'Guest of honour' at the Championship play-off final... on 09:53 - May 28 by PhilTWTD | I think that was probably the point the OP was making. |
I know what he was trying to do. Future sponsors should not be gambling, I agree, but fairly clear why he was there. The OP was a cheap attempt for a few meaningless up votes.

I think the 'guest of honour' tag regardless of whether they sponsors the league is tin-eared at best, particularly in light of the Toney situation, even if that was the FA rather than the EFL.

It's the same at every final though where there is a sponsor. The idea of a random royal being guest of honour is just as bad. Perhaps in future it could be someone connected to one of the clubs who has done good work in the community or something.

How old are you? 6. You really think anybody but you cares about collecting uppies? I only say you care due to the number of times you bring up your stolen ones.

I agree, but there is something of an incongruity and mixed message when a gambling sponsor is afforded such a title and role. On the community side of thing, our own Milts was a guest of honour at a League Cup final a few years back due to his work with Prostate Cancer UK, who were a charity partner of the EFL at the time.

'Guest of honour' at the Championship play-off final... on 09:02 - May 28 by LegendofthePhoenix | I think that's correct. But as is the case so often with self regulation, it doesn't go far enough. Government clearly want to keep the gambling revenues rolling in, and are too short sighted to see that if it stops, there will be more for people to spend on other things that will benefit other parts of the economy. |
Your obviously unaware that the government have produced a white paper on gambling.

Because it was such an odd comment. The reason was so obvious. As we've seen though, anything anti gambling goes down well.

For what it’s worth those affordability checks are going to be out of control. They’re not viable. The idea that someone could lose £125 and then have to send bank statements of not just themselves but of those they received payments in from just to get their withdrawal is shameful. It’ll never ever be allowed to happen because it will kill the industry. Likewise the idea that anyone with a form or debt can’t gamble is crazy. I have a student loan like a lot of people, there’s no way that should be a factor in whether I can stick a few quid on a horse. That said, there are some things which I do entirely agree must be implemented. For example, loss limits before playing in a shop on the machines should be mandatory. And then if the player hits the limit, it can’t be overridden and they can’t change machine. That’ll cause issues for the staff but I think is worthwhile. They can choose their own limit when they walk in the shop but it’ll stop the situation of people chasing losses they don’t have and don’t want to spend once they see the ‘tunnel vision’ situation that can occur on the machines.

'Guest of honour' at the Championship play-off final... on 17:16 - May 27 by Zx1988 | Genuine question, as I don't know the answer - was the CEO of Nationwide introduced to the teams in the 2000 playoff final? I've just not seen the CEO of a sponsor take this role before, and never would have thought (given that the role is usually given to a Royal or suchlike) that it would form part of the 'lead sponsor' package. |
Just take the L and move on, it’s a bank holiday weekend

How is it ridiculous? It's only ridiculous to those that insist on reading it 100% literally rather than those that are engaging with the wider point which seems pretty obviously implied in the OP.

Yea no way it won't be heavily watered down. Good job as well. Sick of everyone acting like everyone who bets is an addict. I have made a lot of money from betting (mostly matched betting and arbing). I completely understand that we need to protect the vulnerable and more safeguards are needed. I fully support that, but things like the white paper are just ridiculous. This is where I will be called selfish but all i'm asking is for proportionate measures. I would be very happy to see low limits imposed on casino games but limiting someone betting on sports to tiny amounts is just daft.

I haven't been following this one too closely but feels like a really difficult balance At the very least I'd ban the fixed odds machines outside of betting shops. I don't think it's realistic to suggest that the landlord of a pub for example is really going to be able to monitor loss limits in the same way. I think there's a need for some form of affordability checks - I don't think it's right that someone could gamble their life savings away in the heat of the moment. I don't think student loan would impact you though, different conversation but it's not really a loan at all, more of a tax

Do they have FOBTs in pubs? Fruit machines yes, but FOBTs? I'd be amazed to be honest.

Any pub that has a FOBT in them will have the license revoked. No way there’s FOBTs there. The original suggestion included student loans as a debt. Stupid. As J2 says, people like me and him make good money from betting and the idea of someone stopping me sticking say £150 on a horse is mental to me.

Well I'd like to stop you being able to bet £150 on a horse but you know that already haha. But I get what you mean, the ideal balance is one that protects the vulnerable whilst also protecting your right to play. What do you think of forcing online betting companies to have profit and loss amounts as prominently as an account balance?
