Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Wednesday, 12th Aug 2009 15:37

Town are reported to have completed the signing of Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy for £1.5 million. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were back in for the Republic of Ireland international a week ago.

A deal between Town and the Black Cats is now said to have been concluded, although as yet there is no confirmation from the clubs. Murphy’s former side Waterford United are believed to be receiving a 10% sell-on.

Murphy was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

if he is a half decent finisher I am sure he will get some goals for us as we seem to be able to create afew chances.

Agree with the calls for an extra CB, but what do people think about a replacement for norris? Or do keanes comments on Quinn maybe indicate he could have a future with us?

I think that you only need to go onto any Sunderland fan website and see how much they are jumping for joy at this potential news, especially if they are to get 1.5 mill, to realise that this may not be the best bit of business we will potentially be doing...
I fail to understand why in the last few years we seem to be more or less giving away our players for low fees and always seem to paying over the odds for new ones that don't then add quality to the squad - or is it just me....?!

So much for Keane having finished with signings. He did a good job for Keane at championship level so this could be a good thing.

EADT have dismissed this story as way off the mark. Good!!! As for the comment about it must be true... its on wikipedia... oh dear wikipedia is incredibly unreliable, according to wikipedia a few weeks ago we had signed Ched Evans as well.

This mean pabs is out, but i think Murphys abit like pabs e.g he'll hold up the ball for priskin and will only score 5 to 10 goals max. And if anyone thinks roys gunna do a rhodes on wickham i dont think its gunna happen this time.plus mabye stead might go but it seems a bit unlikely for now

Is this just more press speculation as nothing has been made concrete as yet

seems this is just media speculation, both clubs have strongly denied - the Mail had the desired effect though lots of conversations came off the back of this article!

The same Sunderland fans saying Murphy is rubbish are the same ones who are slagging off Keane, despite him getting them promoted and staying there. Spot the agenda, anyone?

At the end of the day there are too many people that think if a front player doesn't score loads of goals, they are useless. These people have no understanding of tactics and football systems.

Its clear to me that Keane is developing a squad where he'll have 3 strikers and 3 forwards fighting for 3 forward starting positions, they are:

Strikers: Priskin, Stead, Wickam
Forwards: Martin, Murphy, Walters

That, afaik is the best front 6 squad in the league. It has depth, pace, stength, youth and experience.

Losing Counago (inevitable) Rhodes and Lisbie to create that front 6 giving far more options is awesome business, I think.

i think the point is being missed, both clubs have denied anything of a signing, so like him or hate him it looks likely he may not be coming after all (but of course that could all change....)

Maybe its Brian Murphy they mean? Probably just mixed the names? :p
Anyway, i think Daryl will be a good addition =)

Good post Bluroo. Are there are a lot of short memories around but did we not have a certain James Scowcroft a few years back (pre-loan!). He was hardly a prolific 15-20 a season goalscorer, but did he nonetheless play an important role in what was a good Ipswich team?

What we will also have, unusually for Town, is a lot of big strong players who can also play good football on the ground which makes both open play and set pieces genuinely threatening and unsettling to the opposition.

@Bluroo - Who's slagging off Keane? He did a good job for us and we wouldn't be in the position we are now if it wasn't for him. As for an agenda, you're quite simply wrong, what would be the point in that?

Fact is Murphy was crap for us, whether that changes for another club is possible but very debatable judging from the 4 years of p1ss poor performances he gave us.

from a reputable source, his girlfriend is some FHM model, who my mate says is amazing and goes to all his games. That would at least be one positive from the situation!!
