Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Wednesday, 12th Aug 2009 15:37

Town are reported to have completed the signing of Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy for £1.5 million. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were back in for the Republic of Ireland international a week ago.

A deal between Town and the Black Cats is now said to have been concluded, although as yet there is no confirmation from the clubs. Murphy’s former side Waterford United are believed to be receiving a 10% sell-on.

Murphy was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

I dont think he is a great golascorer. But he will be a good attacking influence.

For those familiar with champ manager... more a forward than a striker.

Will strengthen the squad.

i think if true our team/squad in 90% ready for a real promotion push, just 1 more centre half and i will upgrade it to 100%

Daryl was a good player for Roy at the Championship level and perhaps more importantly, loyal to him in that viper's pit that was the Sunderland dressing room near the end.

Excellent addition to the squad. At this level Murphy is a very strong player.

Cue the usual whining from the 'but why did we get rid of Rhodes/Lee/Kuqi/Zondervan/Baxter?' brigade

i think he's a good player and will chip in with the odd goal here & there, wont he be more likely 2 play wide left ? and walters upfront with martin on the right ?

Maybe he'll fill the role of attacking left mid-fielder. I'm not inpressed with Garven at all nowdays, he likes too much time, is slow and lightweight. So if Murphy can improve on at least two out of three we may have just teh player that will link up with Martin and defence. I dont think he's the 20+ player we're all wanting but if he can score 10+ that will go a long way to getting us results

Please, please let this be true! Ask ANY sunderland fan how bad he is and you will get the same answer. How he commands a £1.5m fee I don't know, but I'll gladly give him a lift down to you just to get shot of him.

I dont want to come across to down on this news but I really dont think he will benifit the side that much. He wont score many goals and I wouldnt have thought he will create that much either. We saw what wickham is capable of last night but have to agree with RK that we cant push him as he is still developing. I do think we need a striker but not murphy i think there are much better players out there. Which brings me back to jack bell m,y good friend from cork city what a talent.

Don't really know much about Murphy, but for me he starts with a clean sheet and everything to play for. It will be interesting to see which position Murphy adopts and what RK's first team is after the dust has settled. Obviously RK rates Wickham, but has said that you can't play youngsters on a regular basis. Also, I suspect that one or two more familiar names might be on the way OUT, before the end of the transfer window.

hi sunderland fan here in peace. I dont mean to pee on your parade but I wouldnt be getting all that excited about signing Murphy if true. The guy has a heart the size of a pea and as for being "strong" and " good in the air" those comments couldnt be further from the truth. If he does go to ipswich there will be a week long party in Sunderland and the day he signs will be a national holiday! as for the comment about the dressing room at sunderland being a viper pit this was mostly down to Keano alienating members of the squad. That said i am still an admirer of Roy a hope he does well for you's and hope to see you in the prem in years to come

Would be a decent addition to the squad and I'm sure will be able to do a job for us at this level, just hope that if he does sign it doesnt mean Wickham will lose some opportunities to get first team football...I think Keane rates Wickham as highly as the rest of us so I dont think it will, but as Keane mentioned at 16 he might not be ready for first team action in every game of the season, so an extra forward would give us cover, and Murphy would allow us to switch from 4-3-3 to 4-5-1 without making subs!!!

I could be wrong and he could turn out to be blinding, but the general feel is that he is not a big goalscorer we need and he has already turned us down twice for a better offer.

We'll see?!?

Awesome signing for this level! Remember, Keane's priority is promotion, and this is exactly the kind of player who'll do well in the championship.

Everybody slating him seems to think we're already in the Premiership.

Please ignore the comments from other Sunderland fans.

Murphy was a vital member of our promotion team and contributed some important goals. He was played more of a left midfielder than a striker and is a good crosser of the ball.

Personally think he's a good signing for you but if you achieve promotion this year you'll need to move him on.

Good luck...
