Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

The longer our club carries on with negative vibes the more games we will lose, wolves played ordinary football and charlton did the same. But these teams can sense we will roll over, huddersfield on reflection should have won, this situation is down to the simple fact that the club is going nowhere fast.

Jewell to go quickly? i do not think so, we have several tough games coming up, can,t for the life of me seeing us getting thing from them!
It will be after those that he goes, and as for HR getting the job, lets be realistic, spurs job, then wanted to manage the national team, and then to sunny Suffolk! Never gonna happen!

Looking now at the situation Im feeling more uncertain than ever about PJs future I personally would give him 4 more games to turn it around ok we are without our strike force and weve got a really on form Barnsley followed by Brighton then Cardiff and Hull... the cards are really stacked against us right now...will PJ see these games through to the bitter end or conceade I hope he stays and makes a fight of it I truly believe he is a good man but I am appauled at how the owner ME has distributed such a pualtry budget to Paul we pay the players some of the lowest wages in this division what on earth can PJ do with that he has had some fantastic targets all of which fell through on personal terms nothing to do with PJ...you have to cut with both sides of the sword here meaning that there is more than one problem here to lump it all on to PJs shoulders is wrong theres an upper level problem here Ive said it before this is potetially the richest Leauge in the world when you consider the payments for promotion so why on earth does ME not open the wallet or even max out on the bank loans and get the players we need money talks and BS walks in this game ...what are the aperations of our owner thats what the real question is here and yes is PJ the man right now to be Manager of a club that will not fund him ...I dont beleive theres a manger out there that would touch this job having to deal with what PJ has had to deal with and then the last four games are down now to the players to save PJs job will they do that for him or is this there time to say no we want a different gaffer Im not hear to say what is right but please dont lump it all on one man thats really not fair hes done the very best he can with what his been givin...if he resigns or stays to the end I will have a lot of respect for him but I know history will forgo the fairness and say he was rubbish but in real terms he is a victum of the clubs ideology right now what if Mick Mc Carthy or Harry Redknap comes in do you believe that they would even consider a role here with the obviuos non ambition to progress the club finnacially ie to make the Prem alas I feel that it is now too late save a miricle of the team not shipping goals and gaining three point the next 4 matches that will save PJ but at least look at it from both sides.

All we can do is support the team, coming up with our own idea for the 'perfect' manager to replace P.J isn't working.

I really thought he'd be gone by now... but he's not?

Marcus Evans is an astute businessman and know's it's bad for his personal image if the club that has his name all over it is not performing well.

It's also worth noting that people in the game endorse giving P.J enough time to turn it around... I hope we get sorted one way or the other... with or without P.J.

Keep the faith

Talbs77 - as if this Club can afford to lose support to 'those down the road' - pathetic comment, but not unexpected.

Warky's Tash - 'decent educated people' ?? - then you should know what is said about self assessment and praise - shouldn't you ??

You people deserve Paul Jewell - for your outstanding ambition.
Because you're educated !!!!

Hope he stays for you,

Warkys tash - apologies I should have made myself clearer, Magilton did spend money but I don't think he was afforded the time that both Keane and Jewell have had, I may well get corrected on that though, and although I wasn't a big Magilton fan given the two managerial lash ups since he was like Mourinho in comparison

itfc1981 - not sure what you mean, are you saying its Cleggs fault that we signed Ellington as I assume the manager instructed him to do so? also the likes of Austin and Boyd clearly had delusions of grandeur and wanted too much money, unfortunately whether we like it or not we are complying with the new FFP rules and that doesn't afford us the luxury of big salaries for players, although 10-15k a week means they probably won't starve!!

h32 I think you need to look at how many people support my view on here rather than your rants.

I think the club would gladly buy you a season ticket for that lot up the road as well as a taxi as I suspect you would probably get lost in your own back garden.

h32- let me get this straight , so Warkys_tash can't call himself educated but u can constantly call yourself a "winner" . Bit hypocritical isnt it ?

Talbs77 - and as for you - PATHETIC comment.

And sarcasm is the 'lowest form of wit' - as you should know extremely well.

Don't worry about me and who supports my views - your man PJ needs your support - and who knows, you may collectively win something in your lives.

I haven't had time to read everything that's been posted, but have picked up a few bits and pieces.

Football culture has changed massively since I started going to Portman Road in the mid-1950s, but surely ANYONE interested in, or responsible for, ITFC will recall that the two best managers Ipswich have had are Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson. George Burley had a bit to offer for a while, too. The significance of their appointments is that they were new kids on the block when they started at Portman Road, not old stagers.

ME should be listening to canny scouts and shrewd observers who are watching football at all levels up and down the country, not hob nobbing with rich and famous has-beens Imposing household name managers from the top will not develop football at Ipswich and will most likely see more of ME's money, and the money I still sometimes pay at the turnstile, drain away.

Who are/where are the good young managers and coaches who will lead and motivate players a bit nearer their own age and start with some new ideas?

Why even think about Redknapp? The training ground at Southampton was a shambles when he was there. The level of football he's been looking at most recently is quite irrelevant to what Ipswich needs.

I can't stand HR really. But it would be brilliant if he were our manager. It's as simple as that. Poor old PJ. It's just not working for him. He's not the Antichrist. And he is on a contract, which he's perfectly entitled to see out. PS Is it at all possible for the likes of ¥•••••• and ¥¥¥¥ and ##### to stop calling other genuinely loyal supporters idiots and fools and prats? At the very least, supporting your team, whatever angle you take, if you do it genuinely, is surely beyond criticism If you think differently, then I really think you ought to question whether you really LIKE football at all. COYB, wherever we may be

Meant to say PJ is entitled to see, or try to see, his contract out. And before some big baldy loudmouth slags me off for saying thus, HE JUST IS. That is why it's a contract. Don't argue.
