Car battery advice 09:11 - Oct 19 with 2061 viewsPrideOfTheEast

So, my significant other managed to leave the car headlights on overnight (steering wheel lock badly placed). They would have been on for circa 9 hours.

I didn’t have time to drive the car anywhere this morning but the engine seemed to start fine and the battery warning light did not come on.

I’m useless with cars — should I do anything beyond taking it for a little drive tonight to recharge the battery?

Don't start it again unless you are taking it for a decent length drive, as that uses up serious energy from the battery and could flatten it.

But yep, generally, a good long drive will see it charge fully

Cheers Joe. I’ll take it out for half an hour tonight. Driving to Heathrow on Saturday morning so could do without an issue!

Hopefully he left the engine running for 5-10 minutes otherwise it may not start this evening, without outside assistance.

Probably 2mins. Will report back tonight!

Most modern cars drop from headlights to sidelights when the engine is off. Which drains the battery a lot less than would otherwise be the case.

I've left lights on all day and all night before (on the previous car, this one has a working alert if you do) without any issues.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

If it doesn’t start tonight, you might need to think about getting a replacement.

Might seem a bit harsh, but if you don’t act soon, she may do it again.

You won't need a new battery - just give it a run for half an hour, preferably in the daytime.

Or - call the AA out, you probably have it on your bank account

Your situation is not beyond the wit of man - you want to have to deal with the sh1t I have to do every day at the moment.

I had to say no to someone a few months ago and I still feel bad about it to this day. Was at Cambridge services, little one was in the back crying, had only ran in for a nappy change (not mine, the little one), I was stressed and very late for where I needed to be. Poor lad approached me and asked if he could jump his car off mine, had to politely decline and get on my way. Felt like a right bar steward.

I was in a Tesco car park when that happened to me.

I got the hood up, had all the gear wired up and ready to go so's not to inconvenience anyone too much. I felt like Oliver Twist "Please sir, can you spare a few moments?"

This bloke hurried by, deliberately speeding up his step when he spotted me. So I cursed him. He stopped and started having a go back so I said "Oh, right, so you've got time for a fecking row then, but not time to help me start my car".

He then actually looked a bit awkward but still cleared off, the ****.

Some elderly couple ended up lending me theirs, but I suppose they had nothing better to do than wait about for the inevitable end anyway.

You bastard. You took some elderly couple's car, leaving them with one that wouldn't start?

That's low.

I bought some charging leads a few years back and they are well worth having.
If you ever have a flat battery on your drive you can just plug it in to the mains for an hour and you’re good to go.
Saves any faffing about with jump starting etc.

I would buy battery charger, even a cheapo off ebay works. Won't help for the time being but with window coming on batteries take a fair hit.

You can fully charge it up over night at the w/es, or when you are not going to be using the car. Lent it out a number of times

However as Lucan says it might be worth checking on the condition of the battery. Easier to replace when you don't have to than stuck on the side of the road at 9pm.
