Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Wednesday, 12th Aug 2009 15:37

Town are reported to have completed the signing of Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy for £1.5 million. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were back in for the Republic of Ireland international a week ago.

A deal between Town and the Black Cats is now said to have been concluded, although as yet there is no confirmation from the clubs. Murphy’s former side Waterford United are believed to be receiving a 10% sell-on.

Murphy was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

In Keano we trust!

With Civelli and Norris out for anothe few months, he needs some more experience in the squad.

Good link with Priskin, allows Walters to play wide. Now we are strong in height for deffence aswell as attacking.... Happy Days....

He has been very poor for us (even when in the Championship) and I can't see this changing. Poor signing for you IMO.

Roy likes to sign his old boys too. He's not the first manager in that is he?
Priskin made me smile. Hopefully Murphy won't make me laugh or weep.

Would trust RK's opinion of someone he has worked with rather than an unknown Sunderland supporters.

He's a headless chicken who just runs to the byline and produces nothing. I have seen enough of him to know that he will add nothing to this team. Even his record at Championship level is poor, something like 10 goals in a season, 2 of which were against a Luton team already relegated. Spending £1.5m on him is absolute lunacy. Sorry to dampen the mood for those impressed, but the reaction from the Sunderland fans will sum it up for you.. http://www.readytogo.net/smb/showthread.php?t=431677 - pages & pages of please be true!

"Would trust RK's opinion of someone he has worked with rather than an unknown Sunderland supporters. "

So ALL sunderland supporters opinions are wrong just because they aren't the manager? I think that seeing someone week in week out provides enough justification to form an opinion. Yes, maybe RK sees something in him in training but he has never produced this in a competitive match for us in 4 years.

A forward who can't score goals GREAT! Just what we need. I could do that and I wouldn't cost £1.5m and would want to play for the team.

I appreciate the opinions of the Sunderland fans on here, and having seen him play you would have your thoughts on his value. But I'm with Swedish Steve - if we really HAVE signed Murphy, he starts with a clean slate here and let's see what he can do and what Keano's plans are. It could be that he never really got going on Wearside, but could fit in well down here. Alternately he coudl be a big pile of poo, but I suspect Keano's judgement is a little better than that, lol!

Well, if we have signed Murphy ... I'm not bitter (wah wah wah ... sorry couldn't resist).

SAFC. You say ALL Sunderlands supporters are wrong. A few come on a messageboard and they don't all agree, What sort of gates do they get/. 40,000 plus. We tend to give too much credance to messageboard opinion, there are lots who don't ever go near a messageboard.
The most sensible thing to do is to wait and see, in the meantime I'll give more credence to RK's opinion than to a selection of Sunderland supporters.

He hasn't proven himself as a 20+ man because he has mainly been used on the left, so doesn't matter if he hasn't got the stats, if Keane plays him upfront you never know he might be amazing! Only time will tell!

I recon he wants pabs out but he obviously cant force him to go. This guy murphy is dispised my the macems. have a look at their forums. They think he is worth zero and anything for him let alone 1.5 mill is a big rip off for them.
Also many say he has the effort and heart of a pea which is worrying. Not exactly a Keane player if thats correct !

These comments I read last time he was wanted by us and cant imagine they are alot different apart from that they are now cracking the champers out .
Lets see how he does for us but he is definitely not a prolific marksman and im sure we could have done better for 1.5 mill .

To all Sunderland fans visiting this site, its all relative isn't it. Living & working in London as I do I end up meeting a lot of Tottenham fans, and most of them are still partying now given you paid £12m for Bent, they do not believe Sunderland could be so stupid.
So we have paid stupid money for Murphy you have paid stupid money for Bent

Just spoke to a Sunderland season ticket holder who said he's got all the attributes and ability to be a top top player and has a superb cross on him, but he's just so lazy and tended to go missing... sounds like another Darren Currie or Gary Roberts!!
He said if Keane can get him to put in the effort for a full 90 then he will be superb at Championship level.
