Post about the US shooting and mental illness.. (not Trump) 09:45 - Aug 5 with 1127 viewsunstableblue

(mustn't talk about Trump, or I get told off!!)

On a Whatsapp group with some US friends, and one of them made the insightful comment about whether mental illness is to blame for these incidents - "Americans are all in a way crazy, we are 360m who are collectively ill, and we have 260 million guns in the country and growing.... I was in a restaurant in Coyote, and a woman with 2 kids at a table next to me had a hand gun in a holster, totally visible. Now that's F@CKED UP"

ITFCJoe posted the below; these people are mentally disturbed if they think carrying assault rifles to the shops is acceptable or normal, and yet the NRA and millions of Americans will feel this is something to be celebrated.

Crackers people, crackers.

They still think it's the Wild West. They're not a young country anymore, they need to grow the feck up.

Have many of your US friends pointed out the Dayton beach shooter was a big time socialist Bernie supporter who was pro gun control?

They are still a young country.

Errrrrrrr

Where in any of that post or my mates comments, was reference made to the political leanings of these crazies?! there was none whatsoever.

It was more the point that the scale of people who are crackers about guns is much greater than a few individuals.

Poor post from you.

I've spent a fair bit of time in the US although mainly on both coasts and I've never met a gun toting civilian whilst out & about.

I did turn up to a wedding in San Fran where one of the table guests had brought his rifle collection with him to the hotel for the weekend just in case he had time to do some hunting somewhere on the way back or visit a local shooting range.

He was from Denver, Co.

"Rifles, not rifle?" I politely enquired over our starters.

"All 6" he replied.

Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

Same here. The only time I saw guns openly on display was during the deer season up in the NE, and then only when people were out hunting. Never in public places. It's not quite the Wild West people make out. And not everyone's nuts either - plenty of creative, lefty bumfester types in Maine who think the gun lobby are utterly crackers.

I am, especially since a lot of your discourse in the other thread is about Trump and the GOP.

I read a few comments on Twitter yesterday, one bloke saying he needs a fast action assault rifle become sometimes 30-50 wildhogs break into his garden whilst his kids are playing and he needs to get rid off them before they affect his kids.....

I kind of hoped they might when Obama got in. Instead, a black bloke being president just seems to have sparked an ongoing tantrum. The who country resembles a TWTD thread about Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Compared to European nations they are young but there re plenty of younger countries that don't regularly have citizens shooting places up and killing multiple fellow citizens. They are uniquely bonkers as a country.

I think it's the various steps they take that push them close to the edge — and some of them over it.

1. Access to guns. That alone doesn't instantly bring gun violence or mass shootings as Switzerland, Canada etc. manage just fine. But cheap and easy access does feed into the US problem.

2. Tension. Unlike Canada and Switzerland, the US is a tense place with much higher political, economic and social tensions. It's very much a carrot and stick society, unfortunately with many social classes, races and regions only seeing the stick. But even the average white American trying to take what's theirs to keep their head above water. Bizarrely shootings/violence seem to snowball into more of the same not less.

3. Where the state could intervene re: gun control and easing underlying tensions, instead people just talk about freedom. Liberty has been turned into some God and it means that little is done (or can be done) to redress imbalances and establish control.

4. This insane obsession with liberty comes to a head with guns. Coupled with the second amendment and ideas of patriotism and protecting "our freedoms", guns have been utterly fetishized. In part by the NRA that is a hugely effective lobby that gets the gun advocates and libertarian politicians it wants, certainly in the Republican Party but also much of the Democrat party too. But all-in-all when you've been convinced that owning a gun is a patriotic act, it's not exactly a massive leap to using a gun as a "patriotic act".

As we've seen from Fox, a lot of the media doesn't particularly help in dismantling any of the beliefs and delusions. But it's a hamster wheel that the whole country is more or less stuck on anyway. Even the recent grassroots movement re: the Florida school shooting stumbles and flounders when it gets closer to the top and the state and federal level. Because those politicians and lawmakers just don't have the power or the numbers to stop the insanity.

Because it's not about gun control laws but actually changing how the USA works and how it thinks about itself.
