So answer me this... Let's say the UK goes to absolute pot, and you find yourself as a refugee. You happen to speak Hungarian as well as English, and have some contacts in Budapest. You manage to make your way across the Channel, and get to France. Do you, following your own logic, refuse to travel any further because you're already in a 'safe' country? (bearing in mind, of course, that there is actually no legislation whatsoever that demands that refugees seek asylum in the first/nearest 'safe' country.) [Post edited 9 Apr 2023 15:42]

According to Full Fact, this is not true. https://fullfact.org/immigration/refugees-first-safe-country/ Full Fact is a charity which operates on a non-partisan basis. All major British political parties are represented on its board of directors

None of that is true. 1. If they’re seeking asylum they’re not “illegal”. They’re only here illegally if their asylum application is refused and they then stay. 2. Refugees are not required to stop at the nearest point of safety, as per the 1951 Refugee Convention to which we are signatories (and played a major role in writing). 3. Truly illegal immigrants barely have access to any benefits, let alone the “best” ones, because you need legal residency to apply for most of them. This topic has been rumbling on for years, so there’s no excuse for still believing and spreading such lies.

Best benefits? They get 30 odd quid a week. You honestly believe that they risk their lives crossing The Med, mainland Europe and then The Channel, for 30 odd quid a week and a shared room in some dingy B&B? Not to mention spending their family life savings in the process. [Post edited 9 Apr 2023 16:28]

They get no benefits, other than £6 a day to live on (food basically). Surely even some of the most rabid racists don’t want human being starving to death by us? If we give them nothing, they would have to rob to live. Are you sure that £6 a day is the best available in Europe? Where is the evidence? Do you think that is why many leave their families and give up their savings to people smugglers, for £6 a day? Basically, if you are “illegally” in the UK, it is impossible, I repeat, impossible to claim any benefit (housing, money, anything). According to the governments own findings, 13% of companies experienced labour shortages at the end of last year. There were over 1mill job vacancies at the end of 2022. Maybe we could process some of the immigrants more efficiently and get them working, thus contributing (via tax payments) to the UK, rather then the burden that they currently are (by paying for hotels, and other accommodation). Or we could just carry on with narrow minded, prejudiced, bigoted views, being suckered into the lies fed to us by our government and racist organisations.

One prominent Tory would maintain that is one meal and £5.70 spending money.
