The markets in the US are at all time historical highs, a correction was due at some point.
It's also important to factor in that the Dow Jones isn't market capitalisation weighted like other indices so large moves in smaller and less significant companies can move the index more than the reality.
It's rebounded about 30% of the flash crash so no need for wholesale panic at the moment although everything will open down.

An interesting comparison is with the first day of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, when stocks dropped by a similar amount (6.38 points on the day). However, it was what happened a few days later, when panic took over and the markets were exposed as fragile, which caused the real problems. | |
