us out of the mire.

I live in hope...

BillBlue agree with you mate the only highlight of last season was when hyam and drury seemed to bring a bit of energy to the midfield i'd personally keep luongo in there with them for his passing ability, lee martin to the left jet to the right and murphy down the middle instead of chops at the moment just to hold it up a bit more!!

I would like to challenge every 'Jewell Out' poster to also name the person they want to take over as manager.

Steve Cotterill or Billy Davies for 2 string theory.
For those who say PJ has not been able to bring in players, Loach(decent admittedly), cresswell, chambers, Drury, Murphy, Luongo, JET, there is 7 who played on saturday(also N'Daw , Andrews , Sonko,Bullard ,Collins,Stockdale,Bowyeretc ,etc, etcthe list goes on) so he hasn't had his hands fully tied.He has just hasn't brought in the RIGHT players and then has mis managed them.

When Keane was in trouble didn't Evans support him in public, then sack him and get Jewell in the next day as he had been negotiation with Jewell in private, I hope history is about to repeat itself

People on here saying it's the players, just look at leadbitter and his performance for Boro there have scored more goals this season from his corners than we have from open play and look at how Delaney is doing at palace.now ask yourself is it the players or is it the manager.

Can't believe he's still here?
How bad does the situation have to get before someone takes responsibility for this mess.Surely its clear that under Jewellosaurus we are going in one direction only?
Please ME give us fans some hope back and relieve us of one of the worst managers i can remember in over 20 years of supporting the club.

If it was any other club Jewell would have been given his marching orders last season ,this season is a total sham with the whole team under preforming,Clegg and Evans dont seem to be saying much lately which can only mean one thing,I appeal to them to this time give us a proper manager,we havent had one since George Burley who brought great success to this club.

Working to a same budget as Joe Royle?! Joe Royle has us in the top 6 nearly the whole time he was in charge! By the way you don't ever 'deserve' to win a football match when you're 3 goals away from winning a game like we were against 'Boro and Wolves so that's a ridiculous comment! He's a broken man who's waiting to be sacked, put him out his misery Evans.

PJ must go, but stop knocking Marcus Evans, without him we would not have a club. If he walked away where would we be? Worse off than Portsmouth

Phew, well thats a relief! I have been given the nod by PJ to be annoyed? It's never been an easy job being a town fan in Norfolk, but it looks like we could be two divisions apart?
My club is in decline, the team on the pitch, the team off the pitch its seems to be an ever downwards cycle. I have family in Spain who say they want to go to an english football match to experience the atmosphere, after years of "talking it up" they are coming to visit in march, how many of us be will be left at Portman Road to make an atmosphere? Marcus we need wholesale change, clegg out and jewell out. Get the away fans shifted next to the Bobby Robson stand. Im not looking for a quick fix but i want gradual improvement, not the gradual decline we have been given for the last five years!

Evans , Clegg , Jewell , Keane , you have taken a football club with great tradition and history and turned it into a the laughing stock of the league, but why should you care Evans will dissapear with his £72million or whatever it is, Clegg will take a position at the marcus evans group somewhere and jewell will probably appear on a seat next to keane on i t v. The worse part is that for all the shouting and screaming the jumping up and down and the posts on websites we the fans will change nothing because we are not being listened to, I sometimes wonder wether Evans knows the team has supporters.

Funny how Pj doesnt read the papers or internet, is this a case of stick my head in the sand and it will all go away.

ME please do something now and not let this drag on until after January again and we have nothing left to look forward to other than Div 1.

Jewel doesnt care about the result as long as he gets his pay packet but ME have a look in the stands and watch the dwindling crowds and pass this info onto PJ as apparently he cant read!

I seem to remember when Jim lost his job(and I wanted him out) there were demos outside the North Stand to get rid. Jim did a far better job than PJ has done and yet there have been no demos and and only a lack lustre attempt with chanting to get the Manager out. Is it just this board that are so negative or are we blinkered and all pessimists ? . Coming on here reading all these negative comments depresses me but the harsh reality is we cannot all be wrong. I despair that the Club makes no effort to talk to its lifeblood the supporters and really fear for our future now.

We are one of seven championship clubs who could potentially change their manager in the next 14 days.

The clubs who i think will be having a look are Blackburn, Bolton, Peterborough, Watford, Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley.

This is why we have to act now to get the best available man for the job.

Act now.
