Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Wednesday, 12th Aug 2009 15:37

Town are reported to have completed the signing of Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy for £1.5 million. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were back in for the Republic of Ireland international a week ago.

A deal between Town and the Black Cats is now said to have been concluded, although as yet there is no confirmation from the clubs. Murphy’s former side Waterford United are believed to be receiving a 10% sell-on.

Murphy was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

town fan from from waterford his home town here! im 50/50 on weather this is a good move by keane! on his day murphy is a good player very much a confidence player i know him personally aswell and it kinda went to his head at sunderland so he needs to knuckle down and prove himself! so if his head is right and he puts his break up with his girlfriend etc behind him everything should work out good! on another note another waterford man brian murphy trained with town today ahead of his move which will be completed when the irish season is over!

Waste of money, much better bargains to be had, hope I'm wrong but somehow I doubt it. Never wanted a donkey up front anyhow!!!

Roy's been brilliant in the transfer market so far, great at bringing through and encouraging our young players and positive tactically. Good signing which will add something extra and further strengthen the squad. Nice one.

Why does everyone think a striker has to score 20 goals a season to be any good. They have other roles to fulfill as well.

Tommy Smith would be a much better signing but cannot complain, Murphy has a chance to prove us all wrong if true

Weddings, best stick to those on a Saturday afternoon you muppet. Tommy Smith is not in the same league as this bloke and Jackson will probably go the same way as various other so called quality players from league one, i.e Billy Shape, Varney and the bloke at Bristol City.

Interesting that Hull tried to sign him, must have something left to give to the Championship. Still not convinced there's too much in this story but I don't claim to know anything!

Everyone goes on about the 20+ goal scorer?

Have we not just signed Priskin?

Once RK sorts out the midfield = more chances created which means all the Forwards should score more.

Brilliant Keano!!
I have always been a fan of this guy.
He will be our 20 goal per season striker, he is a dangerman.

Obviously nothing has materialised with Gio then!!!

Every player that pulls on the Blue & White of Ipswich Town should be given our full support. If they don't perform then Roy will give them the hairdryer treatment!!

Looking forward to singing my heart our for the lads on Saturday!

COME YOU BLUES!

Everyone is getting excited about a story that simply hasn't got any substance to it. No mention anywhere except a post on the Dail mail and here!

Some evidence please.

i think he will do alright for us, but no way will he score 20 goals not sure what gave people that idea, can some one tell me how he's a proven goal scorer?

Well said, Brightblue. Our job is to get behind the team, Roy's is to kick the slackers in the butt (metaphorically, but who knows?).

Personally, I can see Murphy doing a job alongside Priskin, but also provides cover on the left hand side. Maybe not a 20 a season man, but if he works hard and provides plenty of assists as well as a few "Back of the net"s then who can complain?

I can definitely see signs of the strength in depth (Championship level) that we have lacked for too long.

Come on you Blues!!

Couldn't care less about any of you whingers opinions. If RK wants him then it is alright by me and he gets my full support.

People just need to wait and see what he is like instead of judging him before he has kicked a ball for Town......We are so quick to judge....

Useless, rubbish goalscoring record. Who would swap Jordan Rhodes and £1.3m for Daryl Murphy?

BYRNE 16 You seem educated and honest. I agree with the idea of giving the guy a chance. The only issue which is now really getting to me, Is that he hasn't signed and I think TWTD have misfired on this one. If DDD the sports writer of the year hasn't picked it up, I doubt it to be true.

Yeah, not confirmed yet but in reaction to this 'smoke' that doesn't yet have a fire i'm of the thinking that we should not judge Murphy until he's in blue and white. I've read as many posts from sunderland fans knocking him as I have sayng that he'll do well here. Personally i'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt, and let's face it - if he's no good he won't play, just like any player under Keane.

Not the player I would have immediately gone for considering Ricky Lambert went to Saints for 1m....bargain there.
Jan V of Hesselink would be a better choice on a free in my eyes but we'll see.
I support Keano and believe he can get us promoted.
