Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows
Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32

Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.

Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”

Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.

Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.

“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.

“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?

“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.

“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.

“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.

Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.

Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.

“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.

“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”

He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.

“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.

“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”

Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.

“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”

The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.

Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.

“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

I'm a jeweller still but I believe I'm giving a Manger a chance but if there I any truth in getting in redknapp then get him in he would be undoubtedly the best manager in the league and a huge step in the right direction but I think jewell can do it even if some of his team selections could be suspect with hyam though he's right give the lad a chance and lt him beak only young in my opinion the problem is with clegg but I think Marcus Evans is great and has done great things with Ipswich do get off his back redknapp has the potential to get Ipswich up and established with the right funds Redknapp in please mr Evans if you can do it and don't let it get to late and let him go elsewhere

I've heard some really ridiculous suggestions for the soon to be vacant manager's job at ITFC ... here's one for you.

George Graham... I know he's been out of the game for like 25 years but still look at the immense Arsenal defensive system he created and Wenger took advantage of.

If we bribe the nurses at the care home I reckon he could get us out of trouble this season?

What are the odds now on Town getting to the playoffs? Just wondering if its worth a punt worth taking with a shilling or two.

We need change, of that there is no doubt. The million dollar question is who. Mr Redknapp, if the rumours are true, is going to want a mahoosive war chest, as Pompey have found to their cost, but there is no doubting his motivational qualities & enthusiasm for the game. However, would M E be prepared to pump in gazillions more into our ailing club. I think not. Ideally, we need a young up & coming manager in the mould of Paul Lambert/ Nigel Adkins. Any suggestions fellow blues?.

...... some of you deserve nothing more than for Jewell to stay as Manager - even now you condone his performance, dealings and tactics.
Where does all this 'nice bloke' stuff come into it - would any of you (and you know who you are) hold down your job, because you are a 'nice bloke'?? - Pathetic.
This Club has changed, and will never return to former esteem - some of which is down to some of you, for obvious reasons.

Rumoured that Jewell is to be offered an extended contract tomorrow - good, you deserve each other.

There's not a lot out there at the moment.
Stand out names on this list for me are Redknapp, Hoddle, Billy Davies or Curbs who are currently out of work.

Billy Davies is a realistic shout...

Billy Davies is the obvious choice...look at the job he did at Preston,Derby and Forest, all on a relatively small budget too.

Keanish I like that Billy Davies shout, totally forgotten about him to be honest.

H32, its not that people on here support pj to stay on if its not right for the club, but theres a way of doing it and just coming on here and mindlessly slagging jewell off is in my view the wrong way of doing it.

Its what this club used to be about, doing things in the right way. I suggest if you dont like it you go support that lot up the road.

It doesn't have to be a manager, Chris Hughton was a coach as was Steve Clarke, they've both adjusted to management quite well. Outisde of the box but Carl Fletcher from Plymouth might not be a bad shout, not achieved too much so far but he's had a shoestring budget and has worked with some younger players. Plymouth would need the money also.

Although I'm with everyone in the opinion we should be doing a lot better, I realistically don't know how much better we could be doing with the resources at the club given to Paul Jewell.
Looking at the Championship table, there are at least 12 teams who could go up. That's half the league. This is the most competitive league you can get and Ipswich at the moment aren't competing well enough. Saying this, I'm not sure who could be doing a better job with an average team.
As for the Harry Redknapp links, as much chance of Jose coming here with his SBR links

one way the club has remained faithful to its traditions, is in giving the managers time , this they have done with Jewell and long may that tradition continue. ok it hasnt worked out but giving him time was the course of action....Coyb

h32- do u actually read the posts on here or just scan them and pick up bits ?. Cos if u did read them u would see that no one is condoning PJ and no one is saying he should stay in his job cos he is nice. What I and i believe lots of others are saying is that , yes NOW is the time to change ( something I thought u would be happy about ) but that PJ is not some sort of criminal, he is a DECENT bloke who has achieved things in his career, but who ultimately has failed here and who just deserves a bit more respect than shown by some people on here. For the record that wasn't aimed at u, because even though I rarely agree with u , u havent as far as I can recall resorted to some of the c **p posted by others.

Summarised. Although I don't think they should title chasers they should still be performing a lot better. Give him at least 10 games to change the fortunes.

Sorry PJ has to go, not sure if I want Harry Redknapp or if he is interested in town but anybody would be better than PJ,

Warkys_Tash added 22:12 - Sep 23
PJ is a likeable man but unfortunately isn't cutting the mustard, results are not & will never be good enough. The clubs fans are staying away & the atmosphere dreadful, our once great club is on the edge of the Abyss

I wish PJ all the best in his life and there is no need for so called fans to be abusive towards him. However, it is now time for a change.

Please no McLeish, Cotterril or McCarthy. Redknapp would be great but is that just a pipe dream? Who would have predicted Roy Keane??

@H32 Read my previous post. We are not Jewell supporters, just not haters. We are Ipswich fans that believe in supporting our manager & team - regardless who pulls on the shirt (yes, that included Andy Marshall) We are decent, educated people, that is the difference.

@Keanish, I suggested Billy Davies when Keane got the chop, he would be my realistic first choice - after Redknapp (unrealistic?). Redknapp would get the crowds back to PR, no doubt.
