Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

Harry will advise Marcus,But will not accept the position. Some of the names being "touted" by some fans do appear bizzare!!! It is my belief that Marcus needs to man up and appoint a Footballing CEO,first and foremost. Simon Clegg in my opinion is as much use as "Tits on a nun" and is not a strong enough character in football circles.
My tip for the manager post is ambitious, motivational, has some connections and demands players respect.........His name is Paul Ince

For the grace of god GO, before our once great club sinks to depths from which it might possibly never return!!! and take that muppet Clegg with you, unfortunately we are stuck with the faceless Evans, without his cash we would be sunk already lets hope he wakes up and attends to this dire situation before its too late.

How about Brian McDermott should Reading decide to make a managerial change?

PJ says he wont quit, same stubborn as made by Roy Keane, and that is NOT in the interests of the club .In their opinion they were doing all they could , well that may well be true, but it is not working and there is nothing to indicate ,be it next month or two more years down the line that it will .IF ,IF ,Harry was appointed HE REALLY COULD CHANGE THINGS FOR THE BETTER,Whilst there will ever been one Sir Bobby,i think Harry is a manager with the will ,passion and character to transform ITFC . So IF M E doe's really want to get him in and its not just paper gossip, he should do it NOW . Come on Marcus bring it on, lets get the show on the road and get some life back into Portman Rd .COYB .

i'm with most of the postings listed but new managers dont hit the ground running and need to get to know the players, spare a thought for the new signings and the young home grown players who, after promises from Jewell to play youth, do not get their game, his choice on his starting 11 is abysimal, Hyam and Carson from the outset, youth, desire and fast legs, whereas Jewell seems to like him work with Jet, who, imo, does not deserve to start, he has been terrible this season and does not seem to have fire in his gut!!!!!!

There is no 1-2 touch football
There is no decent crossing (hard/fast) into the box, all high floating lobs that never find a teammate, that are defended easily.
There is no determiation to win
The crowd is dwindling, and the drummers need to be relocated to beside the directors box and see how they like them next to them.
The Cardiff game on Sky may be a record low attendance for a league game, even with £10 tickets if jewell is still in charge. I for one as a season ticket holder won't be going when I can watch the current rubbish, on TV.

Think the not quitting really got to do with PJ not entitled to the remaining contractual sum (Money etc) if he quits..different if PJ is sacked... ME will then have to pay the full remaining sum of PJ's contractual terms...

With work difficult to find, one can't blame PJ for wanting to stick around...honour really has got little, if any, to do with football nowadays...

Oh Dear. It's not so clear what has gone wrong. But PJ has turned the corner couple of times now only to turn belly up again. There is a limit to how many times you can manage that. Harry can do things to your head but at his age he's lost his passion for the game.So not an answer as we need an answer to long time development.

@ipswich61 - seems to be the same as last night. SkyBet still have the book open at EVENS.

Seems to be a combination of Redknapp and Evans both being at the game together (did anyone see them together?) and betting patterns. Mills was quite damning of Jewell on Radio Suffolk and even said he'd be interested in the position, he also admitted he's always trying to work out what can be done with the Town team and that he felt the existing squad was enough to work with. Mills also admitted that he'd been out of the game for a long time and wouldn't be an obvious candidate. However this type of talk does signify that people aren't talking about if Jewell will be sacked but who will replace him when it happens. As they say, "dead man walking".

If it doesn't happen tomorrow then I think he has a maximum of one week in his position and that's only to cut back the awkwardness of a caretaker manager during the loan window.

Personally I'd like to see Klug and/or Osman installed as caretaker manager although I think Chris Hutchings and/or Sean McCarthy are more likely to be chosen by the club (unless they're dispatched the same time as PJ). We all know the direction the club should be going and the direction it seems to be going - using an analogy while looking for the A12 it's took a wrong turn at Copdock and ended up in the Shotley Peninsular.

I'm really not sure if Clegg should be such a target. He's become the scapegoat when most supporters don't really know what he does at the club. He's probably most guilty of not engaging fans at their level rather than doing a bad job. He gets the blame for transfers not being completed but also has to work within the constraints he's given - in other words someone else in the same position isn't likely to do much better but they may have a bit more charisma. Is that enough reason to sack someone?

A day in the life of an Ipswich footballer, they drive to training (if they're not banned) in their expensive sports cars and sit around in their flip-flops chatting with their mates, before ringing their agents to see what deals they've got for them.
Then knock a ball about for a couple of hours, before going off to Nando's for lunch and a bit of tweeting to see if they are still adored, before going home for an afternoon of playstation.
Then on saturday they turn up at the ground, reluctantly sign their signature a few times, pose for a few pictures, then run out on the pitch with no desire to win at all

I'm not quite understanding why.......this idiot is still at our club!!!!! Get some self respect and leave, hanging on for a payoff shows how much you respect the club and fans. To make matters worse we have the likes of JET aka J Ego Tastic having the nerve to spout off back to the fans whilst playing to the level of a Blue Square Premier standard player and showing no interest on the pitch.

Very sad times for the fans of our proud club who are losing their identity and affinity with the club. Please Marcus as a fellow fan make us proud to shout COYB again!

Mick McArthy is free and has a decent record of getting clubs up from this league. Jewell will never be able to get consistent performances from this team so time for change has come.

@wrighty - yeah but in the wrong position!

Yeah a lot of managers names being touted around and to be honest quite a few of them I'm shaking my head at, personally I wanted Curbishley when Keane was sacked but I believe he's been out of the game for about 4 seasons now, Can't see Harry coming here so who does that leave us with?. Interesting that Bruce has made a good start with Hull (surprisingly).
After seeing Barnsley play last night (a mix of good passing football and dire closing down from Birmingham) I see no repeat against them as per last season, that's if PJ makes it as far as next weekend.
