Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

Up until today I was prepared to give Jewell a little more time but sadly I now have to say he has to go and quickly. Today was a great opportunity to get that much needed win but when I saw the team selection I was worried. Luongo and Drury (although both played reasonably well) just will not work as there is no ball winner there. NDaw was one of our better players against Wolves and he gets dropped. We all know that Martin is far more effective playing in the hole behind our striker(s) but he persists in playing him out wide. I cannot agree with an earlier post that this league is mediocre in fact it gets stronger every year but we have not kept up with the dealings of other Clubs in terms of transfer dealings. At the moment I cannot see 3 teams worse than us in the short or long term. For me Redknapp will not come here as he needs money and will not get it here. The start of any sort recovery has to be at the back where we look so fragile.
We will all have our opinions on who to replace Jewell and although I don't think Jewell will be sacked quite yet Mick McCarthy would certainly sort the back line out and as Mick Mills said on Radio Suffolk after the match we do have a reasonable squad so the new Manager will have plenty to work with. Please Mr Evans make an announcement of some kind so us fans the lifeblood of the Club at least know your intentions.

As much as I'd love Harry I just can't see it. He's got nothing to prove and in his 60's, why would he come to town in all honesty? As for Jewell , clearly his time is up and even he has admitted as much in his interview, but i have a degree if sympathy with him. I didn't go today, but did wednesday night and although he has made errors (poor defence too short etc etc) the players take zero responsibility. Jewell has shown a lot of faith and good man management with chopra but it's been thrown back in his face. He also pulled Martin back from exile, only for him to try things like that ridiculous flick on the halfway line (wear pink boots). Jet is an enigma and even cresswell looked off the pace (money has turned his head). I have no faith whatsoever in the modern day footballer, they couldn't care less.

what annoyed me most of all today is that certain players didnt even look like they were trying which takes the pi** considering our posistion,at times no one was willing to make a tackle and we dont have any leaders on the pitch which was so evident today, players didnt even appear to want the ball at throw ins etc like freckin statues!!and im not accusing smith & chambers of not giving it 100%,so if a manager cant get them to do these fundamental things as a team what does that say.we should be dictacting the tempo at home but apart from luongos run 1st half it was awful stuff.

For Crying out loud..seriously,Redknapp?!

I think it's been enough of a bloody circus at our club over the last 3 years..yeah Redknapp may do a decent job but do we want more upheaval cos that's what it'll be and then more again when he flits off to a bigger club in a couple of years time.

The next guy we appoint should be here for the next 5 years+ (and hopefully beyond)..ie,someone youngish, intelligent & hungry..you know my choice - Billy Davies.

hopefully by the time i wake up tomorrow morning i will have had a nice dream that paul jewell has been sacked and that nice man mr redknapp is the new manager as this current situation is getting beyond a joke i found myself wanting us to lose this game just so pj would be sacked but on the other hand i wanted us to win it because i don't want to see us playing in div 1 so all them budgie smugglers can laugh even more than they are now just hope this doesn't turn into one long horrible nightmare

If Redknapp does come here, and I cannot see it myself, I would like it to be in a sort of mentor role to a young up and coming Manager.

Matt Holland maybe?

Didn't go to the game, but according to the BBC match stats Town had 22 strikes on goal of which 11 were on target yet had only one goal to show for it. That suggests to me that shots are being taken out of panic rather than waiting to engineer opportunities where the probabilities of scoring are more in there favour. Good teams, especially foreign ones, don't waste chances like that usually because they create goals rather than hit and hope.
Perhaps someone actually at the game can shed some light on the quality of those Town goal attempts?

First a foremost PJ has to be sacked first. This will either come Monday this or next week.

On the Redknapp front, not sure that he is the answer. Also it could be that ME is also looking at him in a Director of Football role, which would mean Cleggy out of the picture for transfer dealings. A less glamourous but Ipswich coach/manager such as Holland etc could then be brought in. Just a thought and another spin in the situation.

Also know a few Pompey fans and whilst Harry brought then such success at what price now, looking at them!

Some people on here are quite blinkered. Marcus Evans has money to release to the club, just not to Paul Jewell. See Paul Taylor. It appears to me that this has been sanctioned by somebody else other than Jewell, given failure to land people for less money over relatively minor money disputes. Jewell will be gone in week, he was a mistake from outset, and it may be Harry. Who would have thought we would have had Roy Keane, disaster that he was. Anybody who thinks Harry would be a disaster no idea. He is a motivator like Martin O'Neill. Paul Jewell cannot manage current day players.

