Can you imagine a worse place to be than one of those beaches on D Day?
My Grandfather landed at Sword beach, but fortunately for him he went on the second day, he always maintained that there sent the "kids" in on the first day for fear that those less experienced wouldn't be able to go through with it after they had seen what had happened. I think most of the British troops on D Day were experienced soldiers, on the whole tasked with very specific objectives (knock out pill boxes X and Y etc) . The order of battle shows they were mainly 'First Battalion' units of various regiments, and I think the first (and second) battalion of any regiment tended to be the regulars. The third and fourth battalions were likely to be the Territorials; the battalions raised under conscription would be the fifth or sixth or subsequent battalions. | |

Richard Todd was involved in the glider assault on Pegasus Bridge as I think a Lieutenant and was one of the first there. Major John Howard was the commanding officer who he played in the film. I gather Richard Todd wanted to play himself but was told ‘no’.
