Who's done it? and Tips on how to do it?

It's been a rough few months in my present job, gone from loving it to hating every day because of management and the general running of the place not to mention the incentives I was offered to stay (having turned down a job offer elsewhere) have yet to be seen and I now have HR pestering me to raise a grievance against someone regarding a few dodgy things they did following my decision to stay with the "charity".

I am considering stay in further education but am also toying with starting afresh...an all round confusing time

I changed career totally , sold my house, gave up my FT job and went to uni as a mature student in 1997. Never regretted it.

Go for it.

Did you know what you wanted to do at that point? That's proving sticking point for me.

I did it when I was 29 and again at 35. First time was stopping my business and going to work in an office. Then, after 6 years, got fed up with it (pay not great, no opportunity for further promotion/development, general hassles of working for other people). Tried to go in one direction, which didn't work, so went back to being self-employed in a very different field. Have been ever since.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I imagine you find this latest venture of yours both challenging and rewarding.

Probably make more money if I was doing that - even with my lack of musical talent.

Yep. See 'teenage kids' thread below!

Left Tescos to do a degree at 32. Knew I was quite good with words so took 4 word-based disciplines (English Language & Communication, Philosophy, Journalism and Creative Writing.) Got into advertising from there.

It was hard work but you only got one life.

I'm 22, got a bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering and soon to have a Masters degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Lack of funds preventing me achieving my goal of being a pilot so considering becoming a firefighter or something like since I can't stand the thought of office working.

Doesn't help you but thought I'd share. It's never too late to change is it?

Argghhh.

Horrendous situation. My dearly departed Grandmother was always in the scenario of preaching, "as soon as you start being upset of going to work, find something else". Do it. Been there myself.

I left the motor industry after 25 years as we had been taken over by a major US car company who were totally inept. They completely to the fun out of work and so I managed to wrangle a redundancy arrangement and then took six months off to decide what to do.

I then got offered a job working freelance in the construction industry which I have now done for the last ten years, Whilst I don't get the security of holiday/sick pay, I can arrange my own working hours and I never work on Friday afternoons.

Overall the money is on par with what the package I had previously and I am not stuck in an office 8 hours a day listening to numpties going on about 'blue sky thinking'

If I ever left the Merch it would be to become a firefighter.

I have to do Firefighter training, as we can't call the fire brigade in the middle of an ocean. I genuinely enjoy it.

A friend of mine did it. 10 years as a drug rep (with a chemistry degree) then chucked it in to go back to Uni to become a doctor. Now a GP and loving his work.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I think my Mum has said similar. It's pretty gutting as the job I have spent last five years in I love but it's all gone t*ts up and made me question everything...all because of one a*sehole in essessnce. It is specialist so jobs few and far between which I think is making me question starting afresh.

I appreciate all the words of wisdom...interesting to see how many folk have made a switch.

I am/will be considering the same at 40. Shifting direction at 30 looks a no brainier so long as you have not got any weighty commitments (big mortgage, 8 kids to support) that are going to worry you.

I suppose when they turned him down, Guthers found it hard to take that, and was feeling blue.

'Feeling blue' in the metaphorical rather the literal sense.

Did it at 27/28 - wasn't as dramatic as went into family business so a bit more of a safety net. But still had to give up on career that was going well and take steps backwards to do so.

Glad I've done it, all went well although it is frustrating at times the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Best to do it before kids etc as that must make it much harder.

If you don't know which direction to go in and it is only one buttwipe who is the problem (and it sounds like HR share your view) why not carry on doing what you love with the added bonus of stalking, hunting down and destroying that one a*sehole? Not overtly, but by stealth and with the occasional outward flourish to provide some entertainment for the troops (if they share your view) - just take care not to land yourself in hot water with HR.

Yes I did. I went to uni on a vocational course. I'm now a physiotherapist . I did this in 1997-2000 and now also have a Masters degree. Do it really is never too late. The only barrier is the one you put up. Usually fear of change. Which I definitely had those fears but I just "went for it" .

Making a change doesn't have to mean.gping to uni. Unfortunately my profession requires a degree but not everything does and if course it's very expensive now.

In terms of jobs which give you a good income what about being a plumber? Trust me they earn a bloody fortune. You might have to go to Suffolk uni for short course to learn the specifics. But plumbers are never out of work!