Anyone who hasn't listened to the interview with PJ after the game have a listen. It's interesting and you can hear by Jewells tone that he is under pressure. He's made so many poor desicions the bloke, he says about how he still feels he can turn the club around but if it goes wrong we will be in one hell of a mess, enough is enough. As for a manager, we need a younger manager in my opinion, someone the players can relate to. Derek Mcinnes came in and saved Bristol City last season and look where they are now. We should try Karl Robinson in my opinion.

To all those saying Mick Mills, Seriously. He has not managed for years, when he did he was rubbish, and his monotone voice on the radio is enough to send an insomniac to sleep. No to Butcher as well.

to everybody doubting harry coming here he actually said on talksport this week he was "on call" for a championship job until the end of the season. he cud easily steady the ship while ME has 8 months to find the long term man for the job.it would be a great move

I watched PJ in post conference and he looked and sounded dead man walking to me. Not angry, not passionate, just a bit sad , lost & resigned like the rest of us. Its hard to feel any personal animosity towards him ( unlike the dark bitter, psychopathic Lord who can still starts fights in empty houses) but he can't and shouldn't dodge accountability for the utter tripe that is there for all to see each week. Dealt a bad hand? really? Compare our wage bill to , say, Barnsley, Watford, Huddersfield, Charlton .....we have budget and resources a plenty to do way way better than we have. Yes of course the likes of Chopra and JET have let us down ( the performance of the latter today was an utter disgrace for any professional) but you can't spend £3mn on such a pair plus god knows how much per week and expect to dodge the bullet. PJ is of course just one part of a wider management problem and the other two thirds will remain long after he has gone I'm afraid. What we are seeing is just the culmination of a period of decay and stagnation that started the minute we all voted to accept Evans into our club. Good luck to the next lemming, his 3 predeccors will never work in football again so that must tell him enough about what he is inheriting to make him run away screaming. But Glen Hoddle??!! dear God , I know we're desperate but please. And yeah, whatever happened to Jas? In a twisted kinda way, I almost miss him. Almost.

Having been widely tipped to be the England manager 6 months ago, it would seem a very strange move for Harry if he came to Ipswich considering his age.

He would raise the profile of the club, probably attract better players to come and get more out of the players we have. So on the face of it, it seems too good to be true.

However, don't forget: He has been accused of financial irregularities in the past. He was manager of Portsmouth very shortly before their demise (some would say he financially overstretched them and leaving before damaging his reputation).

The simple nature of Marcus Evans' approach to running our football club makes me worry. What would happen if Harry was given money to spend and we didn't achieve. Would ME and Harry then leave us with a mess we couldn't sort out? Things haven't gone the way ME has wanted so far, could this be his final role of the dice?

But of course the Harry rumours may only be rumours...

scotland was our only goal threat for me, martin had his usual tame shots/pass backs, ellington blazed over 2nd half when in box,but basically we never got beyond the back four to create a 1 on 1 with keeper as we have no pace on either flank and lets be honest jet& murphys best posistions allegedly are as centre forwards not wide players, drury was pinging a few decent balls 2nd half but charlton always had players to combat-jet was woeful and deserved to be subbed, and murphy looks like his mind is elsewhere, charlton came at us early 2nd half got 2 goals and then sat back i thought we were gona get hit for 3 or 4 but surprisingly they backed off and seemed content to sit on lead, thats how i saw it but hey as chopra says we dont know nothing, i just think some people watch the games with bloomin blinkers on!!

If i was competley honest i really do not mind if town lose a game, we can,t win them all! there is not a team on the on planet that can do that!
What i do mind is paying my money, supporting my club and watching a team that just does not give a toss, i mind about a manager that has a salary that would buy me a house in a month, and he has not got a clue, i mind about all the other fans getting ripped off on a weekly basis, i mind about being fleeced in Planet Blue for anything that has ITFC on it!
But most of all i mind that our club steeped in history and tradition is the laughing stock on the country!

i feel paul jewell is being sold short by m evansand clegg they have failed to land players pj asked for they at no time come clean to media over direction of club . he is obviously under pressure and it may be time for change but we should not believe that will solve everything .i am told clegg was given list of five cbs in summer who wanted to join but we didnt get any of them.pj has supported chopra through his problems and been repayed dismally chopra in my opinion is a spent force who over rates himself yet we all wanted him to sign hindsight is a wonderfull thing all the blame does not lie at pjs door if evans and clegg had got half players pj wanted things would be different

no ones said that redknapp would be a disaster just thinking of the bigger picture for the future of our club,it needs rebuilding big time, and he would want vast sums of £ and if he did come and get us up he would be gone again.but then i guess thats the way it is these days
