Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

I'm not normally one to jump on the band wagon but on this one I'm getting a leg up from plenty of town fans who like me have giving pj time to prove his worth, but there comes a time when you must admit defeat,I'm sorry to say in the time pj has been at town I can honestly say I really am struggling to work out his philosophy ,he really does not have enough tactical awareness to drive us forward,Paul your time has come to fall on your sword goodbye and good luck,
Here's to a brighter future!

Come on people there is no way Harry Redknapp would come to Portman Road and why should Paul Jewell walk out on a job. He will be like any of us and wait to get the bullet and be paid the compensation.

If Paul Jewell goes then Clegg should follow suit, since he has been the CEO at Ipswich Town we have been on a downward spiral. Would you have faith in Clegg and Evans get the correct type of hungry young manager to replace PJ

Whoever gets the job this board will not support him, we need a 3 year plan where the fans can get behind the team. For the past 5 years my wife has been fed up with me coming home miserable, it is payback time for EVANS.

I have backed PJ for some time, but this is the day I turn on him, it's taken its time. But Ive had it. I can't watch my beloved Ipswich keep losing, it hurts too much!!
For so many years have we suffered from the lack of results, poor football and no f*cking atmosphere at Portman Road. Bringing in Harry will change that.
I wish you all the best in the future Paul, but it didn't work out for you here.
You are a funny man, and a nice bloke. But not the right football manager for Ipswich Town Football club"""

Just turned on the computer after being out since being at the match and I have to agree with Sindra95. I too have not been in favour of sacking the manager but I have had enough now for all the above reasons. I am really disappointed it has come to this.

Sindre and alfromcol, it is people like you who hold this club back. We need more passion, criticism, get it done now approach. Your approach died 30 years ago. Move on. Lambert at Norwich built a promotion side in a year. Building a side over 5 years is a relic from a bygone era. Reason? Money. Not yours. But others. Especially in championship.

Clegg is the biggest problem at the club, he couldn't negociate his way out of a paper bag. Neither Keane or Jewell have been able to sign their prefered players. However, I have supported Jewell from the start (unlike many so called supporters), but I now feel he has lost the dressing room so reluctantly now think he has to go. I like him, he is honest (sometimes too honest), good character and really wish things had worked out better. Think there are many issues at the club above manager level also.

I also believe that sections of our so called supporters dont help, for years now they have constantly been on the backs of certain players, this has resulted in numerous players never realising their potential. I mean if your constantly told your sh!t at your job after a while even the most confident are going to self doubt, and it shows in some of the performances. The way several players (in particular certain younger ones) have been treated has been a joke. Thus the saying so called supporters. Many are far too fickle to be true. What we do need is to all be 100% behind the team and club. We only have to look up the road at an example if it. Again very painful to say but their support both in numbers and attitude during their bad time in league one very much puts us too shame

Stoofer, alfromcol Is this not what you guys do to jas, daley, walberswick et al? There is a cabal on this website, as seen by the ridiculous positive numbers favouring sindre posts all the time. Check it out since change of website. It is all about balance, and I am trying to provide it....We all know Jewell should have been sacked ages ago. If you do not know this, you cannot see the wood for the trees....

The number of new players we've got we still need time to gell (most of other sides with numerous new players are also still finding their feet, admittedly though with a bit more success than us), so any new manager will still have that to cope with. Redknapp would have an initial impact but has said himself he'd only be interested in a short, till end of season, spell in the championship- do we really want more upheavel next summer? Forgetting what i think ( I don't suppose ME will be listening to me!) a bit of me thinks he will let PJ see out contract (after all he kept him on despite two dire runs last year) but on other hand he got rid of RK. If there is a change a good motivator who can bring about gradual change would be great and a treat after last few years and managers, and i think would get fans behind him.

And so we come to what is the end of another managers reign, i hope the successor is chosen carefully, lets face it, cant really see it being redknapp, fantastic manager where there are funds and resources available and that isnt portman road, is it? Any manager employed by itfc, will have to fall within the ffp restrictions, the more i think about it, the more i cant see it being redknapp.

