That would take someone with tree felling skills and the clean cut suggests a very large and powerful chainsaw was used. Utter tossers [Post edited 28 Sep 2023 13:03]

| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Most farmers would have a tree-felling chainsaw. It's either a sociopath with a need to be noticed, in which case more will follow, or someone who resents or is severely inconvenienced by, the tourists. A collection of sawdust samples from every chainsaw in a five mile radius would give the answer, in the latter case.

My thoughts too...impressive felling for a 16 year old, and a mahoosive saw. Must have been windy too looking at how far the tree is from the stump. Thankfully it should coppice.

The rumour going around is that he was the son of a local landowner who didn't like the tourism the tree attracted, or something along those lines. This would explain why a 16 year old would have access to a chainsaw and decide he just didn't like the tree. Just a rumour though.

Somebody with an axe to grind? Seriously though, what a senseless act. Iโm no expert but is there any way it can be re-attached with a spike and in time grow again?

Or the 16 year old is offered up, because they'd be dealt with by a youth court and its not going to end as a custodial sentence is it. Whilst an adult would be treated differently in the courts
