Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Town Reported to Have Signed Murphy
Wednesday, 12th Aug 2009 15:37

Town are reported to have completed the signing of Sunderland striker Daryl Murphy for £1.5 million. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were back in for the Republic of Ireland international a week ago.

A deal between Town and the Black Cats is now said to have been concluded, although as yet there is no confirmation from the clubs. Murphy’s former side Waterford United are believed to be receiving a 10% sell-on.

Murphy was close to joining the Blues in a joint £5 million deal involving Dean Whitehead earlier in the summer and even got as far as having a medical at Portman Road.

That move collapsed when Hull City came in for the frontman, but talks between Murphy and the Tigers broke down and he is still at the Stadium of Light. Whitehead subsequently moved to Stoke.

The 26-year-old, capped nine times by the Republic of Ireland without scoring, spent several spells on trial at Playford Road during 2004/05 before deciding to join Sunderland — who had recently been promoted to the Premier League — at the end of the season for €100,000, shortly after signing a new contract with Waterford to ensure that his hometown side received a fee.

The 6ft 3in tall frontman or left midfielder was a regular in Roy Keane’s Sunderland side.

i would be surprised if its true as move seemed dead. IF he actually does sign i think he will be under more pressure to succeed due to previously turning us down. I just cant see huim signing but hope to be proved wrong...

Im suprised Keane reconsidered him after he came for a medical then went running up to perma tango man saying "giv us a job "
Dont know why he didnt sign for Hull but at that time they were after zamora and obviously didnt want both .

As paul merton says in the direct line ad " thanks but no thanks " for 1.5 mill

Surely we could have got him for alot less. where else is he going to go ( apart from rot in sunderlands reserves) , after hull pulled out ?

So has he signed? If so, great! Exactly the player we need to get out of this league. He may not score 20+ goals but will compliment Priskin, who probably with the right service will score 20+

Really hope this is true, Just a centre half required and we will do well!

you opinionated old tossfarts no nothing about modern football. Stop judgeing a player by his cover and give the man a chace.
I'm pretty happy if this goes through.
Geo, then we're sorted

Happy days, it's all coming together nicely, we have a very strong squad. like many others have said though, would be nice to get a centre back in , even if it's someone on loan for the season!

All the news says is 'Town are reported to have signed Murphy' It doesn't state it's going to happen, just that TWTD is reporting a release by the Daily mail. Some people wonder how fish get caught time and time again? easy they get fooled and they have a short memory. The clue is in the title.

Didn't want to sign for us a few seasons ago, and he is no better now. Waste of money and I am an Irishman and Ipswich fan of 30 years . RK might see something but I honestly don't. Get Pablo fit and play behind stead and Priskin we can't fail. COYB.

Assuming murphy has signed (cos its fun in a sad sort of way but I dont care). What combination of strikers? some poster asked! Well rk said early on and regularly since that he wants options for every game and wants to be protected against an injury crisis once the winter weather sets in. He has got that now except for the defenz imo. Regarding Pabs, I hope he is not refused a chance to enjoy what he has always wanted (imo) to play in a great team. The great team is taking shape and I hope everyone who is here now are going to play a part and be patient and work their socks off when they are not chosen.

i rather we spent 2 mill on Shittu, the watford rock , well bolton rock now.
I think a good CB is more important than a striker now we have priskin but another striker would be great but not murphy for 1.5 mill. We are really paying over the odds for this bloke. Hull didnt want him for some reason and thats tells you alot. where else can he go apart from CCC or reserves. We should offer Bruce 500k take it or leave it , especially as the bloke turned his back on us only a couple of weeks ago. No one wants him ! Or not at that stupid price anyway.

Imagine!... We dont have managers. Posters choose the teams every weak. Posters buy the players. Posters rule the world. Fk long live posters, or viva posters.

Keane still seems to be after a big striker - not only good with his feet, as Stead and Priskin - but good with battering defenders and holding up the ball - like Wickham. He's already said Wickham is too young to play too much - absolutely agree - so we still need a big battering ram.

Tommy Smith - 5'8". Simeon Jackson - 5'9". They're not big target men. As we already have the tiny figure of Peters and the not-much-bigger Martin also attacking down the wings (or drifting in a Man-U type of way...), I bet he doesn't feel like he needs anyone else of gnome-like stature up front. And we do still have Pablo...

And after watching the incredible match last night at Shrewsbury, I am totally convinced that Keane knows what he is doing. What a manager he will make of Ipswich Town. If he thinks Murphy has something to give, then I believe he's right. Let's see if it's confirmed, or yet another message-board rumour. Come on you blues!

personally i can see pabs leaving now, not much point keepong him, hes been a legend but his time is up and we all know hes not premier class so cash in while hes still wanted, For murphy however people must give him a chance, When in keanos old sunderland and when out on loan he ususally played LW for cover, meaning his goals ration wouldnt be great, But with martin covering that wing and civelli back later this year, why would we need another LM, so he will clearly play CF with priskin or stead, and wickham on stand by with stead backup, And i really hope this is a good buy so it shuts all the moaners up,, But i do agree we need a more expereinced, bulky defender who doesnt get out muscled by morison (mcauley and pim)

Agree that we need a bit of brawn up front but I dont think Murphy will give us that. Also he would be a bit pricy @ 1.5M especially as we wouldent buy him the first time off Waterford. If we want a good physical Irish forward we should go for the likes of Shane Long or even Clinton Morrison (both good in the air).