One of the reasons i was behind jewell keeping his job is the lack of suitable candidates available, no one out of a job excites me at the moment and i really cant see Evans paying compensation. Some of the names mentioned on here, no thanks, i mean Gary Megson? i would rather keep Jewell. it seems certain now Jewell will go, just hope they think long and hard about who. It was after all Redknapp who recommended Jewell to Evans, ...coyb

My last post suggests that I am agreeing with you. I have to admit that I have not been so clever as you have in spotting a poor manager. Probably not watched, played or been in football as long as you. I was pleased when both RK and PJ were appointed as I thought at that stage, both could do a good job here. Time has proved me wrong.

I await with renewed hope on the naming of the next manager and look forward to your insights into whether he will do well or not.

Alfromcol, if it was Harry, backed with maybe 5 million kitty, I would bet my left marble he would get us up. Probably this year. Other than this, I agree with some other posters on here, Billy Davies. I would eat humble pie if I am wrong. We need a motivator, somebody to galvanise the club from top to bottom. Jewell is not it. He is forever saying sorry and making excuses. Leaders do not make excuses. Bobby Robson, under all pressure he had, never shirked responsibility. That is why the players loved him.

First of all i want Jewell out, i did at the end of last season.
But people keep saying he should walk? why would he? like someone said earlier if he walks he dont get his dosh, so ME needs to act now!
its a shame cos hes a decent guy i think and i actually think he really does care a lot and is poassionate, the facts are though it isnt working for him at Ipswich.
very poor signings, poor tatics, doesnt have a best 11, keeps changing things to often.

But just getting rid of Jewell is not enough, we need to get rid of clegg too, i hate this guy so much. ME has ruined us too!

sad sad times at the club at the mo!
its amazing how your team can ruin your weekend and affect your happiness, i think i need some tablets to get me through this horrible ITFC period!

If funds are available, then why werent they available to Jewell to get the bloody defence sorted out? if it was because Evans had no faith in Jewell, he should have got rid of Jewell when he lost the faith. COYB

I think everyone now knows its time for a change.

Although I have always been sceptical about the appointment of Paul Jewell as Blues manager, he cannot take all the blame for what is happening at our club.

Certainly, he's not the man for the job but his hands have been tied in a lot of aspects, not least getting in the playing staff he wants. The behind the scenes politics of football does the day to day management of our club no favours at all. At times, being manager of ITFC must be a little like trying to shovel snow with a pitchfork... impossible!

I think Harry would be a great boost to our beloved Town, so, I envisage Clegg f***ing that up before it comes to fruition!

Whatever's going to happen, I pray it happens soon and that it makes a significant difference on the pitch.

To Marcus139 - i can see wood, but i cannot see the trees as it night time.

With regards to Jewell - again i am another one who has supported him, but the chap has to go. He will not walk - so Evans needs to man up and sack him in the morning.

As for replacements - i have said previously about McCarthy but i had forgotten all about Billy Davies. Much rather have him. Cannot see Redknapp leaving Hampshire and his cushy number on MOTD.

Taxi for Jewell.

Ask Marcus Evans....all I know is that 2 million quid becomes available to sign Paul Taylor all of a sudden...I know we got sell on from Jordan Rhodes, but that does not cover it. I do think Paul Taylor is a quality player though. We need to get rid of JET asap. He is a rotten apple and rotten things make everything else rotten. Chopra the same.

Certain posters of comments on here remind me of voters at elections. They demand change, learn nothing, forget everything and before you know it they're repeating the whole process again.

If change is what we get, and that now appears likely, lets please, please learn from the last 3 or 4 years. If we don't and more importantly the club doesn't, then the demise of ITFC will reach depths that are frightening to even consider.
It may be trying to relive former glory days and with the greatest of respect to PJ, who is still is in the job, I'd give serious consideration to Butcher. Someone who played under Robson, experience of being at a smaller club as well as the complete big time and someone who knows how to defend.

I love my team but Harry Redknapp???? At the beginning of the year Harry was Tottenham manager and odds on hot favourite to be the next England manager. And he'd come to Ipswich....really!!!

Jewell has lost the plot, you can tell by his answers in this article....the clock is ticking...what's Alan Curbishley doing these days?????
